<p>hey guys ... so I started this thread because I noticed that a lot of people under-rate UCF because they simply do not know about the outstanding accomplishments which this institution has made. I have been reading a lot of posts about UCF lately and I'm really surprised about how much people are in the dark about the school's astounding achievements, so I thought its time to start a thread dedicated to bringing them out for everyone to see. I would really appreciate it if this post doesn't end up in a rival debate between UCF and 'x' college or 'y' college. This thread is dedicated to UCF alone and bringing out its extraordinary beauty as an institution. I'm referring not only to rankings, but also to fun stuff, parties, Frats, athletics, patents and inventions.
You may have come across some of these data before in different places, I am simply attempting to bring them together into one post/thread. So in a sense, its nothing new.
Please correct me if I provide any information here that is incorrect.
UCF was ranked 3rd in the nation's 2010 patent rankings, (7th in 2009).
UCF's Optics program is ranked in the top 10 by the National Research Council (NRC)
UCF's physics specialization for Molecular/Atomic/Optical Physics was ranked 13th by the USNWR. also #26 Criminology, #46 Healthcare Management, #70 Engineering, and so on.
UCF made it on the top 10 playboy rankings for party schools. (exciting ...)</p>

<p>UCF students and researchers are working with NASA, to improve the quality of its missions
A UCF doctoral student was the first to develop a mobile physiology app, the first of its kind in a series of others that would benefit medical students across the nation.</p>

<p>And as you all know, UCF's the Second largest University in the United States, located in 'Orlando' the happiest place on Earth. Lots of parties, frats, intellectuals, bright people, parties ...</p>

<p>Just keep it coming, I don't know a lot about Frat stuff, athletics, and all that. I would really appreciate posts about Our Honors College, UCF Athletics, Frats, popular student clubs, bars, and happening places. I would also appreciate posts about UCF Researchers, say .. "UCF Researcher discovered 'this' and 'that', invented 'this' and 'that'".

I consider a school having a solid party scene to be a superb accomplishment as well, I'm an extreme fan of 'Great Intellectual stuff', 'Great Party Scene', to me finding that at UCF makes it the very best... Picture working at a state of the art laboratory all day and in the evening, relaxing at a state of the art college bar, with state of the art drinks, people with state of the art minds, having state of the art fun.</p>

<p>Just popping this one in here because it’s relevant to me: Ranked number 2 in the nation by the Princeton Review for it’s Video Game design degrees, with alumni and current students working on, or having worked on, games for all current systems, including Dead Space 2, Golden Eye, Kinect Adventures, ALL of the EA Games Sports games [the Madden and NCAA football series’, NHL/NBA/Fifa Soccer, etc.], Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare2, World At War, and a ton more.</p>

<p>The VidjaGamers of UCF have also made incredible strides in education by developing the Conspiracy Code games for Florida Virtual School, the first classes immersed fully inside of a video game, which has increased students testing scores, especially for reading.</p>

<p>They’ve also got maaanny more games in the works, as well as many older, already released games. Basically: 2 legit.</p>

This is really good to know, a State of the Art Game Design Facility, and all these games you mentioned are like known across the nation, some across the world.

<p>Let’s not forget the UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Managmenet, ranked #3 in the nation for Hospitality Management being in the center of the Hospitality world, Orlando, FL. It is not on the main campus, but just about 30 minutes away right next to the convention center and is partners with Universal Studios, Disney, and many other credible hotels, resturants, theme parks, etc. The best of the best for hands on expierence and the rosen campus is unique, innovative, and unlike any other!</p>

<p>I hate how people discredit UCF. I live in the Central Florida area and I am going to be a Senior this year and I hear all the time “I am applying to UCF, FSU, and UF. If I don’t get accepted into FSU/UF, then UCF is just my back up…”. makes me so angryyy!!</p>

<p>But it’s true though, a LOT of ppl use UCF as their back up because they do accept a lot more applicants than UF or FSU. On top of that, UCF hasn’t gotten to that level of prestige like UF or FSU which has an impact on where ppl apply to and what they think of a school when applying</p>

<p>According to Wiki (not a reliable source but it lists reliable sources.) for first time students in college in 2010 UF accepted 41.9% of applicants, UCF accepted 42.24% of applicants and FSU accepted 57.4% of applicants.<br>
Why is it that UF people that come on here seem to have an superiority complex? -,-</p>

<p>1) Wikipedia is SOOOOO reliable right, FIU the hardest school to get in? 0_o
2) We’re only talking about undergraduate admissions, transfers are another story
3) Information here is slightly outdate, from what I gathered UCF accepted about 55% of their applicants and UF accepts about like 40% or so this year (roughly estimated)</p>

<p>But anyway, you can’t change the fact the most people just see UCF as a back up anyway. In time, i’m sure it will grow and get the prestige everyone here says it will. But for now, it’s still up and coming and (for the most part) many kids prefer to go to an established school, not one that is getting to that level yet. UCF is a nice school in a fantastic area with many amenities, but in terms of education and history, it’s still growing. Give it about 10 years, and then we’ll see how UCF is doing, hopefully well :)</p>

<p>If you would actually read what I post maybe you will see that wikipedia gives reliable sources. But I guess I’ll just have to go through the trouble and post them myself. These are undergraduate admissions.</p>

<p>I don’t feel like posting about FSU’s stats because they are way higher and I don’t feel it necessary. I’m not trying to argue btw, just trying to show you that what you were saying isn’t fact. Kids at my school and according to teachers, UCF is not relayed as a back up school. This is a thread to show UCFs accomplishments thus far, not to keep telling people that it is still up and coming and showing that your chosen school is far better and will be for years. :P</p>

<p>Depends on your area and those around you I guess. Here in South Florida, everyone sees UF as the best school in FL (next to UM and FSU) while they see UCF as just a back up with not much to offer now. But, judging from all these accomplishments here, UCF sounds like a great school, I was actually considering it when I applied.</p>

<p>But, UF was the better option for what I am gonna study. There are some things UCF is great at (refer to the list above) and there are some things UF is good at too. It all depends on you and what you’re majoring in. From a general perspective…that’s a whole different subject entirely lol</p>

<p>I’m on the west coast, so who knows, lol. I think the general consensus over here had always been UF, FSU then USF (Miami wasn’t really talked about because it’s a private school). Only in the last 2 years when I actually started looking at colleges had I heard UCF on par with UF and being better than FSU. But yes, it also depends on your field, like engineering for example (OT but went to orientation and about half the people wanted to do engineering LOL it was craziness).

<p>lol it was also weird because almost everyone I talked to was from Miami. Besides a girl that was from Pensacola and one that was from Chicago…
But yes, not quite on par in my own opinion but it’s definitely climbing. UF has what…? about 100 years up on UCF? ;P</p>

<p>Yes, I thought I made is clear in my starting post that this forum was dedicated to “bringing out the extraordinary beauty of UCF as an institution” and not some useless debate for ■■■■■■ like ‘JKidrauhl’ I’d like to politely ask you to leave this thread, it is not the place for you. Please don’t make me say more than that.</p>

<p>What I’ve realized is that most of the people who talk like this haven’t even been to Orlando before, their opinions have been formed mostly on ‘stray knowledge’. And what you’d find is that when they eventually visit UCF, they’re amazed at how shallow their perceptions of the school have been. Then they end up becoming fans. UCF is a treasure, people who discover it early enough are exceedingly happy! You see newer inventions and patents coming from UCF students, researchers, and faculty everyday. The school has risen so fast and already gained national recognition in many fields. Look at the games mentioned earlier on in this thread, or go to ‘<a href=“http://www.fiea.ucf.edu/joomla/index.php/why-fiea/graduate-games”>http://www.fiea.ucf.edu/joomla/index.php/why-fiea/graduate-games&lt;/a&gt;’ for a full list, and tell me what you think. </p>

<p>And besides their academic prowess, there’s a socially active atmosphere that leads to that balance between a deep intellectual setting and a strong party scene. Plus you have Orlando here, the Central Florida Technology corridor is around the corner and the industry has a strong interface with UCF. Micro-Electronics Companies from across the nation, many of which have branches across the world, are here too in search of UCF graduates particularly because UCF has made a name in the area of Optics, Lasers, and Physical electronics. Earlier this year, I met a professor in Texas (teaching in the UT System) who told me that if he had his way, he’d give up a great deal to be a faculty at UCF, now this guy has been around the semiconductor industry for a while (abt 27 years), and a Senior Member of the IEEE (Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers). He told me that UCF was a World Class research Institution in this field and a pace setter in Florida, it simply stood out among all the colleges in the state for this, and this was well known among his industrial peers.</p>

<p>The list goes on … I’d like to invite UCF students, aspiring students, and parents to go ahead and post some more cool stuff about UCF. I can’t do all the posting, and leaving this thread idle makes ■■■■■■ like “” feel they are invited to post anything they like.</p>

<p>I just wanted to shed some more light about acceptance rates. UCF is actually becoming a lot harder to get into, not only because of it’s size, but because of the aptitude of the students coming in. I just went to the first day of Orientation and I met a bunch of other kids doing summer. I was surprised by the number of student’s whose GPA fell between 3.8-4.3. I know that UF is known to be the to school in Florida but UCF is closing in.</p>

<p>And I also dare say that UCF is better than FSU. FSU accepted a lot more students than UCF This year. Florida’s top public schools were UF and FSU but I think it’s starting to become UCF and UF, in my personal opinion.</p>

<p>And yes, I chose to go to UCF as a Digital Media major because of it’s awesome Game Design program :P</p>

<p>Really? What makes you say that? I thought FSU as somewhat equal to UF in terms of academics, enrollment, etc. That is a major upset on FSU’s part, being a wrong so long. I actually heard quite the opposite, FSU actually lowered admissions this year, while UCF raised them. </p>

<p>FSU was very easy to get into this year. My son is a transfer student from Santa Fe College. All his friends got accepted but few were accepted to UCF. As long as you had the application in early you were in. But as you can see from other forums there are so many students with HIGH GPA’s that were wishing they would have been accepted to UCF. It is getting harder your grades have to be high.
Personally my son hated Gainesville. UF was taking their time with the applications and he made the decision for them. UCF is going up fast. It has not been around a long time and has made so many achievements. They are now going to open the College of Dentistry. My son is going for Physical Therapy route. He wanted to go to UCF when he was in high school and friends talked the UF speech to him and therefore went to SFC. FSU and UCF accepted him immediately and the next day he said UCF.
You have to go where you feel you fit in and I am proud to say I am a UCF MOM.</p>

<p>JKidrauhl, I don’t know were you heard that FSU took less students than UCF but UCF definitely declined more people than FSU this year.</p>

<p>I agree with dorstoy, many kids with high GPAs had trouble getting in. I had a 4.2 GPA and it was hard for me to get into the Fall term.</p>
