UCF Scholarship '17

@ks3210 - Congratulations! What wonderful news!!! :slight_smile:

Update! I got the Silver Pegasus award  And Iā€™m sending my Burnett application today so hopefully that goes well too. I hope everyone else gets their scholarship soon!

It looks like the second round of scholarships is being released. My daughter was just offered Pegasus Gold

HI everyone! I had a question! My friend called UCF inquiring about scholarships and they told her they would start giving merit awards the second week of school (after enrollment?!?!?) It sounded like the most ridiculous thing ever. Plus it does not make sense because as seen on this thread, people are receiving merit awards. Can anyone discredit or confirm this? Itā€™s a bit worrying.

While S is waiting on the Burnett Honors College application, my sense is this ā€“ UCF is absolutely running circles around the other colleges on the application process.

University of Florida ā€“ hasnā€™t even given S a decision on his application, but says he should rush to give a non-refundable housing fee in order to secure housing. Huh?

Texas A&M ā€“ gives S an acceptance to the arts & sciences school, but has given no decision on the Engineering School, which is the school he has applied for. Texas A&M says that if S doesnā€™t get into the Engineering School, donā€™t worry, heā€™s still admitted to A&M. Um, not to disappoint all those in Aggieland, but if S doesnā€™t get into the Engineering School, heā€™s go to engineering school anyway ā€“ somewhere else.

Virginia Tech ā€“ allows early application decisions only on a binding basis, effectively blocking out S from making an earlier application to the school, since heā€™s not absolutely committed to VA Tech. Now he wonā€™t hear until March/April.

Meanwhile, amid all this dithering, UCF has already (i) accepted S to the Mechanical Engineering program, (ii) given him a sizeable (Knights Achievement) scholarship, (iii) reserved his housing at the Towers Plaza, and (iv) is now considering his honors college application.

All that to say, way to go UCF!

@VABogart UCF is also the only school that made a genuine effort to reach out to the parents. That is part of the reason UCF has the second largest undergrad enrollment, make it easy, move fast, get to close early. That is why I chose UCF over 35 years ago, they gave me an acceptance before I had even finished my app for other schools - bird in the hand.

Did you get info on the Compass (Convincing Outstanding Math-Potential Admits to Succeed in STEM) Program? My D has received a post card and a brochure. I am thinking it is because she has decent SAT Math score but selected an non-STEM major. I wish they had that when I went there.

@16mom828 Thanks for the information. Weā€™ve been logging into the Burnett website, and when S puts in the NID and his password, a page block shows up saying that the web page is open only to Burnett Honors students and those who have applied to the Honors College. S sent in his Burnett Honors application a week ago last Tuesday and we had confirmation (via FedEX) that UCF received it on Monday. So not sure whatā€™s going on. Should S call the school to see whatā€™s up? Thanks.

@teenstogether123 Iā€™m guessing that UCF was telling your friend when the actual merit awards would be disbursed or ā€œgiven outā€ by their Office of Student Financial Assistance. I think UCF started posting merit award scholarship offers, directly to the myUCF accounts of selected students, back on November 15th. The actual scholarship money is posted to the student accounts the week after the drop/add period each semester (that way UCF only gives out the scholarship money to students that are properly enrolled each semester).

Hereā€™s the disbursement overview from their web page:

Disbursement of financial aid is the process in which financial aid awards (scholarships, grants, loans, etc.) are posted to the studentā€™s account. As this process takes place, students may see changes to their anticipated aid, awards, and charges.

Timing of disbursements is contingent upon students meeting all conditions for receiving aid and confirmation of an academic activity or attendance. See Confirming an Academic Activity for additional information.

Disbursement of financial aid funds will begin the week following Drop/Swap & Add and continue each week throughout the semester as students complete and meet all eligibility requirements.

At the end of the Drop/Swap and Add period, awards are adjusted based on the studentā€™s final enrollment for the term. Students who are less than full-time may have their financial aid award(s) reduced and/or cancelled due to not enrolling in the minimum required hours for the aid program. See Program Eligibility Charts for more information.

The disbursement process is initiated by posting financial aid funds to the studentā€™s account. Charges appearing on the studentā€™s account will be deducted at that time. Once the process is finalized, students will be able to confirm their disbursement on the myUCF Portal ā€œView My Account.ā€ Students are also notified of the disbursement via email to their Knights email account.

If charges remain on the studentā€™s account after disbursements, or if subsequent charges are made to the studentā€™s account, it is the studentā€™s responsibility to pay them. To track the awards that have not disbursed, students may view the information on the myUCF Portal ā€œStudent Self Service.ā€

@VABogart Itā€™s worth a call. With UCF being closed last Thursday and Friday, they may be backlogged in posting the incoming applications.

@CaucAsianDad S hasnā€™t received anything about Compass. Will let you know if he receives anything. Right now, hoping for a response from Burnett.

@VABogart My daughter was accepted into the honors college early last month, and she still gets the same error message when attempting to log on to the website. I would definitely call, as the site doesnā€™t appear to be a clear indication of application status.

@16mom828 Thank you so much for the information!

I can confirm that the 2017 UCF National Hispanic Scholarship for Florida Residents is $48,000 ($6K a semester for 8 semesters). You have to take 12 credit hours a semester and maintain an overall cumulative GPA of 3.2. It would replace any other ā€œmeritā€ scholarships, like the Pegasus and Provost.

In-State/Out-of-State: In-State

Find out yet?: Accepted and got scholarship recentlyā€¦

Date you found out: December 3 (literally yesterday)

Semester attending (Fall/Spring): Fall but Idk if Iā€™m going

Whether or not Scholarship money is make or break decision in attending UCF: I honestly donā€™t know if Iā€™m going to UCFā€¦itā€™s kind of way too close to home for me, and I applied to a lot of other schools, too. If I go, Iā€™ll have to live at home. Itā€™s understandable why I got less of a scholarship than I thought I would receive (Tuition isnā€™t covered), but that just goes to show that nothing is guaranteed! They said themselves that they look at a lot of things other than just your test scores and GPA so anything can happen. Itā€™s a combination of a lot of things!

On a separate note, I live very close to UCF and have spoken to advisors who say that UCF really favors dual-enrollment students who keep their GPAā€™s up within their dual-enrolled college. I feel like the 23 dual enrolled courses that Iā€™ve taken was the strongest part of my application; Hopefully strong enough to get me into UF! (fingers-crossed)

UCF is my second choice to UF
WILL BE APPLYING TO UCF BURNETT HONORS COLLEGE

Teenstogether, youā€™ll have a Florida Bright Futures scholarship on top of that Pegasus Award.

@Trisherella Okay, I really hope the both of them combined covers at least tuition then. Iā€™ve already resolved within myself I canā€™t live in the dorms

S just got accepted into the Burnett Honors College! So excited for him. The application was mailed November 22nd, so it took two weeks to hear back.

Weā€™re assuming that he waits for the paperwork to be mailed in February to give confirmation of acceptance?

S is really excited about UCF ā€“ at this point, he may not even wait to hear back from his other college choices.

@VABogart Fantastic news! Congratulations to your S! =D>

Congrats VA, I think your son will love UCF. We just toured it last weekā€¦I was impressed.

Teenstogether, Iā€™m sorry the financial situation is keeping your from dorm life. I think Pegasus plus Bright Futures will cover your tuition for sure. Housing would be another matter entirely. Your stats are really good. For example, at Florida Southern youā€™d be eligible for their full ride (tuition plus housing) scholarship. I hope youā€™ve also applied to a number of places where you can get more scholarship money. For example FGCU and Florida Atlantic would likely give you more than UCF.
