UCF tops UF as state’s largest university

Interesting.

And the traffic around UCF proves it…I must say that if your Ss or Ds can make it through college without a car accident that in itself is an amazing accomplishment. Very scary!

Nothing like Gainesville, seriously. We were just at UF moving our D in the end of last week. (S goes to UCF and we live local). I have never been more scared for my car in my life than driving that SW34th St/Archer Road area. Youzer! :)

UCF Begins Record-Setting Fall Semester Today

The projected 3,800 new freshmen who start classes today posted an average high school GPA of 3.8 and an average SAT score of 1221, both the best in UCF’s history. Nearly 500 new freshmen attending UCF’s prestigious Burnett Honors College posted the top credentials in the college’s history with an average GPA of 4.2 and an average SAT score of 1373.

UCF also expects that the fall freshman class will include 55 newly enrolled National Merit Scholars – the second-highest number in the university’s history. UCF again expects to be ranked in the top 50 universities in the country for the number of National Merit Scholars enrolled.

UCF anticipates a total enrollment of about 52,000, up from 50,254 in fall 2008. There will be about 44,500 undergraduates on campus and about 7,500 graduate students. Currently the fifth-largest university in the country, UCF expects to remain in the top five and possibly move up to fourth this fall.

UCF ranked in the top five among national universities in the “Top Up-and-Coming Schools” list published this week by U.S. News & World Report. The list recognizes universities that “recently made the most promising and innovative changes in academics, faculty, students, campus or facilities.”

UCF again made U.S. News’ list of top 20 national universities from which students graduate with the least debt.

Yikes! I hope D #2 can get in for next year!

Oh I have been to UF as well. I have horses and live down by Orlando so when we have emergencies with the horses off to UF we go with a horse trailer. Try hauling a horse trailer with all the traffic. :frowning: SCARY

“I think people may overblow the significance of size,” he said.

Glover said UF doesn’t mind giving up the distinction of being the state’s largest university.

“The University of Florida stands for quality first and foremost,” he said. “I’m not trying to besmirch the University of Central Florida’s reputation here, but quality is what we’re after.”

Congrats. It looks like UCF is trying to be the next Miami-Dade College, in size and quality. When it comes to universities, bigger is not better.

JEZ21, where do you get your stats to make statements like “UCF is trying to be the next Miami-Dade College, in size and quality”???

As someone who has both attended and worked at both UF and UCF, I can tell you that the administrative infrastructure at both schools are extremely alike. Any school can simply cut down in size and reject a larger amount of students to increase their freshman profile. In fact, this article from USF’s student newspaper states that their school is doing just that.

[The Oracle - Freshman class smaller, more competitive](http://www.usforacle.com/freshman-class-smaller-more-competitive-1.1849560)

The fact is that if you can increase your freshman profile AND increase your enrollment, it shows you are fielding a more competitive crop of graduating high school seniors. UF and UCF have been doing this for years. The key difference this year is that UCF received a record number of transfer students both from community colleges around the state and from other state universities. In fact, UCF received more transfer students than any other university in Florida. Also, nearly 71,000 graduating high school seniors in Florida had their SAT scores sent to Florida universities. Of those 71,000, UCF received the majority of reports, with over 48% of all SAT score submissions listing UCF as their school of choice.

SAT Test Score Submissions:

UCF = 34,333

UF = 29,603

FSU = 27,402

USF = 24,914

FIU = 13,117

FAU = 10,791

U of Miami = 10,759

UNF = 8,458

In addition, UCF received more freshman applications AND more transfer applications than any other university in the state of Florida.

Many folks don’t realize what goes behind the significant growth of some of Florida’s state universities. Universities don’t just get big to get big. Just ask UF.
