UCF Scholarship '17

It was in the “To-Do” section of the page. Listed as an action item (accept/decline/request extension). Not in financial aid section.

@ks3210 - On the “To-Do” section of the page.

I spoke to admissions and they said that they are continuing to notify people as time goes on, and that they are unable to tell me whether or not I received any awards. Just curious, what date did you guys apply to UCF?

My son applied on 9/20. Nothing yet. His stats are not very high, but high enough to get something. We’ll see.

@Going2UCF S sent off for the Burnett Honors Progam application, but he’s not yet sure whether to apply. Since he’s going to the Engineering School (Mechanical Engineering), he’s not sure whether the benefits outweigh the additional coursework and raised expectations. Burnett does appear to be geared more toward the liberal arts programs.

Would love to hear – and pass on to S – about the positives of being in Burnett (anecdotally or from experience).

@VABogart - He should definitely apply! The Burnett Honors College gives him priority registration throughout his time at UCF which means, most likely, he’ll never have a class he needs fill up prior to his registration (allowing him to graduate on time). He’ll also have access to general education classes that cap enrollment at about 20 students per class (15 for composition classes) - so he’ll likely avoid any mass lecture classes. There is an extra layer of academic advising through the honors college.

There really is no additional workload and, I believe, that some of the honors general education classes have grades based on participation and discussions rather than based on exams - so less stress than the non-honors versions of the same general education classes. There is no separate thesis or senior project requirement for the honors college. If a student wants to complete a thesis, they can do so through a separate “Honors in the Major” program and this accomplishment is recognized separately on their degree and transcript.

Finally, the honors college is centrally located on the campus and offers a nice place for students to study and catch up in between classes. I graduated from a similar honors program in the early 1990s and it made college much less confusing and intimidating - there was always someone available, on the honors staff, to help me navigate my large university whenever I felt like I needed additional guidance - it definitely kept me from ever feeling like just a number.

Here’s a couple FAQs from their website:

Honors classes ruin my college GPA?

Honors classes are not designed to be harder and they typically do not cover more material than their non-Honors equivalents. In fact, at the end of every fall and spring semester each Honors student is audited to make certain an Honors level GPA (3.2 UCF GPA and 3.0 Honors GPA) is maintained, and we find that, actually, students tend to perform better in Honors classes than in non-Honors classes. Remember that likeminded, bright, curious, and talented students populate Honors classes, which are taught by some of the best UCF faculty. The result is an engaging and exciting classroom environment that will help you continue to excel!

How many Honors credits do I need to take?

In order to fulfill the Honors coursework requirements for the University Honors Program students must successfully complete:

  1. Honors Freshmen Symposium (2 credit hours)
  2. 4 (12 credit hours) Honors General Education Program classes
  3. 3 or 4 upper division Honors classes, depending on major, one of which must be an Interdisciplinary Seminar

Here’s a list of honors classes available for Engineering & Computer Science majors:

College of Engineering & Computer Science | College of Optics & Photonics

1 Honors interdisciplinary seminar
2 of the following Honors upper-division courses:
COP 3223H – Honors Introduction to Programming with C (Fall & Spring; CS, IE, IT)
COP 3502H – Honors Computer Science I (Spring; ComE, CS, IT)
COP 3503H – Honors Computer Science II (Fall; ComE, CS)
COT 3100H – Honors Introduction to Discrete Structures (Fall & Spring; ComE, CS)
EEL 3004C – Honors Electrical Networks (Fall; ComE, ElE, PSE)*
EEL 3123C – Honors Networks and Systems (Spring; ComE, ElE, PSE)
EGN 3310H – Honors Engineering Analysis-Statics (Fall & Spring; All Engineering)
EGN 3321H – Honors Engineering Analysis-Dynamics (Fall & Spring; All Engineering)
EGN 3343H – Honors Thermodynamics (Spring; AE, CiE, EnE, IE, ME)

PHY 3101H – Honors Physics for Engineers and Scientists III (Spring; CS, ElE, PSE)
STA 3032H – Honors Probability and Statistics for Engineers (Fall & Spring; All Engineering)

Hope this helps!

@ks3210 My son applied on 9-5-16 and was accepted on 9-15-16 (through the Top 10 Knights program). His scholarship offer posted on 11-15-16. I think that was the first day UCF started posting scholarship offers so they may have less waiting time for listing scholarship offers, moving forward.

@ks3210 -applied on 8/1and notified of acceptance 9/17.Took right about 6 weeks. I hope you hear back something soon re: scholarship! [-O< Don’t get discouraged.

@VABogart - I’ve seen a couple reviews of Burnett Honors College on CC. Maybe that’ll be a helpful in your S’s decision.

@16mom828 - WoW!! Lots of of great information. Thanks for that!

Anyone else getting bombed by UCF housing emails?

Yes!!!

@16mom828 Thanks for the information on Burnett – sounds like great upside, and no downside. Hope he applies.

S just heard back on UCF Housing – he got confirmed a place in the Towers Plaza! UCF moved very quickly on this – he submitted the housing form & deposit 11/17, and he heard back this morning. So with or without Burnett, S will be in the Towers. (UCF couldn’t pinpoint which of the four Towers, but assuming that info will come later as they fill up spaces.)

Are there any downsides to accepting the scholarship if I’m unsure whether I’ll go or not? Might have accepted it when I shouldn’t have lol

@VABogart that’s great news on his housing preference! I actually have two boys starting next year at UCF and they both have been confirmed for the Towers, too - it will be here before we know it! From what I saw online, it looks like students will start to find out about their fall housing assignments sometimes in July/August.

My son’s scholarship letter came in today’s mail - the Pegasus Gold is the same as last year - $14K over 4 years.

If they all remain the same, I think the various awards look like this:

Knights Achievement (OOS) $44K
Provost $30K
Gold $14K
Silver $10K
Bronze $6K

Just received letter…silver 10k over 4 yrs

Also just got the letter - gold is indeed $14,000

I have gotten literally dozens of UCF housing emails over the last two days!

Got a letter confirming Provost for $30K. Are we supposed to accept the scholarship if we are not sure if my S will go to UCF.

@16mom828 . You provided a wealth of helpful information. It seems like an awesome program. I’m going to send off for my application to the Honors college first thing Monday morning. Thank you.
Congrats to those of you that have received your official scholarship letters. Fingers crossed to those who haven’t heard yet L-)
