I applied last night. I changed my Why Chicago at the last second and I’m pretty proud of it, which means that I’m happy with of all three of my supplemental essays. At this point, I can only hope for the best…

I’m applying early action too. Submitted during the second week of October.
It’s definitely a reach for me, I’m not expecting to get in, hopefully that wil lessen potential disappointment. However, I fit within the ranges and am proud of my essays. I’ll be suprised and EXTREMELY happy if I am accepted.

I also requested an alumni interview but have not heard back. I figured maybe I’d just try to schedule an on-campus interview instead, but there are no available dates! Has anyone been contacted for an alumni interview?

I’m applying EA as well! I was just thinking of starting a thread for it when I saw this :)

Good luck to all you guys!

While we wait with bated breaths to go to this AMAZING university for the next (eep!) 6 weeks, let’s get to know each other a bit better? Maybe we’ll even see each other on campus in about 10 months! :)

On a slightly different note - who here has/is planning to submit supplementary material to UChicago? :S I didn’t really plan to but now that I registered for an account on the website, I noticed that section.

Of course!
5) The topic you chose for your creative essay?
I wrote about a non-scientific method.
6) In your opinion, which was your best essay?
My commonapp main essay was really good (feels weird to say that). I was extremely proud of it, I think it expressed me well and was about an experience not many have had. I was also proud of my extended essay, it showed a different side of me.
7) What you want to major in?
Political science (international relations) and Spanish. Possibily econ. Not sure!
8) Whether Chicago’s a safety/likely/reach school for you
I didn’t think Chicago could be anyone’s safety! I’d call it a reach!
9) How badly do you want to go on a scale of 1 to 10?
NEED to go! >10

Oh. And I called the office of admissions today and asked about interviews. They said that many emails about the alumni interviews will be going out this week! And if the interviewer in your area doesn’t have room for you, you’ll receive an email informing you of this around Thanksgiving.

1) Where you’re from
Massachuestts
2) When you submitted your application
10/29/11
3) How long/hard you WORKED on your app (very applicable for UChicago :P)

4) Did you do the optional favorites essay?
Yep!

Time you found something you werent looking for

I think Chicagos a reach for everyone.
9) How badly do you want to go on a scale of 1 to 10?
10. Definitely.

Thanks, siriusly! I’m wondering whether I should’ve even opted for an interview though. Does it help/make a difference?

And haha, I guess I should’ve said likely/reach and left out safety because I’ve actually met people who consider it to be a “guaranteed” for them

1) Where you’re from
New Jersey<3
2) When you submitted your application
October 31st, at about 2:35 AM xD
3) How long/hard you WORKED on your app (very applicable for UChicago :P)
Very hard, for all my essays combined I had 35+ drafts for all my essays combined T_T
4) Did you do the optional favorites essay?
Yep! Wrote about The Once and Future King and why it was my favorite book. Not uber creative considering I just talk about it, but I think it’s well written and sends a good message I’d give it a 8/10 because it was still pretty good in my opinion.
5) The topic you chose for your creative essay?
I wrote about something I found when I wasn’t looking for it. I talked about a video game :/. It’s a creative topic/answer I guess, and it was well written, but I felt it could have been more “passionate.” I’d give it a 7/10.
6) In your opinion, which was your best essay?
My “Why UChicago” essay. It was my most creative essay, and I think I really showed why I LOVE UChicago (no, I did not compare UChicago to a lover, I was just emphasizing that I actually love the University).
7) What you want to major in?
Economics, but I can’t wait to go there, take the core, and see what else I’m interested in! Hopefully I can minor in history or political science. I’m scared to double major because I know UChic is very intensive, but we’ll see what happens!
8) Whether Chicago’s a safety/likely/reach school for you
I think UChicago is probably a reach for everyone, considering they stress the essays so much. I think I can get in, and I’m staying positive, but it is still probably a reach :/.
9) How badly do you want to go on a scale of 1 to 10?
TEN, 10, 1zero,one0, how many other ways you can say 10! UChic is my first choice! If I get in I’m definitely going. Even if I end up magically getting into Harvard, I’d still choose UChic because I love it so much<333 ;o

North Carolina.

2) When you submitted your application

4) Did you do the optional favorites essay?
Yes! Favorite artist as I’m a photographer.

5) The topic you chose for your creative essay?
Essay option 3, Antonio Machado.

6) In your opinion, which was your best essay?
My best essay would have to be the extended, then favorite category, then Why Chicago.

7) What you want to major in
Environmental Science and/or I/O Psychology (or Psychology with I/O concentration)

8) Whether Chicago’s a safety/likely/reach school for you
Chicago is certainly a reach but I believe I have decent stats and even better advantages.

9) How badly do you want to go on a scale of 1 to 10?
10/10!

So I’m stressing out about recommendations, worrying about my essays, and about the deadline…
My interview is in eleven days, as well. SO NERVOUS!

1) Where you’re from: New Jersey
2) When you submitted your application: 10/29/2011

4) Did you do the optional favorites essay? You bet!
5) The topic you chose for your creative essay? Antonio Machado
6) In your opinion, which was your best essay? Common App main and optional essay. I was so excited when and after writing them and received ample positive feedback for both.
7) What you want to major in: No idea.
8) Whether Chicago’s a safety/likely/reach school for you: Reach?
9) How badly do you want to go on a scale of 1 to 10? 9. I’m afraid of setting my heart on any one school because it will ultimately come down to how much financial aid I receive.

Does anyone know if UChicago will weigh the extended essay or Why UChicago more than the others? I didn’t feel that that was my strongest, but I’m relatively confident in my essays overall.

1) south Carolina (winter months = terrified)

2) October 9

3) From start to finish about a solid 3 weeks.

6) Probably the one above

7) Economics and/or Policy

9) 10!

Is anyone else from the south? Haha

1) Where you’re from
New Jersey a.k.a. Dirty Jerz

2) When you submitted your application
10/18/11

3) How long/hard you WORKED on your app (very applicable for UChicago :P)
SO MUCH TIME. My extended essay was edited, edited again, and re-edited, and triple re-edited over and over and over again.

4) Did you do the optional favorites essay?
Yes, favorite choreographers/musicals/plays/performers because I’m a theater kid.

5) The topic you chose for your creative essay?
“Describe your unscientific method”

6) In your opinion, which was your best essay?
Extended, why chicago, than favorite things. My common app essay is also very cool as is my extra curricular essay! (:

7) What you want to major in
Microbiology and Theater! WOO!

8) Whether Chicago’s a safety/likely/reach school for you
It’s a reach for everyone, but I’ve really showed my passion in the sciences and arts enough to show that I want to pursue both very much. My scores/grades are very good. So, I think I stand as much competition as all the other amazingly fine people on these boards (: Good luck everyone, I hope that everyone ends up where they belong!

9) How badly do you want to go on a scale of 1 to 10?
10/10, I love UChicago so very much!

Where the heck is the optional favorites essay? I didn’t see that anywhere?

1) Where you’re from
Washington State (not D.C. foolz)
2) When you submitted your application
Now… lol
3) How long/hard you WORKED on your app (very applicable for UChicago :P)
Two teachers, my parents, 5 peers, and 7 drafts. LOL
4) Did you do the optional favorites essay?
Yes,
5) The topic you chose for your creative essay?
“What does Play-Doh have to do with Plato” Seriously nobody did this???
6) In your opinion, which was your best essay?
My Common App and my Plato essay are both powerful forces to be reckoned with. Especially after the intense editing procedure. My English teacher loved it, so it can’t go wrong
7) What you want to major in
Chemistry (and then into medical field)
8) Whether Chicago’s a safety/likely/reach school for you
Chicago would’ve been likely, but the fact that I am an male Asian international student lowers my chances significantly. At best, I hope to be squeezed into the less than 50 people they choose from international students. Wish you guys the best of luck!
9) How badly do you want to go on a scale of 1 to 10?
9/10, UChicago all the way. That is, unless if I get into UPenn ;)

They choose less than 50 international students?! Really? How do you know?

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME: if any of us apply to additional colleges, can we change our common app essays or any of the activities and the like? Or is it done now?

you guys are so lucky you’re applying EA, i’ll have to stick with RD !! Good luck, UChicago is really the greatest school ever !!

I am applying to UChicago and UMichigan EA and Northwestern ED. Best of luck to everyone! Chicago is definitely a reach for me, but I think my essays are fantastic.
