Historically, Decision Day has happened on December 15th, though the admissions office got the decisions out a bit later than usual for the class of '15, and I imagine that will be the case this year too.

ahhhhhhh… the anticipation!

I honestly thought this would be the easiest part, but its turning out to be the hardest. I hate waiting, because I can’t DO anything. Getting my application in was all dependent upon me. Now I have to wait for other ppl… lol

When did they release the decisions last year?

The sheer number of applications unnerves me more! It’s probably going to be more competitive this year than in previous years aaaaaa

1) Where you’re from
Northeast
2) When you submitted your application
10/30
3) How long/hard you WORKED on your app (very applicable for UChicago :P)
Not too long, I write pretty quickly, but I did put more time in for UChicago than for any of my other schools.
4) Did you do the optional favorites essay?
Yes! I wrote about my favorite book!
5) The topic you chose for your creative essay?
I made my own topic!
6) In your opinion, which was your best essay?
Why Chicago?
7) What you want to major in
Biology
8) Whether Chicago’s a safety/likely/reach school for you
I would think that it would be a reach, but who really can say?
9) How badly do you want to go on a scale of 1 to 10?
Probably an 8 or 9. It’s definitely in my top 3, but I have no idea which school I would pick if I was to get into all of them!

Just an advice from a current student: do not call the admissions office just to ask when the decisions will come out. I did that when I was applying, and they totally lied! They said: “we have absolutely no idea when the decisions will come out; the committee is still reviewing applications”.

And… the results were posted three hours later.

I’m sick with a head cold and I can’t sleep, so I decided that I might as well post my info to this forum.

1) Where you’re from
-New York (Hours from the city)

2) When you submitted your application
-10/31

3) How long/hard you WORKED on your app (very applicable for UChicago :P)
-I spent a good deal of time on it, revising my essays multiple times.

4) Did you do the optional favorites essay?
-Yes, although it was quite brief, possibly in a bad way.

5) The topic you chose for your creative essay?
-Finding something I wasn’t looking for. This essay is more lighthearted than it is “intellectual,” so I am not sure how it will be received.

6) In your opinion, which was your best essay?
-I liked my creative essay the best, but my common app essay is most memorable.

7) What you want to major in
-Most likely psychology.

8) Whether Chicago’s a safety/likely/reach school for you
-High Reach

9) How badly do you want to go on a scale of 1 to 10?
10

*Side Note: It would take a miracle for me to get in. On my application I chose to reveal that I spent almost half of my sophomore year in an extended stay substance abuse rehabilitation center. Although I know some colleges may deny me right off the bat for admitting that, I feel that choosing not to disclose what happened would be like hiding part of myself from the admissions committee. I did try to show the time spent away in a positive light, and talked about how I now educate younger students about the dangers of drug abuse. As I have first-hand experience and am someone they can relate to, they leave with a much greater sense of the dangers associated with drug abuse.

As for everything else, I have good extracurriculars as well as test scores in the first percentile, although my grades are lacking. The time I spent in treatment hindered my academic career, so even though I self-studied and got a good deal of help with my schoolwork upon my return, I do have a few B’s on my transcript.

Sorry for the long winded comment.

1) Where you’re from
International

2) When you submitted your application
10/15

3) How long/hard you WORKED on your app (very applicable for UChicago :P)
Probably two months. Obviously I didn’t write two month’s worth of material quantity-wise, but a lot of it was spent staring pensively in front of a laptop for my answer

4) Did you do the optional favorites essay?
Yes. It was even longer than my creative essay at one point so I had to cut it down, but I hope it gave the big picture of who I am through what I like.

5) The topic you chose for your creative essay?
Play-doh to Plato. Mine was a bit of a spoof so I hope they got that through the formatting/wording of some parts of the essay.

6) In your opinion, which was your best essay?
Creative. I was quite proud of it once I finished, and clicked the submit button with much satisfaction >:)

7) What you want to major in
Anthropology

8) Whether Chicago’s a safety/likely/reach school for you
Reach. Psychologically speaking, I don’t want to admit this. But U Chicago’s become a reach for almost anyone (my reaction to cognitive dissonance, I suppose, but quite true as well.)

9) How badly do you want to go on a scale of 1 to 10?
10

Good luck to everyone! I hope everyone who has the intellect and drive get to see that wonderful acceptance letter come mid-December, truly.

Anyone know the date when we we’ll find out decisions? What was it last year? Thanks :)

Last year EA was December 17th, and RD was March 18th. This year? I would hazard a guess that possibly December 16th would be the date, as it is the same Friday in December. But one cannot be sure. Keep your eye on the admissions blog for more details. But then again, knowing the internet, the second it gets put up, you guys will have 30 threads talking about the date. Not that is a bad thing

I kinda regret my starting this thread. Worrying so much about going to a college like Chicago before has really depleted much of my energy. I suggest instead of posting here on CC about your stats and whatnot, have some FUN in your senior year and realize that this is technically the last year of your teenage years, and before long, you’ll be toiling in the real world. Get off this place and go watch some Sunday night football :)

lol, @andrewsun1994, I am afraid you have already unleashed the monster and cannot stop it anymore.

I’m so nervous! I wish I could skip a month and just find out about decisions already.

1) Where I’m from:
California! I don’t know how I’ll survive the weather if I do by some miracle get accepted O.O

2) When I submitted my application:
October 31, 2011 at around 1 AM

3) How long/hard I worked on my application:
I’m not really sure. I think I started around September, though I didn’t do much until like two weeks before I submitted my app.

4) Did I do the optional essay:
Yup. Discussed my undying love for the band Queen. I seem to be one of the very few who didn’t talk about a book…

5) The topic I chose for my creative essay:
“Between living and dreaming is a third thing. Guess it.”

6) My best essay:
I worked super hard on my essays and I’m pretty darn proud of them! I think my Common App, Why Chicago, and Creative Essay are probably all tied.

7) What I want to major in:
No clue

8) Whether Chicago’s a reach/likely/safety school for you:
Chicago is a reach school for everyone -____- But I definitely am not too confident about my chances. My very competitive school has several people who apply, many of whom have 4.0’s and 2300’s. But we’ll see.

9) How badly I want to go:
Soooo badly.

How are you guys going to celebrate (hopefully!)/console yourselves after decisions come out?

Anyone else feel like senior year is going by so fast? The year’s almost halfway over!

1) Where I’m from:
Maryland!

2) When I submitted my application:
10/31 right before the first trick or treaters came along

3) How long/hard I worked on my application:
Probably over a day and a half total

4) Did I do the optional essay:
Yes. Talked about the play “Death of a Salesman”

5) The topic I chose for my creative essay:
“Between living and dreaming is a third thing. Guess it.”

6) My best essay:
Honestly I think my best was the Common App short answer

7) What I want to major in:
Biology

8) Whether Chicago’s a reach/likely/safety school for you:
Reach, just because so many qualified people every year apply and some more qualified than me don’t make it. I go to a magnet school where every class I take is ridiculously difficult, so my GPA is so hopelessly deflated.

9) How badly I want to go on a scale of 1 to 10:
Maybe an 8? I like the school, but I can’t say that I will definitely go there if I get accepted.

I had my interview today with an alumni and I felt I did OK, so I’m hoping that will help my application.

1) Where you’re from
California

2) When you submitted your application
October 31st, submitted my supplement at the same time

3) How long/hard you WORKED on your app (very applicable for UChicago :P)
On the common app essay, at least 15 hours. Probably about 3 for the extended essay, and about 2 hours on the why UChicago? and an hour on the optional

4) Did you do the optional favorites essay?
Yep, but it wasn’t anything special.

5) The topic you chose for your creative essay?
I responded to the quote about what’s between living/dreaming and I wrote about writing. A little meta, in my opinion.

6) In your opinion, which was your best essay?
My commonapp essay was definitely my best.

7) What you want to major in
English.

8) Whether Chicago’s a safety/likely/reach school for you
I wonder if anyone put down safety for UChicago… Anyway, it’s a reach.

9) How badly do you want to go on a scale of 1 to 10?
9

@limdelbarton: May this admissions cycle deflate your massive ego. A 5? If you would be ambivalent to attend one of the finest institutions in the world…don’t apply.

I applied EA.
From Philly, top 10% of class, 2070 SAT, 28 ACT , Mock Trial co-captain, Big Brothers, troop support group, school paper, ambassador program, community service corps, alumni service group
heard the acceptance rate for EA is 43%, that’s really high…

Whoa, where did you hear the admissions rate for EA was 43 percent???

it was NOT 43%.
i believe it was more like 20-23%.

EA acceptance rate will drop again this year.
good luck to you guys.

It’s 1:40 and I’m procrastinating GOING TO SLEEP.
Look at my life; look at my choices.

October 31st or early November 1st

4) Did you do the optional favorites essay?
I wrote about my favorite TV shows. Oh yes.

5) The topic you chose for your creative essay?
Play-Doh -> Plato, written as a big ol’ short story. It’s pretty good.

6) In your opinion, which was your best essay?
My commonapp or Play-Doh -> Plato.

7) What you want to major in
English, Cinema and Media Studies, other stuff too, I don’t know. Mostly English.

October 31st

3) How long/hard you WORKED on your app (very applicable for UChicago :P)
Quite a while on Why UChicago which was a dumb idea…I ended up doing my Extended Essay a week before the deadline. Favorites didn’t put too much effort in because it was easy. I actually put in a lot of effort for my Common App essay but it still turned out terrible.
