UCBerkeley or USC for communications?

From what I've heard, SC has a very good program for Comm.. Berkeley only has this Mass Communications which i have very little idea what it's about... Still, it is more prestigeous AND cheaper!

Mainly i am considering those 2.. but i am also admitted into comm for BU and UCSD and UCSB.

Please help me choose!!

I say make your decision between USC and BU. USC because i know sc has a strong program and with the trojan network you really can't go wrong.

The study of mass communication and what USC offers, or at least what I think they offer, are different things. What do they offer, exactly?

Besides this particular subject, how do you feel about the campuses, their food, atmosphere, surrounding areas, students, ect? These things should also be a big part of your decision.

With the trojan network you really can't go wrong...in LA, if you plan to live there for the rest of your life.

Otherwise, Cal all the way.

i personally want to go to usc more than berkeley
i went to both campuses and they are both ok..
but the only thing is its too expensive.:(

I'm pretty sure a degree from Annenberg would open many more doors than a Berkeley Mass Communications degree. However, considering the price difference, I would seriously consider UC Berkeley. If you were qualified to be admitted to both schools, you are probably going to be successful and have the same opportunities no matter which school you choose.

thanks!
i was just looking at the berkeley's threads and they are giving me a sense that people at cal study all the time and i dont see much social activities going on.. bummer!!!
i guess i am more of a party person><

I would choose UCB over USC for its stronger academics and lower tuition.

usc comm is probably more desirable in your case, but if money is really a big factor, you'll be fine by going to cal instead.

If money's no object...go with Cal. If money is important, it really is a no brainer.

Not true about Cal not being a party school. Half of Cal's students don't party, which leaves 15,000 partiers in a relatively small area. Mass Com majors are partiers.

As well, there is a HUGE difference between the areas around campus, Berkeley's much more liveable and enjoyable. Even football is more enjoyable at Cal! Tightwad Hill, greek row, Strawberry Canyon...

thanks for the advice.. i just have one doubttt.. cuz since ucb has challenging courses. so to get good grades, i would have to study hard and that will take up all my time, and there will be little time for social. so yeah

Sure, but for decent grades, even at USC, it's probably no walk in the park. Plenty of students have social lives here. you just have to be somewhat serious, not deadly serious. You'll see if you attend, or, better yet, come visit and talk to some mass comm majors.

If your parent's are willing to pay for SC, go, so much more fun and you will be at the center of media for Cali for internships, etc. If it's about lots of loans, well Cal can be made fun.

I agree that USC does have a pretty good social life. Don't just read studentsreview.com because more kids on there are likely to post negative than positive things.

Could the same thing not be said for most schools?

For social life? I, of course, can't speak for Berkeley but I have an asian friend at USC who parties there a lot and frequently sends me free copies of "The Economist" :)

Perhaps you should be addressing the above posters who say: "i was just looking at the berkeley's threads and they are giving me a sense that people at cal study all the time and i dont see much social activities going on.. bummer!!!
i guess i am more of a party person><"

actually, it makes sense that i will have to study hard to get good grades anywhere. so it's not an issue anymore then. and i would say that sure at every college there's social life. it's just the different atmospheres.

One of my closest friends at 'SC actually transferred here from Cal because of the dearth of communications offerings up there. What's funny is that he actually liked the Cal scene more than USC... but is ultimately far more happy with the multitude of Comm offerings at USC Annenberg compared to Cal.

To the poster who plugged Berk academics over 'SC (cough cough, flopsy), the schools are in far different leagues when it comes to Comm. academics.
