Anybody else gotten a supplemental application to UCD? I had heard they did them for Berkeley but a surprise for Davis. Anyone have thoughts, info, insights?

I also got the supplement from UC Davis…
I’m thankful they didn’t reject me but it kinda crushes my dreams for getting accepted to the top UC’s haha

What supplemental application? What does it ask? Is for freshmen or transfers?

bkalllday1 the supplement is only sent out to students who they want more info on. Usually regarding grades, a special talent you described or something else that caught their eye. It’s my understanding that they need more info because you are “on the bubble” in some way.

i got one too. it was surprising for me because i thought i was a fairly strong applicant. (And I agree with @daveed; it crushes my dreams for getting into the top UC’s ahhh)

i am turning mine is ASAP, and doing the teacher recommendation too.

Same- I was surprised as well, but unlike you guys, I thought I was going to get rejected (my grades are literally bordering 3.0 gpa…). I got the disability one because of my condition of narcolepsy, which I explained in my app caused me a lot of hardships- affected me academically, emotionally, etc.

I heard that the UC’s send supplemental apps from over a period of about a month, so I guess I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed, because the supplemental apps are the only chance I have with my mediocre grades, haha.

Although, I still doubt I’d get into my dream school (UCLA) with a 3.0 GPA, even with national art awards/explained medical condition… ughh

Yeah, I got one too. Any idea how long the responses for these should be? I don’t want to write essays if they are looking for short responses and vice versa. I got the “economic struggles” one.

Also, are they counting on us submitting it soon enough that our teacher can fill out the letter of recommendation within the 10 days, or is the time frame not important on that? It appears that Cal and UCLA have separate files to give to teachers which they then submit, but for UCD we have to submit the application before the teacher gets the prompt.

I got the disability one. I was also wondering if the deadline also applies to my counselor.

Apparently there are different versions of the supplement. ([Ms. Sun’s UC Admissions Blog](http://askmssun.livejournal.com/))
I got the hardship/disability one (9 total questions). @FutureNow, did yours have 9 too?

Btw, I asked a UCD rep. if getting a supplemental meant that I was a borderline applicant. The representative said no, and it just means they need a bit more information before making a solid decision (But why would they need more information if I’m a solid applicant? Hmm…)

For my teacher rec, I had asked my teacher ASAP. She was willing to do it and said she would finish it this weekend (she’s awesome!!), which is within the 10 days. I’m not sure if the WHOLE supplement needs to be done in 10 days or just our part.

Hope this helps!

How long are your guy’s responses?

I really hope we all get accepted.

I would advise you not to have your teacher complete the recommendation yet. I also chatted with a UCD rep earlier and they told me that the teacher’s portion should not be received until after we submit the supplemental application. The reason for this is because what they want to know from our teachers is not the usual “this student is an upstanding citizen,” rather they have a separate form for them to complete which is more like a questionnaire than a free response.

Edit: Look at the bottom of the supplemental application. There is a check box reading “Please check here if you would like to identify someone to submit a recommendation to support your application.” Once you click this it will drop down contact information that will be submitted to UCD for further contact with your teacher. The rep I talked to said that they do not expect this to be completed within the 10 day window.

The application which I received has 18 questions, the majority of which appear to be economic hardships targeting a reference I made to being from a lower income family in one of my essays, but a couple of the questions (~3-4) ask me to expand on leadership roles I had (club leadership), and a special talent which I also mentioned (drafting).

I also made it a point to ask (during the college live event) whether the supplemental application is deciding whether we are accepted/rejected from the school in general (as in they are reviewing us for our second choice major already), and the answer I received was that they simply need more information; they will be considering our first choice majors with the knew knowledge in mind.

Edit 2: I just looked at Mrs. Sun’s blog which you linked and I don’t think she really understands what the 18 question application is. She states that it is a “borderline” application, but yet every question it asks is about economic hardship and how it effected me/how I can overcome it if I were to enroll at Davis.

Hey David, when I was chatting with a Davis rep yesterday I asked about this. They said that the amount of information submitted does not matter and that they will read a two sentence explanation just the same as a ten sentence one. The rep specifically said “as much as a ten sentence” response, so I do think I need to cut down on a couple of mine which are running a bit long at ~15 sentences. Basically just say what you feel is necessary to help the readers understand the special circumstance which they are asking about. I know that the “special talent” supplement which my friend received should probably go more in depth for each of the three questions than, say, mine which has 18 questions.

@FutureNow, wow thanks for all the information! After reading your post, I will agree that Ms Suns posts may not be 100% factual… I believe she relies on her readers to help her (ie: sending her the supplemental questions so she can see the questions.) I mean, she had to update her view of the Davis supplemental (update blog post).

I also submitted my questionnaire a few days ago. Once I submitted
it, my teacher got an email about it. I was not aware that the teacher recommendation would be like a questionnaire, instead of a free response. How interesting.

@FutureNow, thanks again for all the new information regarding the supplementals!

“Once you click this it will drop down contact information that will be submitted to UCD for further contact with your teacher. The rep I talked to said that they do not expect this to be completed within the 10 day window.”

OK! Thank God!

I got nothing. :’( Nothing in my email from davis. I think I should just accept my fate now.

I got a supplemental application too!!!

@thetavixx, take it as a good sign. Davis is giving you more space to expand on a special circumstance that they found interesting in your initial application so don’t blow it off! There is no word cap to any of the responses so make sure to give them plenty of information to make an informed decision.
