UCD Class of 2013

yeah…if you will be gone for a couple of months, get a place where you can stop payments or pay month-to-month. save $
and yes there’s always next school year!

So, for those of us who want to take summer classes but did file a fafsa for this current school year, I found this:

“Can I still apply for aid for the 2010-2011 academic year we are in now? Yes, the deadline to apply for federal aid for the 2010-2011 academic year is June 30, 2011; however, you can no longer apply for Cal Grants for 2010-2011.”

Source: [Frequently Asked Questions for Undergraduates](http://financialaid.ucdavis.edu/undergraduate/students/FAQ2.html)
So we are in luck!

Do you guys know what areas of Sacramento are closest to Davis?
The SO dislikes Dixon and Woodland. I don’t like Dixon either (we lived there for awhile, and it was too conservative for us) and Woodland, well, lets say…it really does not live up to its name, lol. We’d both love to live in Davis, but so far it is really difficult finding decent housing. Even with my financial aid and the SO’s job, we cannot really afford to live there. Le sigh…

How are you planning to get around? Driving in or taking public transportation?

If driving, West Sacramento is closest and most direct. After that I’d probably look at parts of the city close to I-80, which would give you a direct route into Davis.

If you’re thinking about buses, West Sacramento is still closest but I’m not sure whether it’s the most convenient or not. The Yolobus (free with student ID) has a route that runs between there and Davis, but there’s also an express route (it says “peak hours only”) between downtown Sacramento (in the Capitol Park area) and Davis which might be just as fast. Then there’s the medical center shuttle (not free; pass is $45/mo.) which runs between the main campus and the med center campus. The med center campus is south-east of downtown, between North Oak Park and Elmhurst.

I have NO idea how reliable the Yolobus is relative to the med center shuttle or vice versa, unfortunately. My wife and I are looking at a lot of different areas around the city, and I’ll probably be walking, biking or riding one to three miles just to get to the med center or downtown area. Even if my wife doesn’t need the car for her work commute, I’d rather not drive unless I can find a really good carpool group.

You could also try asking people on the [Sacramento city-data forum](Sacramento Forum - Relocation, Moving, General and Local City Discussions - City-Data Forum) about places to live, since they know the area.

I have a question for anyone who can help:

I submitted a FAFSA on late January based on the parents income from last year (my dad had not yet done his taxes since he still didn’t have his W-2) and what I earned in 2010. I got an EFC of somewhere around 4500. However, on April 15, I submitted a revised FAFSA that had my dad’s taxes for 2010. My EFC was now 0000. In “MyAwards” it says I have a contribution of $7,906.00?..what does this mean?I have pay this from my own pocket?I thought that Davis will have gotten the new revised FAFSA and obtain full payment from them since I have a EFC of 0000.Can anyone help me out?

are any of you guys considering the overnight option for orientation? I’m from so cal and I don’t know if I could fly into Sac and then get to Davis by the check-in time.

@ray. I have that question too since my contribution that Davis wants from me is significantly higher than the efc on my fafsa. I’ll try calling later. By I think it has somethin to do with it being an ESTIMATED family contribution.

@redhead. I’m too scared to stay overnight. Lol

@red I would like to stay overnight, but I’m most likely just doing the day option ($85). And the drive for me is only about 2 hours.

Plus I don’t know if my parents want to go yet, so I’ll have to see about that.

Okay guys, I just got off the phone with the financial aid office. For ray, the EFC thing. Once you submit your verification forms and etc. the EFC on your FAFSA should equal the amount of contribution that Davis asks for. So just send in all your information and you’ll be set.

And about living off campus instead of on campus. Your SCHOLARSHIP funds (not the loans) will be decreasing a little over $4,000 says the financial aid guy. It’ll also take 2-3 business days to process this into the system when you change your preferences online.

^ the UG scholarship funds? But isn’t that basically the blue & gold plan? How could they decrease it, then? Or am i missing somethin’…

bakemaster explains the system, or at least the way he thinks it is (sounds right to me) on the previous page on post #107

it really sucks that they’re decreasing the scholarship fund because i’d probably have to accept that loan to pay off everything else. but a 5,500 loan a year isn’t that bad really.

that doesn’t make sense to me because by definition the blue and gold only covers your tuition, it doesn’t offer help with housing.

so if your housing is less expensive, maybe your loans decrease, but your tuition for your class fees shouldn’t, right?

Yay, just SIR’d. C:

Are you going to decision day on May 13th?
Nope, I have class that day. :C

Are you going to attend the orientation? If yes, are you excited!?
Yes & yes.

Living on campus or not? If so, where at?
TBH, I’m not sure where to live. Everyone seems to be talking about the Ramble Apts and that seems really appealing, but I dunno how the whole finding roommates thing works out.

Are you planning on changing major/double majoring?
Most likely! I got in under Sociology, but I’m super interested in Food Science. c:

Oh and, I had a quick question for you guys… I know this probably sounds really stupid, but under the list of “Required Tasks,” it asks for high school transcripts. Does this mean I just walk up to my old HS and ask for one to mailed there or what? Thanks in advance for the help, you guys.

@happysensations. For your high school transcript, your city should have a transcript office somewhere. Just search up “[District] transcript office” and it should show up. You walk up to them and ask for a transcript to be sent to UC Davis & they should know what you’re talking about. You should probably have to fill out a form to release the information & may have to pay a fee. (It’s $5 for the San Francisco Unified School District, don’t know about yours, but it should be similar).

You can read up on the Blue & Gold thingy here: http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/paying-for-uc/financial-aid/grants/blue-gold/index.html</a></p>

It states that “Under the plan, your systemwide fees will be fully covered by scholarship or grant money if you are in your first four years at UC (two if you’re a transfer student).” and “The plan combines all sources of scholarship and grant awards you receive (federal, state, UC and private) to count toward covering your fees. If, for example, you receive Pell and Cal Grants and private scholarships that don’t fully cover your fees, UC grant money will make up the difference.”.

However, like bakemaster stated, (we think) Davis sets up everyone (possibly) with a $5,500 loan to start. Then they’ll tack on the Pell grant, and whatever is leftover will be the UG Scholarship, which is the Blue & Gold plan I believe.

Thus, if your housing goes down, your estimated cost of living will decrease as well. With that goes your UG Scholarship

Hi everyone! I’m Wayne. I’m excited to finally get out of community college and start the real university experience. We should be friends!

@seeto: do you know which verification forms I have to submit to verify my EFC?(does have to be online or fax it to them and what stuff are they asking).I can’t seem to find such information.

Just for people to know, I am going to the orientation on Friday June 24. I am going to there through Amtrak.

Ray, login to myawards via <a href=“CAS – Central Authentication Service”>CAS – Central Authentication Service; . Input your Student ID number, DOB, etc. Once you have accepted the financial aid offers, you can see your awards in detail and check your requirements. You should see “Yes (Click Here)” under the “Action Required?” section. Click on that to see what requirements you have to send in. They should be something along the lines of your parents tax forms (if you’re a dependent i think), your tax forms (if any), and a verification worksheet. You may choose to either fax them in or mail it in (I choose to mail mine in since I don’t trust fax machines for some reason).

You may also have additional requirements for your subsidized loan if you choose to accept it. These requirements are just a little quiz that’s easy to pass and a promissory note that I wouldn’t advise you fill out unless you plan on accepting the loan.

@bakemaster – I’m thinking about driving. I’m looking at apartments in the Pocket/Greenhaven and Natomas areas since I heard they were nice. Also, when you say West Sacramento, do you mean the city of West Sacramento or the western part of Sacramento? If you mean the city – I totally forgot about West Sac when I was looking at apartments! Thanks for reminding me. I like West Sac better than Woodland and Dixon and I think the SO does too.

thought this would be a good link to share with you all. [AS - Student Services Transfer](<a href=“Student Life”>Student Life)

apparently they put on many events for transfers…meet & greet, bbqs, free coffee (well, according to their [Twitter](http://twitter.com/#!/TRVucdavis/status/5375368965))

=)

@redheadx: The overnight option is kind of pricey. Cheaper to get a hotel, for people who have transportation and are comfortable managing their own affairs. As for me, my wife is coming but she’s not going to do the family orientation because it looks set up entirely for parents of dependent students. So we’re going to get a hotel for three nights, one day of orientation for me, and we’ll spend the rest of the time checking out neighborhoods and getting familiar with the area.

@mytime09 & rshie002: Remember, the “Blue & Gold Plan” is not a specific scholarship or grant, it’s a general guarantee about what kind of aid package you will get. As seet0o pointed out, if you’re getting federal grants, those will help to satisfy the B&G guarantee before UC gives you any of their own scholarship money. The Stafford loans, which are federal aid, have nothing to do with CA budget; so in order for UC to be able to give everyone as much aid as possible, they have to take advantage of everything that students can get from federal aid. Every dollar they give you in UC scholarship is a dollar they can’t give someone else. So when your housing costs go down, your financial need (as defined by UCD) also goes down, and your “full-need” scholarship goes down to match the drop in financial need.

@amsstory: I meant the city of West Sacramento. I don’t know much about it but the location seems convenient, both to Davis and to downtown Sac. Wife and I haven’t seen any houses listed in our price range in Pocket/Greenhaven; we have seen some on the other side of the airport from there, but we’re not sure about those neighborhoods. Looks like a ton of foreclosures and not a lot of character in the houses, plus not as convenient to med center/downtown. We’ve looked at Natomas too but have concerns about the flood risk and building moratorium. Less of an issue for renters, I guess.
