Hello all,
So i got into UCD with regents and their honors program, for biomedical engineering. At UCSD i had applied for biomedical but got my alternate, chemical eng. Waitlisted at UCLA…grr.
But what do you guys think is the better choice? I would like to go to med school if possible, but also want a very stable major for jobs in case i dont (hence i chose engineering over biology). I’m a nor cal kid, and I love love San Diego (the city). I liked both campuses when I visited.
Wondering in terms of academics obviously, competition, prestige (does the regents make davis equal to ucsd?), social life, people there, etc!

I am in the same EXACT situation. Everything (biomedical engineering at UCD w/ regents, alt. major of chemical engineering at UCSD (applied bioengineering), waitlisted UCLA) you said applies to me except I’m from So Cal and am not too fond of San Diego (the city). I can’t help you much though as I’m lost myself. I’m interested in hearing what others have to say.

D has Regents at UC Davis and regular admission at UCSD. She isn’t going to consider UCSD in the mix at all.

The biggest advantage to the Regents Scholarship is the fact that you have first dibs on course selection. In the UC system that is a huge advantage as you may not get the classes you want if you are not in the Regents program.

I’m in almost the exact same situation as both of you guys (UCB reject, LA waitlist, UCSD admit, UC Davis regents in BME). The only difference is that I DID get into bioengineering at UCSD (but didn’t get into Muir, got Marshall instead, which is not too bad, but not exactly what I preferred), yet I’m still confused which is the better choice. I’ve seen UCSD plenty of times and liked it and Davis I went for the first time last weekend and also liked it. I’m so confused which school to select!

If I was in your guys situation, I would choose Davis without even thinking too much about it. Honors + Regents is a huge plus and the perceived “prestige” difference, which doesn’t account for all that much in the first place between the two, should go away in this kind of situation. Davis Regents >> UCSD regular IMHO.

I’ve heard that sd is a lot more competitive than Davis, but I’ve just heard that, not experienced it myself. And I don’t think there’s that huge of a difference in prestige between the two, if you look on wikipedia, out of 3 rankings us news was the only one to rank sd higher than Davis (otw wiki so not completely trustable and I don’t know what they were looking at either) so with regents Davis definitely seems like they would be comparable. Plus the regents will make sure you get your classes easier, and with BME thats going to be more difficult than usual I would think, so you’ll have less of a struggle graduating within 4 years. But if you really won’t be happy at davis, you should go to sd
