I really want to get into UChicago. Ths really isn't a chance thread rather an evaluation. I was wodnering if one could get in with decent-superior grades, essays, rec's, supplement materials... all that jazz but HORRIBLE test scores. My ACT is around a 28-29 and a sat score of 1900. I think my test scores are my only major weakness. I heard Uchicago doesnt even look at SAT 2's and barely at sat 1's. they said they only consider sat scores. Would really low test scores keep anyone out? I'm retaking SAT obviously and aiming for 2100-2200.

The U of Chicago takes a holistic approach to admissions. They do look at SAT scores and according to one of the admissions officers that I spoke with when my child applied, they would like to see around 1400 on the math and critical reading. They also average around 3.7 and above on their gpa. that being said, my child was admitted with around a 3.6 cum (many AP courses)
and originally 1340 on her SAT, but she brought them up to 1400. Originally she was deferred EA, but admitted regular. However, she had a great hook. She is an accomplished singer and had great recs. from the head of an ivy league music department where she frequently performed as well as singing in many major venues both in the U.S. and abroad. So, you really want to express a passion in something and show why you really want to go to the U of Chicago. They are looking for a good fit as you should be. Lots of luck.

I'm assuming that you understand you will be working yourself to death for the next four years.

^^ what do you mean?

Ignore him. There is a belief that UChicago is all work and no play. But for the kids that go there, it's perfect.

I thought that's what he meant, which is why I was prepared to refute.

lol that belief isn't true? my friend goes to u of c and he says they don't do much outside of academics...

In comparison to other schools, I think that's a fair judgment. You're not going to see the kinds of extracurricular and social life at Chicago that you will at other schools. However, that doesn't mean that there's NOTHING. There are plenty of opportunities to do things and get involved and have fun in ways that don't involve books-- IM sports, theater, fraternities/sororities, community service, the city itself, and all that jazz.

As for admissions at Chicago, if it makes you feel any better, I didn't have a 2100 and I think I had a 30 ACT (I didn't send it). I did, though, have >1400 out of 1600 (just barely!) and I've read that Chicago purges the writing score. (I believe admissions officer Libby Pearson confirmed that on one of the threads-- it would be great to get that confirmed).

Chicago does not require SAT II's: http://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/level2.asp?id=79

If I were you, Firebird, I would work on the part of the application that you have complete control over: the essays. Your "abysmal" SAT scores will not put you out of the running, and if you have the academic record and essays to confirm that you're intellectually capable of completing the work here and that you really do want to come here, I think that you can get in.

Ted O'Neill, dean of admissions, once visited my high school. When asked what kind of student he looks for, he said that he looks for students whom the professors will like teaching. I think the school is less concerned with the perceived prestige of its undergraduate college or the challenge of its admissions as it is concerned with attracting and keeping top faculty. What I mean to say is that they won't bump you out because of your low scores, but rather they'll see how you are as a student and try to determine if faculty will like working with you.

And, kyledavid and ses, for people who aren't students at Chicago, you're quick to defend the school! :-)

I still love the school itself (its uniqueness, etc.), even though I'm not applying. =)

what do you think a chance thread is?

^^ in chance threads, people often just say "reach/match/safety," without telling them their weaknesses/strengths.

He might also mean that since the OPs test scores are lower than UChicago's average, he might have to work extra hard.

But for the next 4 years ...?

Lmao. You never know...? :P

well I haven't given you my ec's, gpa, rec's have I? I just had a question... will a low sat score keep one out of chicago if everything else is good? I'm applying EA

btw I heard the admit rate for EA is 48 percent by collegeboard

Really, firebird? I read somewhere that it was around 40% for both EA and regular. Do you have a link?

ya just go to collegeboard.com search university of chicago.. click admissions tab and scroll down and do the math calculations yourself I believe... they will give you the number of accepts and overall applicants for EA.
