im really torn between two great schools and i dont know which one to go to. i have just been accepted to UC Davis (which is closer to home) and UC San Diego. initially i planned to go to UCD but i heard that UCSD has a better program for my major, Biochem. but still ive heard stories from both sides and ive heard great things from each. but the more i hear, the more torn i become. my parents want me to go to davis because its closer to home which i dont mind at all. but i would also like to live a life of my own. IDK! please give me advice people. thanks.

I think UCSD is supposed to be a better school than Davis all around, but I could be wrong. Also, I've toured UCSD, and it's in La Jolla, a beautiful rich area right by the beach and shopping malls. However I think you'll get more of a traditional college experience at UCD... from what I've seen and heard about UCSD, people are less social and more into studying. But of course you can find people like you anywhere you go.

Both UCD and UCSD are excellent for biochem. So I think your decision really comes down to where you want to live for four years.

Speaking as a UCD grad who has lived in near UCSD for many years:

Advantages of UCD: The classic College Town experience - small town located half way between the bright lights of the Bay Area and the ski slopes of Tahoe.

Disadvantage of UCD: Hotter in the summer and colder & wetter in the winter.

Advantage of UCSD: Slightly higher ranking. Better weather. Located in a bigger city - if big is an advantage for you.

Disadvantage of UCSD: More of a commuter school than UCD - less school spirit. E.g. no football team.

keep in mind that davis is really growing as a school. it's football team has moved to division 1 (that's a plus side to davis- fun football games!) so more money is coming in. if you are looking at it in terms of rankings, davis will definately go up in the next few years- maybe to the level of ucsd. but currently, ucsd is probably slightly better in biochem.

i've heard the atmosphere of both campuses are equal. they are both are pretty chill-not too much partying but not too much studying. and if you really really want to get away from your parents, you should go to ucsd. i myself live near uc davis but i want to stay closer to home so i will be attending davis.

all in all, ucsd is currently better in academics but davis is rising. and the atmosphere of both is about the same. it's tough but i hope this info helped you.

UCSD is growing just as fast if not faster than Davis, and it is definitely considered a far better school academically. SD is particularly strong in the biological sciences, and it's not TOO far from Davis, so I would opt for SD.

if i were in your situation, i would choose UCSD..cuz it has an excellent bio/chem/med major. but it depends where you would rather live...small town or big city.

i'm also trying to decide between UCSD and UCD, except my major is economics. UCD gave me large scholarship, which makes me really wanna go to save money, but living-wise, id REALLY REALLY prefer san diego cuz i absolutely love the campus. also, i dunno which school has the better econ major..any suggestions?

Hi..I'm a mom that has been researching these two schools for my son. He also debated long and hard because we are an hour from Davis and 7 hours from San Diego. He liked SD much better when we visited but wanted to be closer to home. He did finally decide on SD...Muir College..Biology major. It has been interesting to read all the posts. My friend graduated from SD two years ago and she (and other research) has said SD is the best for biology, so I guess it is the best place to go, although I know Davis is good too. It sounds like SD might not be too exciting for a social life...I am hoping some SD students disagree...at least my friend said she had fun!
