UCF or UF

Hey everyone,

I am a male high school senior seeking advice for my future college plans. So far I have narrowed it down to UF and UCF (accepted to both). I have heard mixed things about both schools and would like to get anyones input.

I am looking at going into the Business field, particularly Finance or Marketing. Currently, I have a brother at UF who does not want me to go there, saying that the school is outdated and lacks decent administration. I've heard however that UF is a better school career wise and can provide great internship/ job opportunities upon graduation.

UCF on the other hand seems newer, but in my opinion, the school just seems like its' never taken seriously.

On a side note, I'm interested in getting involved with Greek Life and student government.

I would appreciate any input that you can give me.

Thanks!

UF is the best school in Florida by a wide margin.

Even in Florida, no one takes UCF seriously. Outside of Florida, no one will have a clue what you’re talking about when you say UCF. At least the Gators give UF some brand recognition.

Not sure if there is anything else to consider.

I wouldn’t study business at UCF. The business school at UCF is kind of a “catch all” for students that can’t hack it in other majors. They dumb down a lot of the business classes because of the sheer volume of students in the program. UCF is very good for many majors - computer science, engineering, math - not so great for others. It is a newer school and its reputation is growing, but still has a way to go in several areas. I’d prefer to see them reduce their enrollment, but they’ve decided to go in the opposite direction.

UF probably has a better business school, but I’m not as familiar with it. You’re going to take basically the same classes at both schools because the state’s curriculum across the state universities is pretty much the same. At UF you’re probably going to have business classes that are taught by professors with more experience and publishings, and the corresponding classes might be more difficult as a result.

I went to UCF and studied Statistics. It was very difficult. No curves, difficult material - but I learned a lot. They don’t dumb down any mathematics based classes at UCF. I saw many corresponding tests given in the same subjects at UF, and the tests I had at UCF were much more difficult.

But honestly, it is up to you what you learn in college, regardless of where you go. You get out of it what you put into it. Pick a difficult major that forces you to study hard. You will be better for it in the end.
