UChicago Class of 2023 Applicants

When S went to accept a position on the wait list it gave him the wait list option and the option to get onto the list for consideration to next year. So it looks like z list is being offered to anyone on waitlist status?

My daughter got in! She thought this was a long shot, so had almost decided on a different college. Now we need to visit both, sort out finances & go back to the decision drawing board! Whew!

@Mojo88 - sounds like it’s offered to those who are pulled - they can either join this year or next. Not sure. Others will need to weigh in on how it works. But don’t believe it’s offered to whoever is on waitlist status. UChicago traditionally waitlists a lot of RD’s so it’s only offered to a small group.

Sorry - misread @Mojo88’s post. Let’s try that again:

Yes, you could be correct that it’s offered to anyone who is given a waitlist. Not sure - but it sounds like from what you are saying you can choose either to accept a position on the wait list or a position on the z-list for the following year. Sorry about the confusion.

Also, just to be clear, this year might be very different from prior years in terms of how many are pulled from either list.

@carey46 congrats!! Where did you see your scholarship offer? Was it in the text of your acceptance?

I got in with merit scholarships… oh my god I’ve never been more shocked in my entire life. My stomach literally hurts from the adrenaline

Son waitlisted and given the option to go to z list. Anyone know when the waitlist candidates are notified? Like the deadline for waitlist. Is it before May 1 when they have to notify to other schools?

@crazyforhorses - you are waiting on Yale as well, correct?

@nrsebayer, you should be able to search prior year threads to see what the timing was. IIRC two years ago when they pulled aggressively from the W/L it was before May 1.

@JBStillFlying Yes on the waitlist portal it had two options 1) want to stay on waitlist? 2) want to go onto the list for consideration for 2024 and take a gap year if you don’t get off wait list? Does everyone who gets waitlisted get these two options? We have no point of reference for whether there are different wait list options or just one that everyone gets.
Congratulations to all who got in - a great accomplishment!

Daughter got waitlisted.

@catmomof3 yes! They offered me the 4K scholarship when I got the likely letter in January but they revised the letter to include the “re-evaluation of merit scholarships”

@JBStillFlying Yes!! I was deferred from REA, but to be honest I don’t think I have any chance, at my school no one ever gets in after being deferred. But today I also got into JHU so to be honest I am really excited. Yale is still my top choice but I have accepted that it likely won’t happen. I am so grateful for these other opportunities. Good luck with Yale as well!!

“Does everyone who gets waitlisted get these two options? We have no point of reference for whether there are different wait list options or just one that everyone gets.”

Good question! Hopefully others will be able to weigh in to provide clarity on whether Z-list is an automatic option or only offered to some. Prior years threads might be helpful as well, although what happened in prior years is no guarantee for this year.

@crazyforhorses - S19 was accepted to UChicago ED2 so his wait has been over for a month, thankfully

PS you never know with Yale - if UChicago gave you money you might have a stronger application than you are thinking =D> Congrats and good luck with your remaining choices.

@JBStillFlying congrats to your S!!! That’s amazing  and thank you, I really hope you’re right but I’m just grateful to have gotten in to UChicago, honestly, no matter what happens I am so lucky to have amazing options

Got in after EA deferral (0.5% acceptance rate who?) with the presidents scholars award!!!

S received an email that if he is ultimately admitted he will receive a merit scholarship of 20k plus 4K for research. Anyone else waitlisted get this??

Oh well… starting to think that applying ED as a National Merit Finalist has really messed things up for getting a scholarship ?

I was waitlisted
