UCF vs UF

Well, son got his acceptance letter from UF and there was no Honors invite. I'm going to have him call Monday and see if he can still apply to the UF Honors program.

Due to a late submission of a missing document, we are still waiting to hear from UCF's Honors College.

He's been offered a Pegasus Silver scholarship at UCF.

If he gets into the Honors College at UCF, (and assuming the UF honors college is a no-go) which school would you encourage him to attend? (it will be his decision).

What if he doesn't get into UCF Honors?

He is undecided about major - super strong in math a science, but not 100% sure that he wants to major in math/physics/engineering... If he decides to major in something that seems less than marketable (he's talking philosophy) we are going to strongly encourage (ie volunteer to pay for) a double major in math, physics, computer science or engineering.

Anyway, I'm jealous of all of you who have made your decisions....

UF is the better option regardless.

Engineering is ranked 24th, and Computer Science is ranked 37th best in the USA.

I really like UCF, but this isn't a decision that you're going to be able to arrive at without doing your own work, visiting both schools, weighing the options, and coming to your own conclusions. I know personally that I would have had a much less satisfying college time anywhere but UCF (there are so many opportunities here that just don't exist elsewhere), but for heaven's sake that's something your kid has to decide for his own.

Redslash -

I agree 100%. We're actually in a pretty good position to make this decision, with a kid at both schools. I have just found that there are a few families on these boards that could be our clones, and with the size of both schools there's might be some aspect that someone else is aware of that we've missed....

Case in point - I only recently started looking at the learning community housing situations at UF. These might give that "smaller feel" that I'm looking for to help my son to get involved and be successful.

We've visited both schools - a lot. If son starts to narrow his major choices down before May 1, we'll visit again, looking at those departments.

Well, I know that at UCF we have the LEAD Scholars program, which (if your S puts any effort into it) can really act like a small-school environment and help your S get that community feel. If you're looking for an aspect you might have missed, that's a big one. My own college experience would have been far poorer without that opportunity, and if your student comes here I would highly recommend LEAD Scholars.

Good luck! :)
