UCD vs NYU GSP please help :(

I applied under econ for both schools. I think UCD is a great school considering I have a lot of great friends who go there and I personally wanted to go to California for college. (I’m choosing UCD over UCI and UCSB) However, my parents want me to go to a school in east coast and only school on east coast i’m considering is NYU… although I only got accepted as General Studies Program (thus i have to spend my freshmen year in London… err gnna have to burn a lot of money… :() But I think it is true that NYU provides somewhat better education… Help me out please!

In terms of rank, yes they are a bit higher up (NYU being 34; UCD being 42) but really it's up to you as to where you want to go. It seems you want to go to UCD, so if YOU want to, then you should. Also as you said, NYU will be financially more burdensome then UCD.

Academically, there isn't much of a difference. Private schools are heavily favored by the USNWR, so don't pay much attention to the rankings. It's all about the environment at the schools.

NYU no questions asked lol
nyu was my dream school and i didnt get in..so now im heading towards davis

Idee, <.< just because it's yours doesn't mean it is everyones lol and that doesn't justify picking it (your reason for HIM to go that is)

edit: my bad if you were joking lol xD

Thanks guys for replies.. I'm still considering one of those two.. My parents still want me to go to NYU but WESTCOAST WAS MY DREAM ><;; and plus my gf got into stanford.. gg

as a transfer from UC Davis to NYU, I think it's a balanced option. UC Davis is an ok school, you'll receive a good education and get a good job probably. at NYU, the GSP program is really looked down upon (I'm in Stern now), I think everyone looks down on GSP (but you will eventually get out of it I guess, and the people I have met here are absolutely incredible. Some of the smartest, most diverse, and definitely most wealthy I have ever met. Much better "world" experience, plus you're going to London. If you can afford it, and if you can make sure you study hard to get into at least NYU's College of Arts and Science after GSP then I'd say NYU.

Wait I'm a little confused by what you (ilikeoranges) said. You transfered into NYU after your freshman year. But NYU makes you stay in the GSP for 2 years. And Stern has a 4 year business program. So aren't you gonna graduate 3 years behind?

I transferred after my Sophomore year.
In response to your PM and your message above:

My stats were: 3.9 college GPA with massive # of units (I was Junior standing) (top 1.5%), studied abroad (UC EAP after freshman at UCD), 4 internships (charity abroad, governor's office, morgan stanley, pricewaterhousecoopers), part time job at UCD annual fund, davis honors program, treasurer of a large club at UCD, and had a reason for initially going to UCD and then wanting to transfer. I also submitted 4 letters of recommendation (requirement for NYU was 1). I had a 1350 SAT I, and 790 SAT II Math 2C. I heard the Stern program does not care so much about English scores. I applied directly to Stern, you CANNOT apply for internal transfer to Stern if you transfer to CAS/Tisch/Steinhardt/etc first.

The acceptance rate last year for Stern (the biz program) was about 11%. I remember reading acceptance stats of about ~110/1000 or so, so it's 100% harder than being accepted as a freshman which has an acceptance rate of about 23%.

As a transfer I can still graduate on time. Realistically the Stern program is only 2 years long, you are a "Sternie" as a freshman but you still gotta take the normal classes that everyone needs to take before you get into the finance classes. So, I basically filled up almost all of my electives and then now I'm just taking the major classes and I can graduate on time.

Let me know if you have any more questions, I think the deadline for transfer is coming up. Good luck

P.S. I was rejected by Harvard, Columbia, etc. Also accepted at G-Town McDonough, UCLA Biz Econ. Rejected at Berkeley Economics because they have a very strict course requirements (which I did not fulfill), but both Gtown McDonough and NYU Stern are better than Cal Econ anyways. So if you want Cal Econ get those courses done, I believe Haas is even MORE strict on coursework prereqs for applying than their econ

Go with Davis. NorCal is awesome, plus you'll get to see your GF. Academically, NYU and UCD are the same, so it's a win-win.

I have to agree that NYU GSP is probably the same level, if not worse than UC Davis. You can always transfer after attending Davis or after attending NYU. It basically comes down to fit, and how much you're willing to spend for your education (50k vs ~12-20k per year)
