UChicago Accepted Class of 2022

^^ Maybe he chose to apply ED because UChicago is his #1. Weird - I know. This isn’t going to sit well with some on that other thread :))

@HydeSnark does anyone have an actual source for this info?

He is part of the UChicago Class of '22 Facebook group. Or at least there is a member of the group that is from Bellevue, Washington that has that name.

There are only two possible sources, the applicant and his immediate family, or the admissions office. Most likely, neither would confirm this but it’s more likely the source would be in the admissions office.

@milee30 and @JBStillFlying I’m on the other thread and it sits pretty good with me.

I’m quite sure the student would discuss this with his peers/friends which is what was posted on another site. After all he is just a “regular student” with fascinating pedigree of course.

I guess the source was the student himself then.

What relationship does this have with the other thread? It’s kind of a unique situation, and we have no idea of the family dynamics involved, or even what kind of student he is. Given that as a practical matter he could choose which college he wanted to attend, without worrying about whether he would be admitted or what it cost, it’s not a big surprise that he applied someplace early and stopped there. It would have been asinine to apply to 9 or 10 colleges and to be coy about where he would enroll.

He sure doesn’t need to rely on college to network his way into the working world, or depend on the prestige of his degree to get employers to look at him. So he shouldn’t care about any of the things some of you think all HYPS applicants care about, and that differentiate HYPS from Chicago in many peoples’ minds. And maybe he’s not that into engineering or organized extracurriculars, and doesn’t intend to spend four years in a dorm room. If you take that stuff off the table, why wouldn’t he opt for Chicago?

On the other hand, everyone else in his family has gone to a top-shelf, prestige private university, and that’s exactly what he’s doing, too, even though he ought to be more or less immune to prestige considerations.

“Given that as a practical matter he could choose which college he wanted to attend, without worrying about whether he would be admitted or what it cost, it’s not a big surprise that he applied someplace early and stopped there.”

  • Sure, but most who are that confident tend to apply EA, not ED.

“It would have been asinine to apply to 9 or 10 colleges and to be coy about where he would enroll.”

  • Most children of the prestigious don't make any announcements till May 1 - and the Gates PR apparatus certainly hasn't made any announcements. Nor did they with their oldest (IIRC). In reality stuff like where did they apply can only be gleaned from where they were accepted (if such info. is released - which it tends not to be). People get the rumor-mill going via college visits, UChicago and Vandy, in this case (maybe more) or FB pages and so forth.

“What relationship does this have with the other thread? It’s kind of a unique situation, and we have no idea of the family dynamics involved, or even what kind of student he is.”

  • it's one data point but not unique. Scions of the prestigious go to the top colleges all the time but UChicago tends not to be included in that list. So it's interesting and, perhaps, some evidence that someone who probablyhad a choice opted hands down for UChicago, signalling it with ED (not EA).

I attended with my son admitted students on February 3 in NYC and director of admissions Nondorf said that they have around 13 thousands applications for ED and EA and they admitted less than %10 and he said if you see a friend who applied RD give them a hug. He mentioned my son High school that more than 300 applie this year a double from last year. So is getting harder and harder to get to uchicago.

@phenix2022 We were at the admitted students day too, he mentioned 346 applications! I guess our sons go to the same hs.

That’s the same number of early apps as last year. Did they happen to say how many they admitted ED vs. EA?

there was not breakdown of ed and ea, just 10% for both combined, 13,000 ea/ed and 32,000 all together.

Hello, everyone and congrats to all!

My son is an ED2 hopeful, and while we wait for decisions (not too long now!) I was wondering if I could ask a few questions of those of you who already have acceptances in hand.

  1. I asked this on another thread and think I have it correct, but just checking: housing choice is granted in order of paid deposit, but selections are not made until later on? Or should he have his actual preferences ready to go by decision day?

  2. Are there “revisit days” for accepted students this spring? If so, can anyone share that info?

  3. How long after your acceptance did you wait to receive your FA letter, and was it available first through the portal, or emailed, or sent snail mail?

  4. A question about EFC - @JBStillFlying, on another thread I saw you mention that Chicago comes up with “their own version” of the EFC. Can you elaborate? Do they tend to be more/less generous than the FAFSA EFC number? Can you point me to any discussion about this?

  5. Finally, what did it look like when you logged into the portal on the decision date? Was it just the “Status Update” with a link to your letter?

Thanks in advance for the info. Knowing some of these things in advance helps ease the stress while waiting!

@booklady123 look at my post #66 , there is 2 overnights stay events for admitted students in April . I don’t have exact date in my head now but both Thursday and Friday.

  1. Yes paid deposit sets your name in the list, and you can change your choice up to sometime in June with no effect on your position

  2. Accepted student days happen in April

  3. about a week on the portal

  4. Mine was comparable to the FAFSA EFC.

  5. Yes

Our expected contribution came out similar to what FAFSA said, as well. I think the reason UChicago computes its own rather than relying on the FAFSA EFC is that the former is really just for the distriubtion of Federal Funds, not institutional funds. If a school includes certain assets which FAFSA doesn’t, assumes a different draw-down rate or nets out other expenses like college tuition for sibs, there may well be a different expected contribution number on the bottom line. Ours turned out about the same as the FAFSA EFC as well for this year, and better than the online NPC (which is probably going a higher-end estimate simply because schools are required by DOE to make that # available to everyone  ).

UChicago should get the FA package to the EDII accepteds fairly quickly so that you have time to review. If it’s too high, you can always go back and discuss or appeal, is my understanding.

Placement in the housing queue was determined last year by enrollment date. You have until sometime in early June to solidify your preferences (date will be made available). You can visit or revisit and change things around as you please till that date. Plenty of time to explore housing.

“5) Finally, what did it look like when you logged into the portal on the decision date? Was it just the “Status Update” with a link to your letter?”

Watch the CC thread and when you get about a million notifications that’s when it’s time to check the status. IIRC you login and you’ll see you have a communication. You cross your fingers, say a quick prayer, and click on the link.

Thank you all so much! This was very helpful. Sorry I missed those earlier replies to my questions. Have only been popping in intermittently. Best wishes to all.

Specific dates for accepted student overnights are April 5-6 and April 12-13.

Best of luck to your son! When do they release ED2?
