how does class rank matter for UC's besides top 4% (ELC)... they don't know what your class rank is when you apply

Yea, I noticed that too. They have no way of knowing your class rank until you actually send in your transcript in July.

Nonetheless, 96% of admits were in top 10% last year.

Similar to the ELC situation. Kids keep saying ELC increases your chances. Only at the schools that take all ELC applicants that year. Simply, it's not about ELC, it's that these school are choosing the highest achievers. In fact both UCB and LA turn down more than half of ELC applicants.

however for UCB and LA, even though they don't take ALL ELC's, there's still a significantly higher admit rate for ELC's then for non ELC's

Does this mean 10% in each of their respective high schools or top 10% overall for all the high schools.

lazieeryceboi: i'm just wondering, why do you want to go to Davis? what is appealing about the school? (i don't know too much about it)

Top 10% at respective high schools.

There is a mystery why some students have such high GPAs while getting under 600's in SAT tests, that I have not yet figured out. I expect a few applicants with high test scores are accepted and elect to attend elsewhere, it wouldn't take too many 4.2 gpas to drive the average up.

Is that it? Do all the 4.2s go elsewhere, leaving 3.7 as the operative GPA?

:( i am not in the top 10% at my school (top 20% and my school is small, only around 125 in senior class) oh well :( :( :(

zagat, I think that the number of students who are accepted but choose to go elsewhere would include a disproportionate number of high scorers who got into a college they preferred above Davis. It is speculation, but I think the reasoning is sound.

you honestly cant figure out how you could have a high gpa but crappy tests?

its simple... you can play a teacher much easier than you can play a test.

grades are a combination of work ethic, homework, tests, class particpation, sucking up to the teacher.. where as a test is just a test

My high school average sat is 960.

THe average sat of a top 10% student is about 1200.
One person out of our 650 person class made it above 1400. Only 10-15 kids got above 1300. The high school never promoted studying, reviewing, or even really mentioned the test except that you should take it. theregicider is correct in that a test is just a test,, study and prepare for it and you should do well.

Let's see, why UCD?
Besides from the beautiful campus, tranquil environment, awesome faculty and student body, there's also the fact that Lake Tahoe is to one side and San Francisco is on the other. I don't really mind people calling it cow country, because I love agrarian societies! The people are always more amicable and helpful. But personally, because UCD is the furthest UC from Orange County! No offense to OCers, but I can't wait to get out of here. ahaha I'll miss my framily and friends and all, but still, it's UCD! I'll miss the surfs and sands, but at least I got my cows! MOO!

UCD has a cool raptor center that you can visit. I love how UC Davis is more like a small city and not like many other UC where most places are walkable. Bike Capital of the World is great. I like the spaced out campus feeling. Also all of the buildings are nice and the campus is clean and well ran. UCSD was dirty with papers everywhere and the buildings needed to be washed. UCSB is the most run down looking UC that I have seen, many of buildings need to be updated and you can smell that water pond area that is in every picture of UCSB... it smells like crap. At least the cows arent close to the main camous at Davis.

Why UC Davis?

What's important to remember with all this talk about GPAs and SATs, is that college is more important than academics. College is all about the EXPERIENCE and this is where UCD excels. If you want to go to college for the sole purpose of grades and a degree, go to UCI or UCSD and study to your hearts content. But if you want to enjoy college life, toss the Frisbee on the lawn, cheer on the newly DI Aggie sports teams, or party it up on Russell Avenue (Frat row, where MTV filmed the show "Sorority Life"), WHILE still having an academic atmosphere of one the top schools in the nation...GO TO UCD. Go visit UCI on any weekend, the school is a commuter school, it is deserted, everyone goes home. If you're a hardcore partier go to UCSB, where you can party till you drop. But the most well rounded UC in the system with the greatest student life is Davis.
WHY STUDENT LIFE AT DAVIS IS THE BEST
- DI sports with potential to grow. THIS IS THE MOST EXCITING TIME TO BE AT DAVIS as we're just going DI in sports. Everyone at UCD loves UCD, there is Aggie Pride everywhere, you just haven't heard of it because Davis hasn't had the chance to be big time. Next year we play Stanford in football and they are coming to Davis to play us in basketball. We're building a new football stadium, by the time an enrolling freshman is a senior, Davis athletics should be all over ESPN and the student crowds will easily rival Cal and LA.
- People at Davis are really friendly and really cool. The guys always open the doors for girls. If get in a bike accident, everyone stops and asks if your all right. Its a friendliness not seen at other campuses, its Aggie Pride.
- Intramural Sports in Davis are huge and open for all skill levels. 16,000 students do IMs every year; from Dodgeball to Flag Football...the IMs are incredibly fun.
- Come on, what's more college esque than thousands of people biking to class everyday
- I could go on but this post is long enough...feel free to ask questions or leave remarks

In the end, Davis is the last true college town left in California, it has that feel to it, and it has the vibe to it. It's an amazing school with amazing people...GO AGS!

I attend Davis Senior High School, in Davis California. I've lived here 15 years now, its a cool town. Most people are pretty nice, there are a few hippies, not much crime; we just had our first murder in like 16 years or something. Housing costs are pretty crazy, check out http://daviswiki.org they have lots of info on things to do in Davis. I will probably be going to UCD next year, its a great town. Hope to see you here next year!

Good point- Goags!
No numbers can substantiate how great of a college town UC Davis is. People are tossin' frisbies left and right, enjoyin' the California sun, students tannin' on the quad's lawn. Everything is so....COLLEGE! Come check it out on Picnic Day and though Davis isn't for everyone- give it a chance! You might just love it here.

Good luck everyone! UCs Rock!

Keep this post alive aggie hopefuls...
Feel free to ask questions about UC Davis. It is gorgeous now!
K- gotta go back in the sun and play some football.

about the top 10 percent thing.. if you look up any of the stats for uc's, they have a ridiculous percentage of kids in the top 10 percent of their hs.. it seems unrealistic to me. and the gpa! 3.9?!? i realize thats a UC gpa, but i still have a hard time believing thats the average acceptee gpa..

maybe im just in denial, cuz if it is the average gpa i am sooo screwed with my 3.4ish..but i guess i have a 1390/750/740/720.. bleh. its such a crapshoot when your gpa is sooo far below but your sat is higher than the average. goodluck to everyone, though =) few more days til march 15!
