Reflection
Strengths: ACT score, essays
Weaknesses: Midyear report/junior year grades, not a lot of leadership, and part of a difficult demographic
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Check the weaknesses
Where else you are applying or have already applied: Accepted: Rutgers NB Honors College, UMich
Waitlisted: BC, UChicago Rejected: Northwestern, waiting on 4 Ivies, UVA, Villanova, Georgetown, and Duke
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Well, it’s an insane school so I didn’t expect to get in and I wouldn’t have gone even if I did. But the way the first admissions week has gone for me, I’m not expecting a positive result anywhere else. Congrats to those who got in!

[ b]Decision: Accepted **

Objective:
SAT I and/or ACT (breakdown): 2330 (730 M, 800 CR, 800 W)
SAT II (place score in parentheses): 800 Math 2, 800 Physics, 800 Chemistry

Summer Activities: Paid student researcher
Essays: Common App (6/10), Extended Essay (8/10), Optional Essay (6/10) - These were really rushed and I only had time to elaborate on one or two of my favorite things in each category.
Teacher Recommendations: English (9/10), Computer Science (8/10) - Never read these, but they were probably great.
Counselor Rec: 7/10 - Positive (could not read it), but he had to write recommendations for many students.
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: 6/10 - The interview was about an hour long. Nothing really stood out from the interview, and we didn’t really “connect.” He was interested in a few of my extracurricular activities and probably wrote a positive report, but it wasn’t incredible.

Other
Applied for Financial Aid? No
Projected Concentration: Mathematics
State/Country: NJ
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: F
Income Bracket: $150k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None

Reflection
Strengths: My UChicago essay
Weaknesses: My extracurriculars were mostly science/math related but I didn’t have any major awards in that area (ISEF, Siemens, etc.).
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Essays
Where else you are applying or have already applied: MIT (Rejected), Harvey Mudd (Waitlisted)
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Take the risk for the UChicago essay! They are definitely the type of school to appreciate something unusual, but also remember the essay should stay true to yourself. Although I wish I had more time to edit my essay, my voice definitely came across very strongly, which helped my application.

Objective:
SAT I and/or ACT (breakdown):2370 (missed a single math question because I can’t multiply two numbers together with a calculator OTL)
SAT II (place score in parentheses): Math II (800), Physics (800), Chemistry (800), World History (800)

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Robotics (Captain/President/Baby-sitter), Oil Painting, Classical Vocal, Chinese Folk Dance
Job/Work Experience: Tutor at Kumon
Volunteer/Community Service: Tutoring (but honestly not much)
Summer Activities: Garcia MRSEC Summer Research Program, UCLA HSSRP, Anime Expo (XDD)
Essays:
[] Common App Main: A pretty normal essay overall; I talked about robotics and how I set up the team and tried to lead it to victory despite a heavy lack of funding.
[
] Extended essay (which topic): “I am I and…”; I filled the blank in with “my poi” and then talked about my poi dancing
[] Optional Essay: I simply listed a bunch of things I liked. It started off normal enough, books, authors, then soon dropped into the deep end with favorite mangakas (Togashi!!) and poses…
[
] Why Chicago: A pretty free-written response…I kinda just “splurged” on this one and ranted on for 2 pages ^^”
[li] Other: I attached another essay which I had also written for the Chicago prompt because I couldn’t decide between the two. I wrote on Hatsune Miku… (link for those who do not know her: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqJgwYSh4Co )[/li]
Teacher Recommendations: Pretty strong; my teachers are rather familiar with me (and unfortunately with my napping habits as well…)
Counselor Rec: Probably great! My counselor and I are on great terms!
Additional Rec: I sent one from my research mentor at the Garcia program.
Interview: 10/10!! It was the best college interview I’ve ever had! The interviewer and I met in a “hole-in-the-wall” sort of place. We ended up debating as to whether engineering had any relations to art and whether a machine can be seen to have a soul. Then the interviewer started ranting jokingly about Chicago weather and how you really “have to be crazy to go to that god forsaken place!”

Other
Applied for Financial Aid? Yes
Projected Concentration: Physics
State/Country: CA
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: Mid-level
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Nothing other than my hobby of climbing into cardboard boxes?

Reflection
Strengths: Some really weird tidbits in my essays? I also had a really good interview.
Weaknesses: My academic profile overall does not seem to be the most prominent
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Essays and interview
Where else you are applying or have already applied: Accepted to UCSD, UCLA, UCB, USC (Trustee), Johns Hopkins, Caltech, Vanderbilt, Columbia (Likely); Rejected from MIT, Waiting for: Rest of Ivies, Stanford
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I think it’s really important to understand UChicago. It is sort of detached school all the way up there in the north and I think much of the time, many people don’t a full understanding of the school and its values—I know that I certainly didn’t at the onset and I know that people in my area often have misconceptions regarding the school as a dreary place where one throws oneself into Lake Michigan after suffering under the torture of books and bad weather. Youtube is definitely your friend here! Also, I think it’s important to truly be genuine on your essays and write about things you like, however ‘out there’ they may seem. UChicago, more than any of the other schools, seem to really value authenticity and a willingness to confidently project yourself and your own character.

Teacher Recommendations: Didn’t read, but I assume they are good.
Counselor Rec: See above.
Additional Rec: Sent a letter from a former internship supervisor who attended UChicago AFTER being deferred. Clearly 10/10, because I got in…
Interview: EXCELLENT, with a foreign service officer. We talked about South Sudanese foreign policy for a good half an hour!

Income Bracket: >200,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None

Reflection

Where else you are applying or have already applied: Accepted to UC—Berkeley, UVa, UMichigan. Rejected by Stanford. Still waiting on the Ivies.
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Don’t be depressed, future deferred applicants! Think of being deferred as another chance at being accepted—I am living proof that it is possible. Also, send another letter of recommendation from someone who went there to sway the AdComs.

Also waitlisted: Stanford,
Rejected: MIT (I cry)
Waiting on: Harvard, Yale, Princeton (deferred EA), UPenn, Dartmouth

General Comments: Well its been a long ride and I’m extremely lucky to be in such a good position. I’ll refrain from being all sentimental and stuff, but for future applicants I would recommend developing a spike (focus alot on something), like I did with physics. I think that was the reason I wasn’t flat-out rejected and this way, its easier for you to stand out.

Cheers and good luck to everyone!!!

S was waitlisted. 2230 SAT, (800,650,780) and 3.94 unweighted GPA. From Silicon Valley area California. Home educated, white, middle class, strong music EC’s, strong computer science EC’s, volunteer hours, state spelling bee champion, high rank on CMU high school hacking competition. 4 outstanding LOR’s, great essays, interview with UChicago went fantastic, A’s in dual enrollment classes at community college. Weaknesses: turned application in late, low SATII subject tests (having hand scored for error, but results not back in time.) Hoping he somehow gets off the waitlist as UChicago is his first choice and best fit. Good luck to everyone else, too.

Been conflicted over whether to post this before or after the final decision (or at all), but I suppose it can’t really hurt. I’m also applying in the middle of compulsory military service so my final year of school was 2014 and I’m applying for the class of 2021.

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2240: 800R, 740M, 700W (Screwed up the essay due to time and lack of ideas for examples)

[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): N/A
[
] Weighted GPA: N/A

[
] AP (place score in parentheses): N/A
[] IB (place score in parentheses): 44 (Double As for TOK/EE, lost my point in LangLit SL)
[
] Senior Year Course Load: IB Package: Biology, Chemistry, and History HL. LangLit, Maths, and Mandarin B SL. EE in Biology.
[] Number of other RD applicants in your school: There probably are a few but I don’t know any
[
] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Putting most of these under extracurriculars section.[/ul]

Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses. Putting awards here because it’s more convenient): St John Ambulance Brigade (2009-2014, CSM (Head) in 2012), First Aid Competition (2009-2014, National 3rd in 2011, 2nd in 2012, continued to train competition teams thereafter), Choir (2009-2012, SYF Gold in 2009, 2011), Young Diplomat’s Society (Model UN group. One best del), A few others including Church involvement, unofficial Philosophy club, online Neuroscience Courses
[
] Job/Work Experience: Mentioned interning at a law firm but that was short and minor
[li] Volunteer/Community service: Nothing outside school programmes[/ul] [/li]
Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):
[li] Common App Main: 8/10 (An incident that involved me talking to the principal. Won’t share publicly online)[/li][
] Extended essay(which topic): ???/10 (The Borges prompt. A very weird and crazy conversation between two sides of my personality. Entertaining but very raw since it was assembled last minute though it had ideas that were stewing for months)
[] Optional Essay: 8/10 (Wrote about Aeon Magazine)
[
] Why Chicago: 9+/10 (Very unique concept. Includes my love of brains (in interest and taste), comparing myself to a zombie, bringing up the concept of p-zombies, inventing a concept called a q-zombie which eats minds, and then referencing a lot of things about UChicago. Personally loved this essay though the writing could be better on a technical level. I may post it after final decisions are out.)
[/ul]
[] Teacher Recommendation #1: Chemistry Teacher, 7-8/10?
[
] Teacher Recommendation #2: History Teacher, 8-9//10? (I think my personality shone through this class)
[] Counselor Rec: My SJAB teacher, because our school doesn’t have the counsellor write our recs, 6-8/10 (He doesn’t really know the other side of me.)
[
] Additional Rec: N/A
[] Interview: Did not request and regretting it now. May try to pull off some stunts.
[
] Art Supplement: N/A
Other[ul]
[] Intended major: Biological Sciences (Neuroscience) + Philosophy
[
] Date Submitted App: 1 Jan, minutes before the deadline
[] State (if domestic applicant): N/A
[
] Country (if international applicant): Singapore
[] School Type: “Independent” (Semi-private)
[
] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: M
[
] Income Bracket: High
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None, negative hook of being Asian and my country being very competitive[/ul][/li]
Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Why UChicago essay, All my essays except Common app actually mentioned UChicago, Good and consistent academic results, earlier ECs
[
] Weaknesses: ECs in the last two years were weaker, UChicago supplement is a very unpredictable factor
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Essays got their attention and showed fit, but my application may not have stood out in other areas (also the main supplement being a little overboard)
[
] What would you have done differently?: Definitely write my essays earlier (The supplement is even “self-aware” about this point), modify quite a few remarks in the supplement, and maybe request for an interview.
[li] Where else were you accepted/rejected/waitlisted?: Accepted by WashU, Rejected by JHU and Duke[/li][/ul]

Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: UChicago has been my dream school since I discovered in it two years ago. Sure it doesn’t have standalone undergrad neuroscience and the weather is freezing but everything that I’ve read about the school culture and community makes me feel that this is the kind of place I would thrive in and love. While I’m glad they thought I was suitable enough to waitlist me the low admission rate off the waitlist and my lack of clear hooks/roles to fill makes me worried (I also wonder how they treat waitlisted students not enrolling in the coming year). Still, I’m not going to give up this last glimmer of hope. Not until all the waitlist decisions are finalised. To all my fellow waitlistees, you may be my competitors, but (just as UChicago students treat the Core and brutal academics) you share my struggles. Don’t give up hope yet. It’s not over till the class is announced

Decision: Waitlisted

Maybe a lack of self-confidence was the issue.

Essays
Common App Main: 10/10
Extended essay (If you could balance on a tightrope, over what landscape would you walk?): 10/10
Optional Essay: 6.5/10
Why Chicago: 8.5/10
Teacher Recommendation #1: didn’t read it, but I did very well in the class and I have a very good relationship with this teacher.
Teacher Recommendation #2: same as previous
Counselor Rec: average, we didn’t become close until 2nd semester
Additional Rec: none
Interview: should’ve done one but didn’t
Art Supplement: could’ve sent one in, but I didn’t bother to
Date Submitted App: EA
State (if domestic applicant): Georgia
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: African American
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: ~150,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Idk, Nigerian? Still powered through HS with a mental disorder and being hospitalized a few times?
Strengths: ECs? I know for sure my essays (beside the optional one) were extremely well written and I had them reviewed by not only peers but my AP Lit and AP Lang teacher and they told me they were amazing.
Weaknesses: SAT and ACT (most definitely SAT II, I shouldn’t even have sent those in), AP Test Scores
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: SAT & ACT low, didn’t bother sending the email of my continued interest, didn’t bother to set up an interview.
What would you have done differently?: Studied for the SAT and ACT, took advantage of the interview, got to know my counselor better earlier to ensure a great recommendation.
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: A tad baffled at the fact that some with lower test scores, lower GPAs, and all around not as strong application at least got waitlisted, but hey, everything happens for a reason.

Decision: Accepted

[
] AP (place score in parentheses): Not offered
[] IB (place score in parentheses): Not offered
[
] Senior Year Course Load: I go to a French school so I have 12 courses year-round.
[] Number of other RD applicants in your school: 0
[
] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):[/ul] Subjective:[ul] Multiple regional and national Mathematics medals, plus extremely high distinctions for general national exams.
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Student government (President), class delegate, Relay for Life, Mathematics Club (President), Golf, Youth Parliament (Secretary - Economics Committee), Soccer (really, football…)(Captain)
[
] Job/Work Experience: two internships at major telecom companies.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Relay for Life (twice), Amnesty International, Red Cross, local elections committee volunteer (4 weeks, 20h a week).[/ul]
Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[
] Essays (Include Subjects):
[] Common App Main: 7/10, talked about how I was someone who had very strict moral bearings and a very good work ethic. Nothing much, especially compared to my other essays.
[
] Extended essay(which topic): 10/10. Did the living with paradoxes ones, absolutely nailed it. Really, one of my best pieces of writing ever, hands down.
[] Optional Essay: 9/10. Chose topics which really reflected my fields of interest (Economics and Politics). Very straight to the point.
[
] Why Chicago: 9/10. Talked about how being brought up in an era of instability spurred my passion for Economics. Mentioned my close inclinations to classical liberalism and the Chicago School of Economics. Touched upon the IOP and the Big Problems course series, which are both very relevant to my undergraduate vision.
[] Teacher Recommendation #1: 10/10. By my Mathematics teacher. She really wrote something great, mentioned how I stood out among the thousands of students she’s had over the past few decades.
[
] Teacher Recommendation #2: 9/10. By my History teacher. Pretty generic, but a good kind of generic. Really hit the nail where he had to when it came to showing how involved I was in public service.
[] Counselor Rec: 10/10. Terrific, which in no small part comes from the fact I was the only qualified US-bound applicant from my school in years.
[
] Additional Rec: One, from the head organizer I worked with for the elections. 9/10. Pretty good in terms of content, but because of who penned it and what it touched upon, it really added depth to my application.
[] Interview: None, even though I applied for one. To any new prospective applicant reading this, don’t worry if you don’t get an interview ! Sometimes there just aren’t any available alumni nearby.
[
] Country (if international applicant): Tiny European country.
[] School Type: French curriculum school.
[
] Ethnicity: White (cruising around the Aegean Sea since 200 BC)
[] Gender: M
[
] Income Bracket: >200,000$
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Applicant from small nation ? Or maybe being an international applicant balances things out ? In all honesty, I think the benefits and drawbacks of things I don’t have control over (ethnicity, nationality, social status…) pretty much even out. [/ul][/li]
Reflection
[] Strengths: Grades (I know the converted GPA is 4.0, but the raw grades are really something worth considering), essays (especially the Extended Essay - be creative and go wild !), extracurriculars that match my interests.
[
] Weaknesses: None, there’s really nothing in my application that’s negative. Maybe applying from a tiny country where there isn’t a lot of interest from American universities might be a drawback, but that’s pretty much it.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Well-rounded student, great essays, but I think most importantly I’m somehow who fits into UChicago. I recommend you go ahead and read up the other threads if you don’t know what UChicago feels like. It’s an extremely cerebral environment, one which values hark work much more than the Ivies and Stanford and is on par with MIT when it comes to valuing work over prestige. A quick look at the number of Nobel prize winners from Chicago (around 90, depending on how you count) shows how huge Chicago’s impact in academia is, especially when compared to its relative lack of spotlight in popular culture. Chicago is a place where the hard-working intellectual thrives, and only a certain type of person thrives in a place where “fun comes to die” (hopefully not too soon, though !).
