So I just got into uchicago and was wondering how its econ dept is. I know that some poster rated it among the top programs in the nation (among the likes of HYPS), but does anyone have any statistics so far as uchicago kids getting jobs on wallstreet or otherwise?

Use the search function – this is something that gets discussed (and discussed and discussed) on a regular basis.

As far as I can tell, the short answer would be that Chicago is a recruiting stop for all or almost all the major investment banks and other financial institutions, and for hedge funds. Chicago’s excellent math department is as big a draw as its economics in this regard (and lots of students who want financial/investment industry careers combine the two). Recruiting at Chicago is probably not as strong as at most (not all) of the Ivies or Stanford and a few other places, but is as strong or stronger than anyplace else. Students with good records and this particular ambition definitely get hired. I think you will have trouble finding statistics, though.

And, yes, Chicago’s Economics Department is world-famous. It may not be better than Harvard’s or Princeton’s, but I don’t think anyone would concede that it’s inferior to them in any way. USNWR has it in a four-way tie for first place with Harvard, Princeton, and MIT. The recent (flawed) NRC rankings has it second or fourth depending on which methodology was used. Precision doesn’t matter – it’s one of the best.

Ever heard of the Chicago School of Economics?
