With your goals in mind, I’d say NYU Stern.

Guys, let’s all take a deep breath and calm down. Arguing over these details isn’t helping the OP any. Let’s bring it back to what matters: what the OP is looking for.

Where do you want to be? Both are fine schools in fine cities, but Hyde Park is definitely different from the Village.

What kind of education are you looking for? Chicago is famed for its Core Curriculum, offering a broad, liberal-arts approach, while Stern may be more focused and narrow in its courses (not that you can’t have depth at Chicago and breadth at NYU; it’s just that the educational philosophies are different)

What kind of community do you want? College isn’t just about studying, nor is it just the end result. You’re going to be going to school for four years, and the quality of life is going to be important and can impact your performance as well. I love the culture at Chicago; I find it fun and exciting, but others might see it as too pretentious (i.e. “That Kid”-ism). NYU has less defined of a campus culture, the victim or not of all that New York City offers.

What do you want to be doing? You haven’t really told us what your passions, desires are. If you’re looking strictly for a WS job, NYU can offer the more convenient location (for what that’s worth). If you’re more flexible on your destination, Chicago would open more doors in other professions/fields.

Think about yourself first, and see which college reflects your goals and aspirations better.

I’d say UChicago. Just saw this on CNN a couple of days ago:

The Cost of College: Dream school, nightmare debt

“For high school salutatorian Ryan Durosky, there was no question that he would go to his dream school, New York University. It’s a name-brand school, but it cost him. Now, he’s nearly $300,000 in debt, and he’s not alone.”

[The Cost of College: Dream school, nightmare debt – amFIX - CNN.com Blogs](http://amfix.blogs.cnn.com/2010/05/25/the-cost-of-college-dream-school-nightmare-debt/)

^ I don’t think its worth on taking that much debt for any school, be it NYU Stern, Chicago, or Harvard. Not sure how this anecdote really helps the TC make his decision…

From what I hear, Chicago is much stronger overall than NYU, and is unparalleled if you want to go into post-university economic studies. If you go to Chicago and decide that Economics isn’t your thing, you also have the option of switching into one of its many other strong majors. However, if you’re sure you’re really sure you wanna work in finance, then I think Stern is probably the school that will get you the most opportunities and better job offers.

Just so you guys know this thread is already 5 years old and the OP went to UChicago (if you look at his post history) and most likely already graduated from there.

Oh wow! I didn’t even look at the date of the post! My bad!

nah, I still feel it’s important have threads such as these (if not this one exactly) up and well-discussed, since I’m sure more kids are lurking and in similar situations, but haven’t actually posted a thread asking for advice.

Any help is certainly welcome, I’d think, by any party in this very turbulent part of one’s life.
