UChicago EA Applicants 2018

@ohhay i talked about him in my interview! specifically “harrison bergeron”

I think my supps were pretty good and tied my app together but my gpa and ACT kinda suck so Idk…

@ironcharriot I struggle SO much with wanting to talk about him in my essay, because he is an alumni (and also a major factor in wanting to apply there shhh I’m literally that crazy). Finally, I just sucked up, and I wrote the entire essay in one shot minus some minor edits. It just worked, you know? I’m working my way through Breakfast of Champions right now and I just want to SCREAM because I love it so much. What books have you read by him?

I wrote about Moneyball as my favorite book and Good Will Hunting as my favorite movie. I hope those are original enough…

i’ve read the story harrison bergeron, slaughterhouse 5, and cat’s cradle. want to read more though

@headedtogreat I totally get that. U of C is quite honestly a pretty solid reach for me if you look at my ACT (I didn’t even screw around with my SAT…my ACT score tells me I should have gotten like 120 points higher on my SAT. Oops.) I’ve got a weird major though (linguistics–not too weird, but I’ve shown some major dedication throughout high school so that might help), as well as specific leadership positions that show where my interests lie.

Don’t think about reasons for them to defer/reject you. Think about all the reasons University of Chicago would be dang lucky to have you!

@ironchariot if we end up at school together I’ll let you borrow my copies :)

Kinda late into the conversation, but all my essays were pretty not serious (not 100% humorous either because I chose the jokes prompt and I wrote about these really, really bad jokes that I like). I think I didn’t do as well on the ‘Why UChicago?’ essay… but I like other essays. I really put my voice and personality into it because that’s what most people compliment about my writing. I just hope they don’t look too much into the ‘Why UChicago?’ one :(

I’ll be honest, I’m not too big of a fan of Vonnegut. I’m not saying I hate his stuff, just not crazy about it.

I wrote about The West Wing as my favorite TV show. I’m going for a Poly Sci major, so it is fitting.

@ohhay sweet! thanks so much! it would be lovely to have you in my karass!

Vonnegut is a really acquired taste because he’s just such a weirdo. Harrison Bergeron is the perfect example of his style: completely absurd and hilarious (although I’d never ever want to have to analyze it–it would suck the humor straight out of it).

@debater1996 That’s absolutely perfect!

@Debater I LOVE The West Wing! I’m the only one at my school who even knows what it is. What a tragedy.

I don’t want to be cheesy, but I think I’m falling in love with UChicago even more because of this thread. I’m the only person at my school who even knows who Vonnegut and Camus are, so I know that the people at UChicago will definitely be to my liking! I mentioned Vonnegut briefly in my why UChicago essay, which was quite quirky but very literary. Also I wrote on the joke prompt but took a serious approach, I hope that comes across well. My supplement essay was more serious than quirky, really. And I didn’t do the optional essay, is there anybody else who didn’t? I hope that doesn’t go against me! It’s just that I mentioned a lot of my favorites in my why UChicago essay, so I thought the optional essay may be superfluous. Well, I hope that wasn’t a very serious omission on my part :(

Ermaahgawd Slaughterhouse-Five is my favorite!!! No clue who Camus is, though lol.

You guys are all so awesome  I want to meet you all next year so badly, I hope every one of us gets in! I just finished Hocus Pocus by Vonnegut, and I’m so in love with his style. I need to reread The Stranger, it’s been too long. I wrote my essay about how I organized my movie collection (I want to be a theatre major), and especially about Being John Malkovitch, Monty Python, Mel Brooks and Psycho. @crazychic I don’t think it’ll count against you, I think writing it can help but not writing it won’t hurt, I’ve definitely read about other people on here getting in without it before

Ah no way my essay was based on Slaughterhouse Five!

@imternational, Albert Camus is a French writer, one of is most know work is the stranger. It is a awesome but sad story.

Lol yeah I googled.

That’s okay, you don’t have to know, he gave me the inspiration to become an existentialist. That is why I know him.
