Hi

My son was accepted to both UCD and UCLA. He’s not sure what he wants to major in, probably something in the humanities. He is a good writer. Both my husband and I went to Davis.

Anyway, I think my son is veering toward Davis. It is just a nice college atmosphere, and he received substantially more financial aid at Davis than at UCLA.

I know UCLA is more well known…

Any thoughts, opinions, etc?

Thanks, guys!

UCLA would open many more doors than UCD would. I live in Davis, and it sure doesn't seem like more fun than living in Westwood.

I live in Sacramento, and I didn't apply to UCLA, and I wouldn't go to school in SoCal. I think it depends where he is coming from, personally I like Davis better as a school... I have some friends who attend there and are science majors, so I don't know a lot about humanities there. I don't think UCLA really "opens more doors" than UCD, your son will do the opening so long as he is driven. It depends on his personality and what location appeals to him.

Well, fair or not, employers, grad schools, and the rest of the world are going to look at your UC Davis diploma and assume that you didn't get into Berkeley and UCLA. Now don't get me wrong, UC Davis is a pretty good school. All 3 of my sisters go there. But let's say for example, if you were to apply to top grad schools, even a 4.0 may not be enough when they have plenty of 4.0s from Berkeley and UCLA to consider. Now obviously there are other factors involved, but you get the idea. If school reputation didn't matter, why wouldn't everyone just slack off in high school, go to community college to save money, and transfer to a UC later?

I highly doubt that. Let's agree to disagree.

I appreciate both of your imput.

Actually my husband transferred from UCB to Davis. In his field, it doesn't matter where you graduate from. But, I hear over and over again how a degree from UCB and UCLA is worth so much more than some of the other UCs.....

Thanks, guys.

I have to agree with Im_blue. We live between UCI and UCSD. My son's 1st choices are UCB, UCLA and USC and the order of choice has changed frequently over the last year. Where we live, most people assume you go to UCI if you did not get into UCLA or UCSD... It wows people when they hear your kid was accepted to USC or UCLA. I don't think you get the same response for UCI or UCD. I am afraid employers or grad schools would look at it the same way.

I think its agreed that employers generally look at your work experience much more than the school that you went to. Yes, your first job will generally look a lot on what school you went to / GPA, but after that, its up to you to do something with that job.

If you had someone who went to UCD, got a job, and got tons of accolades and accomplishments, I think it would outshine someone who went to UCLA got a job, and hasn't done a thing ever since.

Its all up to the person.

hi im wondering the same..
i got into ucla but got regents from davis.. i like davis and i have yet to visit la..

so save me

Congratulations on getting Regents at Davis!! What is your major? Are finances a concern? You really do need to visit UCLA and the LA area to make a good comparison.

Prophasi....I appreciate your post (on another thread) where you said that UCDavis was up and coming and you listed all these links. That was excellent. Thanks so much for taking the time to do that.

We were at Davis just last weekend. It is a lovely campus and brought back fond memories.

It certainly depends upon your major as well. Daughter's roommate declined UCB for Davis because she is studying animal science. I don't think which UC you graduated from makes a huge difference for some majors.

i dont know what my major is.. =/ originally i was set on davis because i intended to major in nutritional science.. but then i sat in on a class and i decided it probably wasn't what i wanted to be studying for the next four years of my life. so right now, i'm majorless. lol.. i'm pretty sure i don't want to do science.

finances aren't a concern but i don't know if it's really worth the extra money to go to LA over Davis..

Then go to Davis. Don't let a few academic snobs deter you from persuing a degree in an environment where you will thrive. I know dozens of UCD grads who are incredibly successful people in their chosen fields, ranging from law to medicine. UCD is an excellent institution with a great reputation.
