UCBerkeley vs. UCLA Discussion

Anyone having a similar struggle, as to which one to choose to attend. Tips. Pros and Cons between both of them. Anyone would like to help? Advices?

Hi, guys. So who knows the bad things of UCLA and UCB. I hear lots of good things, yet I would like to know their negatives!!! Please Help I would really appreciate.

UCLA is on the quarter system while Berkeley is on the semester system. Quarter systems you have to register for classes and buy books one more time per academic year. A benefit is you get done sooner with a bad class. Semesters allow for more in depth topics with a particular professor.

UCLA is the more popular, better looking, younger, jockish brother of Berkeley. They say better social life, but Westside traffic is a nightmare. UCLA football is played 25 miles away from campus.

Berkeley is the more academically distinguished older brother. Berkeley’s academic programs are usually rated higher than UCLA’s. IMO, Berkeley is a student-oriented city when compared to Westwood. The City of Berkeley can be grittier but more transportation options make it much easier to get around without a car. Cal football is right on campus, but the team’s performance will test your patience.

Thanks @UCBChemEGrad‌.

OK, so I had a son go to each so here is my take. First off, I think you can’t go wrong either way and I agree with everything UCBChemEGrad said. Also, if you ask each of my sons they are glad they picked the campus they did and couldn’t imagine themselves at the other one.

They both have beautiful campuses, and great school spirit. Both have great sports programs. If you are from the Bay Area you might want to try a different area of the state and vice versa if you are from Southern California.

UCLA: Pros: All the dorms are in the same area. Food in dining halls consistently rated very high. Cons: Quarter system (can also be considered a pro) which means finals three times a year, starting in late September and getting out in mid-June. Sometimes it is harder to get internships or summer jobs because they start earlier or are scooped up by students on the semester system who get out in May. Football is 25 miles away. Campus meal plan doesn’t work at on-campus restaurants (although I hear they are working on that). The traffic around Westwood can be horrible, but honestly this didn’t bother my son a bit because he never really left campus.

Cal: Pro: Football stadium on campus. Since the stadium is on campus, the parties before the game “Gamedays” are very fun. The campus itself is bigger. View of the San Francisco Bay. Better public transportation options. Getting to and from the airport, SF, etc… is remarkably easy. Academically Berkeley seems to have a lot more 1-2 unit classes which helps round out your schedule. At Berkeley you can really be “you”, whoever that is.

Cons: Dining hall food isn’t great but you can use your mealpoints at on-campus restaurants. Berkeley is an urban campus and although the campus itself is beautiful, the “grittiness” of Berkeley can take some getting used to.
