3) How long/hard you WORKED on your app (very applicable for UChicago :P)
I started thinking about the essay over the summer, and I ended up going with an idea I had mediumly early, but I didn’t start really working until a few weeks ago. I’m not sure exactly. And I worked pretty hard. I hope with all my soul it was hard enough… :)

8) Whether Chicago’s a safety/likely/reach school for you
ummm, I don’t know, I’m fairly middle range in terms of numbers, and I’ve got decent ECs (not totally crazy like some of the people claim to post on here), I hope my essays are good enough… I’d say slight reach.

9) How badly do you want to go on a scale of 1 to 10?
Probably 10. It’s my top choice, I’m really nervous that I won’t get in. So much anxiety.

Hi everybody! I just submitted my application last night, and I’m so awfully nervous! Apologies if I’ve missed anyone - but I think I’m the first international student here? You all seem like such strong candidates, by the way, even those of you who have described themselves as otherwise, I’m a tad intimidated by all of your test scores, haha.

Anyway, I’m Egyptian, living in Egypt. I’m an IB student, predicted 44/45 points (Level 7s in all of subjects except Maths SL + 3 bonus points for ToK/Extended essay - top of my class), which I’m completely stoked about. However, I only have a maximum combined score of 1970 in my SAT I, which appears to be completely rubbish compared to everyone else here, and haven’t taken the ACT/any SAT IIs. I don’t really have much an excuse, but due to the current political situation and disruptions, they sort of… came a far second to catching up to my other studies (I missed 2-3 months of school). Ah well, what’s done is done, I suppose!

On the brighter side, my ECs are alright:

 • MUN for the past 5 years, participated in 4 international conferences
 • Editor-in-chief/layout editor of my school newspaper
 • Muay Thai/Kickboxing/MMA
 • Long-distance running, nothing official yet, but I’m running my first half-marathon in March! So excited.
 • Head Girl at my school (it’s a British thing, sort of like student body president? But more focused on academics and student welfare in class)
 • Founded a student organization which raises funds to renovate schools in impoverished areas in the country
 • Teach arts and crafts, science and maths (sometimes English, too) to young children in ill-equipped (and quite honestly, generally dismal) government schools
 • As well as some other volunteer work, a little bit of dabbling with music, INJAZ (the Middle-Eastern equivalent of Young Enterprise - my school’s company basically) and some other things.

Apologies for blabbing! As an English HL student, I tend to get a tad carried away when it comes to writing (which was an absolute nuisance concerning the required essays). I answered the one about finding a path between Play-Doh and Plato, I’m not sure which one is my best, honestly. To say I’m absolutely desperate to get accepted would be an understatement, it took me forever and a day to convince my ultra-conservative father to agree to the idea that studying abroad was not a completely awful idea, and he agreed on the condition that the university is UChicago - otherwise? Hello, Cairo University. And seriously? One of the Econ professors there refuses to answer any of the girls’ questions, with the excuse: “you have no reason to be here, you’re just going to get married off and stay at home anyway”. Err, yeah.

Good luck to everyone here, especially to those of you with upcoming interviews!
