UCHA - Too Early To Apply

Has anybody applied for the UCHA CO-OP yet? It seems really early to apply, but it doesn't say anything about not being able to apply this early. I am actually planning on going to SMC next year and to transfer to UCLA after 2 years, but since the CO-OPs are essentially on UCLA campus, I figured I would ask here.

It sounds like an amazing deal, housing in Santa Monica is a rip and since SMC doesn't have any housing, this seems like the way to go.

it may be cheap, and fun, and all that, but after a year there, two of my current apartmentmates were quite ready to leave. they made a lot of friends, however (many international).

also, applying early doesn't seem to be too necessary. they ended up in the coop AFTER deciding to abandon their planned living situations in order to be able to live with each other... so, late spring of the year before they lived in the coop.

santa monica may be a rip, but there are cheaper apartments to be had, the further you live from the campus (ie south of wilshire). you have plenty of time to find a good deal, so keep an eye out.

I called them and they said that it was never too early to apply, but that once you are accepted, you have to pay the $600 nonrefundable reservation fee, so you shouldn't apply until you're pretty sure what you're going to do.

I sent in the application, it costs only $35 to apply, and I will think about it more once I actually receive a decision. I'm definitely leaning towards it.

I know it isn't an ideal living situation, but there's not much that's affordable for me around there. It is already located around 6 miles from the SMC campus, and I really don't want to go much further than that. I'm not going to know anybody down there (I'm from NorCal) so I don't have the luxury of a roommate to cut costs unless I find some random person on Craigslist.

Any reason in particular that they wanted to move out? At least you pay by quarter and there is no commitment beyond each quarter, so if it is that bad or you find something else that's better, you can move out without a 9 or 12 month lease.

i think just that a year there was... enough. but maybe you'll meet someone to room with the next year, outside the coop. or meet someone at SMC...?

Got accepted to summer session 2 2009 today! Originally was waitlisted for fall, ask to change to summer and got in, so that may be a good idea for someone who wants to get in.

Be careful of bedbugs in the co-op. The rooms I've lived in were infested when I got there, and it's spreading throughout the buildings as people move from room to room. They're really difficult to get rid of, too.

Personally I hate living there, but I'm not sure what else I could afford within commuting distance.

are you serious? bedbugs?

i might have to live there next year, because of housing costs D<
