So, what did you think of the lightning display last night, especially those of you from out of state? It was like the 4th of july around here ... seriously dangerous.

Was this around 6pm yesterday? I thought D was just being dramatic with me on the phone (well, she was). D called me from inside Target at Waterford Lakes (food shopping) saying she was being held hostage with a friend because the thunderstorms were so severe that they were afraid to run to the car.

I laughed and told her, Welcome to Florida weather, wait until hurricane season!

I spoke to her a few times this morning and she didn’t mention storms overnight, I’ll have to ask her tonight.

Yeah, it was rocking and rolling around here between about 6pm and 9pm. Within the Oviedo/East Orange county area around UCF, I think there were more lightning strikes in that 3 hour period than all the rockets that went off on the 4th. I was speaking to an Oviedo cop who was near me when the Tornado sirens were going off all around town, and she said that they’d spotted some circulation near UCF. Had my husband call my son in The Towers and suggest he go to the bottom floor, just in case. He said it was crazy watching the lightning outside his window. Thankfully, I think people took it seriously. We’ve had a lot of people getting struck by lightning this summer in Central Florida. Nah … Hurricane’s are totally different. You get days – ad nauseum – to prepare. Doesn’t mean there isn’t some wicked stuff – we got wolloped by Charley and lost power for several days – but I had a huge amount of time to prepare.

P.S. We’re in Hurricane Season (June 1-Nov 30th) So far so good … all quiet on the Atlantic/gulf front. shhhhhh! :)

I know … shhh… I remember reading about Faye last year during Fall move-in!!

For those of you from out of state… Thunderstorms are as common as rush hour during the same hours. lol. That is when the east and west coast breeze come together and you get the experience that occurred last night.

Hurricanes in central Florida are usually not serious, just lots of rain. With some of them we loose power and one year we had three come across central Florida and that was sad. Many folks lost their roofs and trees. I was without power for 2 weeks. ICK.

Anyway welcome to Florida.

My daughter told me she was surprised to wake up at 2am to hear the grounds crew cuttng the grass on campus. I’m guessing, coming from the northeast, they do that during the summer because of the very hot daytime temperatures and the daily thunderstorms that crop up?

Yeah, besides the heat … and right now it’s 93 not figuring in the blasted humidity, the afternoon thunderstorms in the summer can really put you behind schedule when you have a lot of lawn to cut. One of the reasons my h hired a lawn service after my s decided he could get more comfortable work in AC and left us high and dry, LOL, was that he’d always be rushing home from work to only make it 1/3 of the way through the lawn in the afternoon. I was forever banned from cutting lawns after we spent $250 in medical bills right after we got married and I mowed the lawn and it was discovered I was allergic to the south and all the stuffies outside.

P.S. Remember … it’s absolutely beautiful from Oct. to May. But the absolute worst … mid-july to Sept, when you’re praying for that first breath of fall air.

P.SS. She’ll also begin to tell the seasons – fall and spring – by when the love bugs appear. Ah … Florida (shhhh … and I won’t even mention the very large Palmetto bug (think huge cockroach) that crawled up my arm the other day. <g> Oh … and did you hear … we’re instituting python hunting season. Apparently, too many people have let them buggers go and they’re infiltrating south florida.</g>

They always cut the lawns at night as there are too many people around during the day. Usually they do the housing areas first as to not wake people up, so it shouldn’t be that late if they were in her complex… Outside of housing, the entire campus goes into a heavy cleaning/maintenance mode every night to prepare for the next day.

Cutting the lawn at 2am is just crazy. College kids might put up with it because they don’t have much say. No way they would get away with that in an adult community.

Usually they do the areas around housing first, usually finishing those areas no later then 10pm… were they mowing in her complex or could she just hear it from farther away? Its not realistic for them to mow the lawns during the day, there is just too many people outside, walking around, and likewise, they wouldn’t be able to get away with that either. It would be like disney cutting lawns in their parks while they’re open, it just isn’t all too feasible.

I am on the top floor of one of the Academic dorms and one night I smelled grass… I then looked out my window to see a lawn mower. I did not expect that. I didn’t hear it though, so it didn’t bother me.

You would be surprised at when things get done. Its very difficult during the summer to get outside chores done. First you have the heat, then the storms… The chores have to get done at some point and for the folks who work outside for a living…

those were some intense storms, the most intense in four or five months. Never seen lighting go on like that for so long

i was watching the new harry potter movie during the storms…
hahaha
