UCD (regents) vs. UCB

If you are a top student, and you know what you want to do, then Berkeley chem is perfect for you. There is no doubt that the faculty and the caliber of the students in Berkeley chem will be far superior to that of UCD. The career opportunities, name recognition, prestige of program, prestige of school, will definitely affect the first few years of your career if you choose to stay in a technical field.

But, what may detract some people to chose UCD might be the fact that Berkeley has grade deflation. It will be much easier getting through UC Davis with a high GPA than at Berkeley. But if you are not interested in grad school, why does that even matter? If you are up for the challenge, Berkeley is the way to go. If you want an easier time in the next four years, and you want to be a big fish in a small pool, then Davis is better for you.

I’m in a similar dilemma. I go to ucsd, but I’m transferring because ucsd refuses to give me any financial aid (compared to Berkeley’s $6,600 offer and Davis’ ~$7,500). I have no idea which one I’ll choose. The prestige of Berkeley is really tempting… but then again, I kinda want to go to Berkeley as a grad student, so maybe I can just wait. I don’t know…

civilengineer91: In graduate school, sure, but in undergrad, literally the only difference is that it’s more competitive. Sure, the name recognition helps with graduate school applications, but would you say it overcomes the effect of a deflated GPA? I tend to think they emphasize GPA more than undergraduate college name. Especially if you aren’t going to graduate school, wouldn’t rather graduate with a high GPA that will make you more competitive?
