I hope the institute can show us how issues that don’t seem to be receptive to objective analysis and implementation can be solved or at least alleviated through scholarship. You have to wish for the best for this ambitious initiative. Also, it is very interesting how the Pearson family is not directly connected to the university yet chose to give this astounding gift.

^ Yeah. Both brothers went to DePauw University and one was an executive for a coal producer. Big coup for the university.

Jim Crown, who chaired Chicago’s Board of Trustees for most of the last decade, and has one of the houses in South Campus named for him, is an alumnus of Hampshire College and Stanford Law School. He is the grandson of Henry Crown, for whom the Henry Crown gym was named . . . but Henry Crown never attended the University of Chicago, either. Chicago has a long history of attracting support from non-alumni.

^ Yeah but this $100 Million!! That is one big fat gift to give a school where you had no connection. No wonder President Zimmer is appreciative

Maybe there are children/grandchildren applying.

With the dedication and brilliant minds at UChicago, this kind of contribution may help change the world for the better.

Harvard University’s Kennedy School had an interesting discussion on one such topic about global conflicts centered around Islamism. While this discussion was qualitative, imagine what results a fact based data driven analysis on such an important topic might yield. Could result in some genuine and much needed insights
