Uchicago Essays

For the sake of puttin them out there. here are my first two Uchic essays. I felt they werent greaty since i submitted them 25 minutes be4 the deadline, but feedback would be great. thanks.

1)How does the University of Chicago, as you know it now, satisfy your desire for a particular kind of learning, community, and future? Your response should address with some particularity your own wishes and how they relate to Chicago.

“The University of Chicago is tight!” A friend and current student at your university told me, and from what I’ve observed over the last 3 years, I would have to agree. We have been “friends” for a while, you and I. I’ve really enjoyed and read all the mail you’ve sent me. You really are a university with a sense of humor, something I feel other schools lack. Moving on, I would like to attend because the University of Chicago posses the two thing I want most out of a university, Top notch academics, and good food. The debating environment is perfect for me; I am looking forward to verbal confrontation that could erupt at any moment.<br>
The original suggestion to apply came from my father, an economist who is obsessed with the work of professors Robert Foggel and Gary Becker. I was initially hesitant, as any one with a transcript like mine would be, I’m sure you noticed the many C’s and D’s on my application from my ninth and tenth grade years. My junior year I was unsatisfied with my situation, and made an earnest effort to turn things around. I was shocked when I made honor roll, and since then, kept pushing myself academically. My performance has jumped, and I am more focused than ever. I am equipped with a new mentality, and work ethic, and now here I am applying to one of the finest universities in the world. A university where the definition of fun is satisfying your intellectual curiosity, and as odd is it may sound; I’m looking forward to doing hours of homework, the camaraderie with my future peers, and study groups will add to the experience. A university where you have to make it on your own, you work hard, and you play hard. I want the full “Chicago” experience, and with all the resources and opportunities that University of Chicago offers, I could imagine no other place where I would spend my next four years.

2)Tell us about a few of your favorite books, poems, authors, films, plays, music, paintings, artists, magazines, or newspapers. Feel free to touch on one, some, or all of the categories listed or add a category of your own.

<pre><code>“Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley is my favorite book. I loved the suspense, and the imagery, I felt the book was far better than any of the movies. An exception to that is the movie” Van Helsing”, which overall it was a good movie, it had a weak story, but really cool action scenes. It was in that movie that Frankenstein was finally created as I had imagined.
I listen to all kinds of music, but Arabic and Hip-hop are my favorites. My favorite band is “Igd Elgalad” a Sudanese band, whose music revolves around Sudanese culture, with a patriotic tone. On of their latest songs “Abu Al Surra” describes an old mans trip to the American Embassy in Khartoum, how he got all his forms, and departed for America. It’s definitely my favorite song of all time. My favorite hip-hop artist is Ludacris; I like his use of beats, and words, his music videos are pretty entertaining too.
My favorite time of the year are those few minutes when the airplane doors open and hot wind slaps me in the face as I walk down the steps. Words really can’t express the joy I feel when I’m finally out of the airport, and on the way to my grandmother’s house. I love passing the streets where me and my cousins had wondered the previous year looking for a place to eat or play billiards. I miss the dusty streets, I miss sleeping on the balcony, I miss staying up telling stories with my cousins or playing practical jokes, I miss Sudan, and can’t wait to feel those minutes of extreme, super duper joy again. Hopefully this time I’ll be able to tell my grandmother that I will be attending the same university whose name she spent all of last summer trying to pronounce.
