UCD vs. UCI Econ

My friend is having a really hard time deciding between Davis for managerial economics or Irvine for economics. Which would be better in terms of academics and job prospects?

She has visited both and has decided that she likes both environments the same.

I cannot speak for Davis and their academics, just UCI since that will be my alma mater come June 06.

UCI has a solid Economics program. I'll be honest and say it is the fall back major for many bio/engineering majors who can't make it. Nonetheless, econ is seen as being a great source for recruiters at UCI because it combined quant and qual skills. If you wanna go quantitative, take on the accounting minor (although the average GPA to get in is a 3.64). If you want more qualitative skills, I'd recomment the management minor, with classes like marketing, Org. Behavior, and Brand Management (btw..brand was my favorite class bar none at UCI). I'm an econ major and I received my offer from a fortune 100 company after my last summer internship. This coming career fair will boast over 150 companies coming to UCI.

In addition, there are eight business clubs at UCI and growing. When I was a freshman, we had one business fraternity. The newly established umbrella organization for business clubs is the Alliance of Business Students. Check out their website at www.absuci.com.

LMJSF, your friend might want to see this about UCD:

Sonic One,
after reading 'Concern expressed over lack of undergrad business major',
http://www.californiaaggie.com/media/storage/paper981/news/2006/01/26/CampusNews/Concern.Expressed.Over.Lack.Of.Undergrad.Business.Major-1505864.shtml?norewrite200604230121&sourcedomain=www.californiaaggie.com
regarding Econ major in UCD, I would like to know if top accounting firms like Deloitte show up to the UCI career fair.

As of right now, they do not explicitly attend UCI Career Fairs. HOWEVER, there is an accounting association at UCI and if a student joins the accounting association, they gain access to recruiters from all the big four. My good friend was last year's president and the most active recruiters were PWC and E&Y.

There has been a major push by one of the top ten firms, Grant Thornton, to recruit more UCI Students. But rest assured that once we get that business major, you'll see them on campus at career fairs.

So does this mean that UCI would be the better choice?

In terms of the California Aggie article, I would like to point out that Irvine (at least currently) also has a "lack of undergrad business major."

you're right, it does not have right one right now. But the business major has been proposed to the senate and UCI expects it to pass and have the major ready for Fall 2007.

I know this is a fairly old thread, but does anyone have any news pertaining to UC Davis' development into being a more ideal candidate for the big 4? Or just improving preparation for the undergrads

UCD has one of the largest internship programs in the country. There are ample opportunities for students to gain professional experience through internships while studying at UCD. Additionally if you read the article there are also business clubs and fraternal organizations at UCD.

Collegemom, I'm kinda confused about the UC Davis internpship opportunities. How can it have one of the largest internship opportunities when there's not much surrounding the campus and area. Due to its location, are most of these opportunities on campus, in Sacramento, or out of state? Can you clarify?

I suggest you look here.

Also spend some time exploring the web-site. If you have questions you should call them for further information.

UCI econ is super easy. You can graduate in three years easily if you have enough units. The major is more of a three-year course than a four year. This is probably a product of the bio/engineering dropouts that wanna graduate in four years after failing all their bio classes first year. I'm not sure how it is for Davis.

How well you find internships/jobs depends on you as a person rather than UCD/UCI IMO. They're the same and will have the same opportunities for you. Neither one will land you a job the other couldn't. I have a friend who works for two profs doing research and an internship this summer. I don't buy it's much easier to get internships in davis.

They really are both the same in terms of opportunities. However, UCI is adding a BA in business so the school will have more exposure to companies in coming years.
