Recently I have heard great things about UCD and not so great things about UCSD. It seems that UCD rivals UCSD academically and is much better socially. I was wondering which one would provide an overall more satisfying experience?

most people would say UCSD is better academically, especially for the premed and enginnering majors. ucd is deffintally better for agriculture majors. socially davis is probably better. i would say SD ranks more with La in academics, but due to its poor social life gives la a boost.

yea
what do u want to study?

Are you majoring in Biology?

Linguistics

so if i were to major in computer science or ee (not sure which one i will like more) should i go to davis, irvine or cal poly slo?

i dont really want to go to a commuter school such as uci but if its engineering is so much better than davis' than i might. also is cal poly a good college town within the same mold as davis except that it has a beach?

2 questions do u plan to go to grad school and do you want to work in norcal socal or somewhere else after college

i dont plan on going to grad school unless job market is absolutely horrendous and i would prefer to work in norcal (silicon valley!) unless my experience in socal is pleasant, but i am a norcal guy

and my initial preference would have to be ucdavis just because i really like their campus (can ne1 comment on cal poly slo campus and campus life?)

I also was consoidering Davis before I chose Cal Poly, as both have reputable programs and are situated in college towns. Ultimately, i really enjoy being on the coast rather than inland, and liked the fact that CP is udergrad-oriented. And from my experience, Cal Poly has a better rep in Norcal than Socal.

how nice is the campus in terms of environmental surroundings, social life, campus activity and cheap food.....haha

Weather is very nice, usually in the high 60's- mid 70's(rarely reaching extremes). The top of campus sits on a hill, which can be annoying when wanting to get to the top from the bottom. The environment is beautiful, though, IMO. The downtown scene is pretty cool. There are college-oriented bars and clubs throughout. Campus activity usually peaks on thursday, which is UU Hour(University Union). A live band plays and all sorts of clubs have tables set up for people to look through. One negative is that campus food is VERY expensive. Anyway, just a few thoughts of mine.

sounds great, how bout intrmural sports (im looking to continue to play bball after varsity hs team). only downside i see so far is food price, i need meat.

may i ask wat are u majoring in cuz i wanna knoe how hands on the engineering department is compared to the more graduate research oriented UCs.......btw did u check out ucd and uci before deciding on slo?

Intramurals are fun. I participated in football for two years and am doing softball this Spring. I think Basketball if offered all three quarters, but you can check that. I'm majoring in biology and seem to have more labs than my bio-major friends at other UC's. That could be why Cal Poly kids have a tough time graduating on time. I was accepted to davis and was seriously considering it, but Irvine's rep wasn't nearly what it is today(4 years later), and I didn't apply.

Straight up, let me say UCD definatly has a better social life, if your the kind of guy whos going to study during the week, and maybe want to go out on the weekends maybe hit a few parties, UCD is the place for you! UCD definatly rivals UCSD now, with a better agricultural base, and the leading Vet school in the nation UCD now has an amazing reputation. Also majors within engineering, and bio are now ranked very highly in UCD, and with a 98% rate of students getting a job in teh lab / area of their choice coming out of engineering WITHIN THE 1st YEAR... this is proven... i hope i helped in your decision, and i hope to see you at UCD next year!

Pacifist thanks for your response, here are a few more questions: What types of activities are there to do and how often do they happen? Speakers? Theatre? Seminars? What do the kids do in their free time? Is there anything to do in Sacramento? Is the environment overall intellectually stimulating?

Thanks,

Wicked

well im getting the sense that cal poly slo and ucd are both very nice campuses that are college towns with alot of things to do. only thing to decide for me is whether i like the snow (ucd-lake tahoe) or beach (slo) more. btw, what is the usual weather for davis....is it exactly like sac where it gets hot and humid all the time?

Definitely similar schools in their relaxed atmospheres and college-town settings. However, I would recommend visiting each school on Spring Break or thereabouts, just before you make your decision. Cal Poly has Open House in April and Davis has something similar. Good luck!

Tahoe > cold beach ><

i wish i could, thing is ucd and uci are at the end of the week of my spring break so that weekend is locked up and i cant go visit cpslo cuz scool start again
