@YNWA007 OOS: Higher acceptance rate because of lower yield. Tuition is significantly higher for OOS state students which makes the yield lower. UCD cannot enroll more than 18% OOS students
Academic stats of OOS students are as high, if not higher, than in state students. A 1550 is quite good. Calculate your son’s UC GPA in order to compare to the stats that others are posting on this thread. https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
Daughter accepted! Undeclared Social Sciences
4.7 weighted GPA
1250 SAT
Top 5% of HS class
4’s and 5’s on AP English and History exams
PIQ’s definitely helped her out!
Wait-listed at SLO (Public Health)/accepted at SDSU (Public Health)
In-state student
@KennyH my friend’s kids got in Bio a few years back … not as competitive as CS or engineering but still competitive: they have 2 Bs and their ACT is 34.
@Gumbymom - which engineering majors are considered competitive/heavily impacted? (I know, all are competitive. I am talking about “relative to each other”).
My DS20 just got accepted by EE at UCD. Now I have to turn my attention to DD21. DS21 has higher stats than her brother, with very good, but not stellar extracurriculars (no awards or research internships). Originally she plans to apply to CS, but now seeing so many with almost perfect stats get rejected/waitlisted, she’s thinking about applying for computer engineering or other engineering majors instead. But I heard getting into CE is as competitive as CS. Perhaps EE or ME? Or are they all the same? Thanks!
@2015vintagemars I am an EE from UCD a long time ago… It used to be very competitive in my time. But now CS rules. My DS just got into CS so I understand the situation. My friend’s son couldn’t get into UCD for CSE last year with 2 Bs and 1540 SAT. So it is extremely competitive.
@2015vintagemars: I agree that CS/CSE are probably the most competitive followed by Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering but in general all Engineering majors are competitive since they are all direct admit.
@nella2024 - thanks so much for your insight. Seems like for most CS applicants it’s either admit, or straight reject without offering an alternate major. I don’t want to see DD21 disappointed next year so will have some serious discussion this summer.
@2015vintagemars Not true. I know a person who was offered EE at Illinois. His first choice major is CS. If CS, I feel that the GPA is so important in the admission process. I am seeing a lot of 4.0 UW GPA stats for UCs. However, out of state schools are easier to get admitted than UCs. I know a few who didn’t have “great” academic profiles … they still can get in Purdue, Ohio State, Wisconsin, etc … all top CS schools. So flexibility is key.
GPA: 4.0 UW, 4.66 W (in-state)
ACT: 33
Major: Plant Biology
ECs: Varsity sports, year-long Leadership Academy, did the YSP at UC Davis last summer (quality program!)
I’m not sure if this was asked already but is there any way to gauge what my chances are if I’m on the waitlist? I read the FAQ and everything, but I was wondering if there has been trends in past years or anything. Davis is my top school and I was waitlisted to my next top school as well.
@bethiew: your chances are dependent upon how many admitted students enroll by May 1. Waitlist admits vary from year to year. Last year they accepted 1375 off the waitlist. 2018 was 1143 and 2017 was 321.
