Supposedly they really don’t even glance at it. It is screened out of the files the admissions officers see. (At least that’s what they say. Or what they said – remember, there’s a new sheriff in Admissions Town.)

The writing test is the old English SAT II, and Chicago doesn’t require SAT IIs, which is fairly unusual in its peer group. Traditionally, it doesn’t think much of the test, preferring to make an independent judgment of writing/grammar skills through the essays it requires.

do they look at SAT II scores if we opt to send them?

Haha my counselor mentioned my writing score in her rec . . . so I guess they at least “glanced” at mine :P

I think they should look at the MC subscore and then read the essay themselves. Honestly, it’s extremely hard to come up with an intelligible essay in the span of 25 minutes under such immense pressure (no, not necessarily a 12 essay, but an essay that actually is impressive under non-CB standards -shows your ability to use critical thinking). It’s much harder and measures intelligence and academic potential much more than your ability to place arbitrary vocab words into a sentence, interpret a piece of writing in a supposedly objective fashion (even though, for the most part, interpretations of writings are, for the most part, subjective) or your ability to do 5th grade math. But, you know, some people are ‘talented writers but don’t perform well under those time constraints.’ Well…you know…I know a bunch of vocab words, there just happened to be 5 on the test that I didn’t know (bringing my score down 110 points!) but I guess only the slow (though still talented) writers get the benefit of the doubt from UChicago (and yes, I realize that there’s no other way for UChicago to test my reading comprehension abilities while there are other ways (essays) for them to test my writing skills).

It’d be a plus if they only look at my MC. Perfect MC, 9 on the essay =/
