i'm not sure if chicago would be my top choice, but i liked chicago's app the best and feel like i was able to represent myself the best on this app. does anyone think the application is indicative of the classes/environment there? i've heard so many negative things about chicago lately that i've sort of been scared away, even though i applied early and put much much time into the app.

Celticsfan, out of curiosity, what have you been hearing?? I can't say I have heard too many negative things about UChi, with exception to its location.

Other than the obviously shafty financial aid, I rarely hear any legitimate negativity about Chicago.

Are you kidding? Everyone tells me they work you to death there.

What's wrong with being worked to death(although that is an exaggeration)?

I think it would be an amazing opportunity to study at the most academically rigorous institution in the nation. Not everyone likes the idea of a university that hands out A's for minimal effort; I'm more interested in the knowledge I could potentially gain there than the grades or prestige. I don't expect everyone to be so idealistic though...

Yeah, definitely stone, it's kind of hollow right now because there's a good amount of work at my current school, but I'm not learning anything. Sometimes I just felt like I was sitting in class to get a degree. There's no point to that in my mind.

Looking at other people's stats in CC is never good for your ego.

Current Institution: UC San Diego Current Major: Mathematics/ Economics double major

Applying for: Applied Math and maybe a minor in econ or physics

HS GPA: UW:3.72 W: 4.1-4.3 (no clue) ACT: 32 Predicted Fall Quarter GPA: 3.75-4.0 (16 units) College EC: not much. I just write Japanese short stories and haiku for fun.

Rec: ummm...too soon to make any speculation.

Does anyone know if colleges look down on a recommendation with bad grammar? I'm probably going to ask one from my Math professors but he doesn't really speak English.

Oh and good Luck to everyone else.
I don't know any math professors at UCSD who aren't fluent in English.

Haha.... do you go to UCSD?

Does anyone know anything about Chicago's credit policy?

If, in the off chance I even get accepted, they refuse to award credit for my intro courses, I don't think I'll be able to go.

So my dad called today just to see if they had all the materials, they told him that decisions are coming out at the end of the month. Hmmm...may be they're just a little more overwhelmed than they usually are? The date of response listed is April 21st...

the decision is coming out ???? early one and regular one at the same time?

um no why would they would be at the SAME TIME?

what? the decisions are coming out at the end of the month????? are u sure about that? what kind of transfer application are you applying to? early or regular? early one should come out around these days....

so the regular will be in the may??

I applied Early Alternative. So the Early Alternatives are coming out late April. Keep in mind that they probably just got to reading them in the last week. I bet they got more applications this year (lower acceptance rate too) than years past.

Here's a question some of you guys might be able to answer: On the UChicago transfer admissions website, it says that admission as a transfer is neither harder nor easier than freshman admission. If that were true, I think most of us would be sitting pretty (freshman last year was above 30%). But when you look at their transfer rate last year, it was alarmingly low (below 15%). Now, is that because the transfer pool last year was filled with unqualifieds? Or was it because they really do have higher standards for transfers?

Wait, did Chicago really admit only 11% of applicants last year? I have no idea how I got in then, all of your stats destroy mine...I wish I could have gone but I could not turn down ND. UChicago is a great place, I was there once this year and I felt like I wish I would have gone, but unfortunately its impossible to go to 2 schools at once

ckmets13, would you mind posting some of your stats? Those two schools are currently my two top choices and I'm hoping to get into just one of them.

"Haha.... do you go to UCSD?"
Usually having to publish numerous papers in English implies some knowledge of the language. I'm not quite sure about the applied department, although they'd have to have similar qualifications. Honestly, I'd want my analysis/algebra professor's recommendation over a statistics class or mathematical programming class or whatever, but that's just me.

somehow I have hard time believing what Sachmoney is saying. Why would someone in admissions casually tell your dad that decisions are going to be over a week late when he just called to check on your application.

It seems strange that they would let out this information so easily over the phone and yet not post it on the blog or anything. Don't you think it's more likely he/she got confused and thought you were talking about RN?

No, I believe sachmoney. If you search the previous years' threads, you'll notice that the admissions office frequently gives that sort of info over the phone. They even released decisions upon inquiry.
