So it’s confusing but I talked to the admissions rep. Sometimes, they’re able to pull students off the waitlist for the next fall. If not, they might offer you to start classes the fall after, after taking a gap year. The gap year offer would guarantee admission. You’re allowed to take community college classes, but you’re not allowed to enroll in another 4 year institution. So basically it’s like there are two separate facets of the WL. It’s tremendously confusing
@lshamzie Thanks for the share. So they can tell you that you’re Z-isted, plainly admit ya, tell ya to go to a community college for some set term time and then enroll. Fair enough.
THe reason for this is unclear to me at least cuz this implies there being many specific reasons for many specific plans.
But its smart to weigh in other options in case the “might” clause is stressed on too much, and have the best possible backup ready.
I asked about NMF awards at the FA session during admitted students day. They said they would award $2k/yr for any students that did not receive a NMSC scholarship (one time award of $2500) or a corporate-sponsored award.
They do not tell you to go to a community college. They say something like ‘you cannot take college classes for credit’ or ‘enroll in another institution’ but you can do whatever you like during the gap year, including not go to school; but if you do decide to take classes, again, it can’t be for credits. But definitely call admissions again if you are planning on taking college classes just to be sure.
Even too many community college credits can bump you out of “First Time in College” status and into “Transfer” status. Don’t take any college courses as a Z-lister without clearing up with Admissions what UChicago’s rules are about that. College courses that you desire to audit (and not take for credit) might be fine but, again, check with UChicago.
@KnightsRidge who notified your daughter? U Chi or NMO?
Just got into University Of chicago …man this Muddys the waters doesn’t it?
just committed after a grueling week of pros and cons!! Aaah! Not even sure about financial aid or anything …I bought 250dollars of College gear !
Proof that life is messy .we have to get used to it
Good luck everyone
congrats! where are you from and did you get into 2023?
Anyone getting off the WL from California?
@palsun not that I’ve heard. I’m a CA applicant and I sent my LOCI three weeks ago with no response. I called admissions and they said if you sent it to an RAC, they have it even if they don’t respond. Also there could be an overload of admitted CA applicants so idk
Good to hear that RAC did not get back to you as-well…i was so worried that i did not get any acknowledgment for receiving my LOCI. How do you that there is an overload of admitted CA applicants?
@palsun WL helps balance their class. You don’t want too many people from one state/region, the same way you don’t want too many people of the same gender/major/race/etc. They might not admit any CA admits if most of their class already comes from CA. But it could just be the RAC being too busy to speak with students right now.
@palsun I am from CA and sent my LOCI last week and got a response the very next day? Perhaps we have different admissions officers? I from southern CA, specifically LA. Also a guy in my grade got off last week for 2023, so they have taken people off the waitlist from CA.
I am from Northern California, we have a different RAC…
Does anyone know how many people they waitlisted this year?
I’m also so late to post this, but I got waitlisted with 4.2 weighted and I didn’t submit test scores. My letters of rec were really strong and I wrote very creative essays.
Absolutely hoping for the best at this point, and good luck to everyone else
Any updates yet?
@catmomof3 I’m pretty sure the original notice was a letter from NMSC. Her scholarship renewal letter for next year also came from NMSC.
my daughter got the NMF yesterday
My daughter (class of 2023) also received notification of a NMF scholarship through her portal this morning… through the national merit portal, not UChicago portal. From what she told me it is $2000, renewable every year.
