Hi guys, yesterday I was accepted to UF (amazing!) but now I don't know what to do :(
About four months ago I applied to UCF and got accepted; I also applied to its EXCEL program which is for STEM majors and they accepted me as well. Right now I feel very stressed because I know that UF has a great engineering college but UCF is offering me a program that is going to help me during my engineering career.

By the way here is some info about EXCEL
- They give me priority schedule
- I get to take math and science courses with the people in my program
- There assign an academic advisor to every EXCEL student
- There is a paid undergraduate research experience in the spring semester of the sophomore year
- Only 200 student are accepted every year
- I get automatic acceptance to the GEMS program which is a tutoring club for engineering girls.
- UCF has an EXCEL Center that dedicated for the needs of the EXCEL students where free math and science tutoring will be provided,

So what do you think..should I accept UCF..even though UF is more nationally recognized and has better rankings?? At first UF way my number one school, but after visiting UCF's campus and knowing that I was accepted to Excel I started to consider UCF as a choice :(... BTW UF is not offering any type of scholarship and no Honors college
I really need some advice

Even though UF"s program is higher rated, IE is a strength at UCF; it’s a very good program. Did UCF offer a scholarship and did you also get into the honors program? UF honors does allow you to apply, I think they require an essay or two; as long as your grades/test scores are in the ballpark, most that apply get in.

@Gator88NE, thanks for replying Unfortunately my SAT scores are not high enough for UCF to consider me into their Honors college (I heard that you need a 2000 SAT to be considered as a competitive applicant) So I’m guessing that UF honors program is much more difficult to get in. Even though I’ve read on their websites that one can still apply with ‘low’ test scores the process is much more complicated and the chances of getting accepted are very low as well.

One thing that I’m really curious about is the tutoring at UF…do they help you if you are struggling in a course? I know that the EXCEL program at UCF offers their students a lot of help and a lot of advice.

UCF imo has better industrial engineering curriculum than UF. IE is not as “well-presented” in UF than at UCF. By this, UF actually merges courses with Business and Managenent colleges, which relate to IE but mostly indirectly. At UCF, you’d probably have a greater opportunity in IE since UCF actually ranks closer in that field and they don’t do this merge thing.

As far as UF honors program goes, I can tell you its not worth it (it really doesnt help besides the fact that you can pick classes earlier and you can take classes like origami???) Imo, the honors program isn’t for me and just about anyone gets in. As far as UCF goes, I don’t know how their program is but I could suspect it might be better than UF if it does anymore than what I said.

@HectorSalamanca: Yeah, I’ve heard the UCF Honors college is better that UF’s …oh and I didn’t know the merge thing that UF does. Thanks for letting me know :)

UF and UCF’s honors programs are similar (as are most programs).

While UCF has a solid program, UF has one of the top IE programs in the country. I’m not sure what classes are “Merged” but it’s not the IE core classes (at either school), perhaps we’re talking about electives?

Either way, both schools require very similar classes (which is to be expected from ABET accredited engineering programs!).

You may want to review the curriculum at each school…

IE is very much associated with business and business processes (that’s why so many IE’s end up as CEO’s and such). In fact, UF offers a concurrent OEM/MBA option, where after you graduate and get your first job, you can still work to complete a masters in IE and an MBA degree thru UF’s OEM (Outreach Engineering Management) program.

Sorry, got side tracked on this IE thing, my dd plans on being an IE major, so we’ve done a bunch of research on it, that’s why we had UCF as one of her top options. UF has the better program, but UCF’s program is very good, and IE is UCF’s strongest engineering program (IMHO).

UF does offer tutoring, as do most Universities.

UF Office of Academic Support (OAS) offers tutoring:

Thank you so much for your help @Gator88Ne. You are my favorite person here in College Confidential, you are always helping many people on many discussions and I can tell you are very unbiased. Thanks !
