Please excuse me if I’m not doing this right, it’s my first post Lol!
I’m an admit to the UChicago Class of 2021. I’m not sure if I’m attending yet, but I’m wondering what the personalities of the different dorms are. Any tips would be really appreciated so that I don’t have to scramble to fill in my Housing application!
Here are some facts about me, just in case someone feels I would fit perfectly in one of the dorms:
I love tennis. I’m on my high school’s varsity team
Photography and travel = my passions
If you were to open my Spotify, my most recent listens would be Shakira, Hoobastank, and Maroon 5
I’m pretty down-to-Earth and can kind of gel with anyone
I’m definitely gonna be a premed, probably a HIPS major but maybe Psych or Bio
SCAV IS SO COOL
I would love to have a great view, whether that’s the Chicago skyline, campus, etc. Also close to the dining hall
Close to the gym is a MUST.
I’m definitely going to rush a sorority (btw, any tips? Which sororities are highest-tiered?)
Thank you so much for the help! I’m most interested in learning about the following dorms, because from what I’ve read online (on the Housing website), these are the ones I’m most interested in: North Campus, Snell-Hitchcock, Burton-Judson.
I’m planning to live in Max Pavlevsky or Burton-Judson (“the BJ”).
If you look on Google Maps, the BJ is right by Granville-Grossman, the “party dorm.” From what I hear North is a bit weird since it’s the new one, but Granville-Grossman and Max still know how to have a good time, if you know what I mean. Max with its colors is the stallion of the bunch, brightly shining out over the grey Chicago sky. And BJ is only kind of a party dorm but it would be very easy for getting downtown. Just my thoughts!
Regular decision comes out in two days…maybe we’ll be roomies!
Hey, I was also admitted to the class of 2021 and am looking at the various dorm options. You don’t need to worry about scrambling to fill the housing application since your priority is determined by date of enrollment, not the date of submitting a housing application. The housing applications are due on June 2, which is about 2 1/2 months from now. I would suggest taking a visit to one of the April Overnights and touring some of the dorms that interest you. If this isn’t possible, then you should consider asking someone on CC, the class of 2021 Facebook group (after the overnights), or a current student.
North has on-site dining hall, proximity to the gym, and nice views from upper floors. Top floor has a 24 hour study area with panoramic views so you have access to that even if your own window gives you nothing interesting to look at.
Can’t speak to personalities (my daughter lives there – I don’t, and there are lots of different houses in North).
In my (unprofessional) opinion, it sounds like you would like North or BJ the best…but…congrats, you’re transcending stereotypes. There really isn’t a dorm that fits exactly what you said.
The good news is that stereotypes are just that, stereotypes. Take them with a grain of salt. You said you’d gel with anyone. You will find things you like in any dorm, it sounds like. So choose based off of amenities and location.
@HydeSnark Okay, thanks! I saw someone else post that the BJ is good for getting downtown, too… I’ll will probably spend most of free time downtown if I go to Uchicago (Hyde Park seems like it would get old quickly) so that’s good. Thank you for your input
@FunkyMonkey22 BJ isn’t really the best for getting downtown. Full disclosure - I live in BJ, I love BJ, and I go downtown a lot (way above average for this school, I think), but I’d rank the dorms purely on access to public transit like this:
Stony Island - the 6 right across the street, and it can take you downtown in about 20 minutes
North - the 55 stops right outside which will take you to either the Green or Red Lines
I-House - the 6 is one block away, and can take you downtown in a little longer than from Stony
BJ/South - lots of choices: walk to green line or the 6 bus (about 6 blocks away), take 63 bus (3 blocks away) to the Red line, take the 59 bus to the red line (1 block away, but doesn’t run on Sundays). The big downside with BJ and South is that the 59, which is most convenient, doesn’t run on Sundays, and the green line from Cottage Grove only leaves every 20 minutes off-peak. On weekday at rush hour, the 2 stops right at our front door and goes express to downtown really fast. I can get downtown just as fast as anyone from another dorm, but I need to use transit trackers to figure out the most efficient choice at that exact moment and it takes some practice to get good at it.
Snitchcock/Max - you’re nicely in the middle of campus, but your only choice is pretty much just the 55, which is a few blocks away and you still have to transfer. Faster than BJ/South at certain times or if you don’t know how the buses work, but you can get downtown faster from BJ/South most of the time if you choose the most efficient route.
@HydeSnark Thank you for help . Is it okay if I have another question? Mainly it is why did you put BJ/South and Snitchcock/Max together (is Snitchcock = “Snell-Hitchcock”?)? Are the dorms connected? Thank you in advance.
They aren’t connected, I just put them together cause the dorms are really close. BJ and South are back to back, Snitchcock (which is short for Snell-Hitchcock) is right near Max. Though I guess Max is a bit closer to the 55 than Snitchcock.
@HydeSnark - just curious - do students use uber/lyft much? Is public transport still the way to go, or are people uber pooling a lot? Have these services changed the way UChicago students get around?
@fbsdreams - yup that’s what I’ve heard too. I feel like uber pool/lyft is a game changer around UChicago. You can get downtown in half the time, for just a couple bucks more, with door to door service. Also, students could use it to get around Hyde park in a pinch (especially when it’s cold).
It makes it even easier to get to the symphony, restaurants downtown, art galleries, shopping, etc - all without having to wait at very cold bus/train stops in the winter!
(Trips to China town or pilsen might be easier/cheap with uber/lyft as well, but I haven’t checked on that.)
@HydeSnark - free U-Passes - that’s a nice perk! I don’t think we had that in my day.
Uber is a really nice additional service to have - especially late at night, when it’s really cold, or both. When I was an undergrad, sometimes I just wanted to explore the city on my own, but taking a cab back late at night seemed like such a splurge - one that I really couldn’t afford.
@andyinhishead This thread is about dorm personalities. I don’t mean to be hostile, but please move somewhere else if you would like to debate the merits of Uber vs. Lyft.

Anyway, @HydeSnark or @Cue7 do either of you know what the “Party” dorms are? I would like the maximum party, gym, scav, (aka fun) dorm. If there are more than one, I want the one furthest from the libraries.
@HydeSnark Thank you for the information. I am ineligible to live in “I-House” because I am from the states. It is really pretty from what I’ve seen online, though! What dorm do you live in, and do you do Scav?
