Loved this reference haha, so true.

That article is a masterpiece.

Philovotist,

Mea culpa, but glad you liked the article. Your e-mails are consistently interesting and provocative, and I knew you really did not believe that, but could not resist yanking your chain slightly re the similarities between “Intelligent, Cool, Passionate Kids Come Here” and an advertising slogan for a luxury good.

You chain yanker! :o

Based in our last year experience, I can only tell you to follow your heart, and intuition when choosing an university, This is one of the most important decision of your life. It is not about your parents, friends and peers.Do your research and being as honest as you can with yourself, what you truly want, not rankings, ego trip , etc. That said, choosing a top university t is not a crime, it is a great golden opportunity. My kid choose UCHICAGO mostly for the core and the opportunity to explore signatures before deciding a major. Also for the highly intellectual vibe of the student body and the university in general. UCHICAGO is a marvelous university, but it is not for everybody. As Harvard or MIT are not for every body.Follow your dreams , find your fit and go for it. Good luck !!

Just to clarify: is the EA pool still at a slight advantage? I know that it has been in recent years, but is it possible that this crazy increase in applications will result in a lower acceptance rate for EA than it will for RD?

I recall EA acceptance rate has always been slightly higher then RD acceptance. I saw a statistic of 16% rate for EA and 14% for RD last year. I don’t think EA gives any advantage other than getting acceptance early.

Eh…for a very small number of top ranked colleges, the gain from early applications is nonexistent.

But I mean ‘very small’.

Last year, the EA rate was 17 something percent, while RD was “below 10%” (I don’t know the exact number). There is a large gap between the two, not just a small one.

But many of those spots are reserved for athletic recruits, hooks, etc. So that the acceptance rate for unhooked is lower than it appears.

And I would propose Early applicants are usually stronger applicants.

^ Don’t think so, the strongest of the overall college applicant pool probably apply SCEA to Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Stanford.

^ Not the STEM kids. MIT and Caltech also have unrestricted EA. But overall, you’re probably right. Seems like the EA pool would be about equal to RD and the admissions rate may just be skewed by the athletic recruits, though I think there is still a slight bump for EA applicants over RD. This could be due to “fit,” those who forgo HYPS SCEA obviously like UChicago more than those schools and probably display a better match for UChicago, so they are admitted at a higher rate than RD applicants although they might be objectively equal.

last year’s Admitted Students’ Reception at San Francisco, Mr. Nondorf said:

RD average SAT score: 2300+
RD Acceptance rate: 8.7 %

FYI.

RD admitted students had that average likely, not the entire applicant pool.

It’s a little difficult for me to believe that Nondorf said that 2300 was the average, because UChicago doesn’t even look at the writing portion of the SAT. So any averages they would have would be based on 1600 as the highest possible score.

They do not look at the writing portion of the SAT, but they do compile statistics about it. It is on College Board’s website.

I agree with rlmmail, the only scores I’ve ever heard reported by Chicago have been out of 1600.

Even if you extrapolate the reported 25-75 percentile scores from last years class (1440-1540), you only get 2160 to 2310. So it’s more likely the average was in the 2200s somewhere.

If you look at the statistics (average SATs of 2160-2310 for ATTENDING students), and consider the fact that EA admitted student quality is likely lower than RD admitted student quality on average, then it’s certainly feasible that the average SATs for ADMITTED students during the RD round was greater than 2300. (I would think it to be upper 2200s or lower 2300s, without being given any further information.)

Let me assure you the claim that all (or the vast majority) of the top students in the world apply SCEA to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Stanford is a joke.

There are plenty of talented students at many high schools around the world who don’t apply to HYPS at all (let alone SCEA) for many reasons–they aren’t interested in those schools, they don’t think they can afford to go, those schools programs don’t fit their interests, they don’t want to go to school overseas, some talented but overly humble people incorrectly assume they couldn’t get in, etc.

For years, more than anything, applying SCEA had to do with income or the kind of high school you went to. Feeder school students are the most likely to apply SCEA in general, certainly in the U.S. There are plenty of smart students stuck in mediocre high schools across America who don’t have sophisticated college advising programs. It is true, however, these days all types of early admissions program seem to be catching on a bit more in general. And programs like QuestBridge help…

The best proof not all top students apply SCEA to HYPS is the application statistics. HYPS SCEA apps don’t affect UChicago much one way or the other. For several years Harvard and Princeton did not offer SCEA so clearly they were not pulling any ‘top’ applicants from anyone for early admissions. In fact, when H & P reinstated early admissions, UChicago had a strong increase in the number of early apps–there was not merely a redistribution of applicants among HYPS and UChicago. Indeed, UChicago’s numbers have continued to increase no matter what the other schools do–whether HYPS do or don’t offer SCEA admissions.
