@alpha525 What do you mean it’ll be harder?
@NotVerySmart ayyy that’s me, ivy league reject
@dr0wning. LOL. I don’t know whether that’ll be a challenge for me or not, as I haven’t lived through a winter since I was 4. I hope it won’t be for you. Good luck with EA decisions.
I did send them the scores though. If I don’t selfreport it, will they not see it?
They will see it, but they only take into consideration your highest score.
@TrazCapDEV @dr0wning “Marginal advantage” is all it takes
@dr0wning @TrazCapDEV But again I still think Columbia Ed was easier than this.
Guys, if you had the option of 2 admission plans with rates of:
College A:
100/500 getting in
College B:
200/1000 getting in
Which would you pick?
It’s both 20%, but I think there’s a slight advantage to one of them.
The smaller school may be more self-selective. We’d need more data.
For instance, historically, Caltech has had a much higher acceptance rate (not so true now) than similar schools. That’s not because they accepted worse applicants, but simply because fewer people knew about the school.
Well, assume its the same school. This is a completely hypothetical situation. Do you guys think Chicago would be easier to get in with 1000 applicants or 500 applicants. Because with 1000, you need to beat out 800, but with 500 you need to beat out 500.
All other things being equal (which they never are), I’d pick College B. There’s @tutututututuru 's point (this used to be true of UChicago - it was arguably superior by far to many schools with 30-40% acceptance rates, but had a fairly high rate because the applicant pool was self-selecting. Now, not so much.).
The other consideration is whether the 100-acceptance college is looking for very specific types to fill its class. They may not want to “unbalance” the class of 2020 by admitting too many kids with a certain profile early, so they’re more likely to defer a stellar tuba player or quiz bowl captain if they’ve already accepted a couple.
A 200-acceptance class leaves more room for error, as the college can iron out its class more easily in the RD round as well as through some of those kids choosing another school. If you accept 8 quiz bowl kids to a 100-acceptance college, and 7 of them enroll when you expected 4, you’ll have fewer spots for the other profiles you’re seeking. With the denominator at 200, they can feel more confident about locking in spots for several similar students…
Interesting points.
So are we sure the decision date is the 18th? And do we know the time?
We are sure. All it said was late afternoon. I’d guess around 5 central.
Thank you!!
@alpha525 in what way was columbia ed easier?
Hi guys. Rejected from ED school, now pinning hopes on UChicago.
Deferred from my ED school…praying for a uchicago acceptance now
Same, deferred from Penn
this is the home thread now
one week
@dr0wning I honestly have no idea. This just seems much harder.
