UCF - What's good about it?

Hey all!

I am looking to apply to UCF as an out-of-state student once my senior year gets under way. I will visit the college in the summer time, so what can I expect if you have visited the college/are an alumni?

Also, how strong is the English/Journalism department?

  • UCF is a large, modern school (you can decide if that is good or bad) with a centralized layout so it is only about 15 minutes walking time between the buildings
  • Good honors college
  • There is a lot to do in the Orlando area
  • UCF grads have good employment opportunities in the central Florida area, particular those with CS and Engineering degrees.
  • Do not believe the commuter school remarks. Yes there are a lot of students who live off campus (there are almost 3,000,000 in the Orlando DMA, so there are a lot of locals) but there are over 6,500 beds on campus, plus another 4,000 off-campus beds that are owned by the university. There are also numerous housing partners who offer some very nice apartments very close by. Be sure to checkout the on campus and off campus housing when you visit.
  • Generous merit aid for NMF. OOS waivers based on financial need.
  • Great tailgating

English/Journalism is not one of UCFs strengths, however if you are high stats the honors college offers opportunities to go above and beyond the typical university experience. A couple English majors in the Honors College received Fulbright grants this year for example.

I recently visited the campus and I have applied from Minnesota, and it became my top choice. The campus is beautiful, it has more clubs and activities than you ever thought possible, and the overall feel of the school is amazing.

Spirit Splash is this week, you may want to Google it.
