*Important: I failed first semester algebra 2 my sophomore year and retook it the same year and got a B. I mentioned this in my "additional information" section of my Common App (mostly due to me having to worry and care for my grandfather who got bone cancer, and my teacher's incompetence. She was so bad the entire class got switched to a new teacher for second semester. But I didn't mention the teacher incompetence part so I wouldn't sound like I'm blaming her for failing.)*****

I know my GPA hurts big time. I hope my test scores and extracurriculars can make up for it though!

If your GPA wasn’t so low I think you would have a very good chance almost everywhere. If you get all As this semester you will improve your chances.

I believe I ended up with 4-5 A’s and 2-3 B+'s – does this help at all (6 APs and 1 honors)? I also got 5 A’s, 1 B+, and a B on my midterm exams (which appear on my midyear report I believe).

Can anyone chance me for UMich and UNCCH please?

I like your Courseload, your sat and GPA might be a bit low though. However, your EC’s make up for it. Chance me please
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1597246-chance-me-harvard-upenn-princeton-stanford-will-chance-back-2.html</a></p>

Every thing is outstanding except GPA, but colleges don’t care about grades anymore there prefer academic rigor instead. It seems you took the hardest classes available. so no worries and good luck. and congrats!

Chance me back?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1598890-what-my-chances-these-schools.html</a></p>

UChicago (EA) - Reach
JHU - Low Reach/Reach
Cornell - Low Reach/Reach
CMU - High Reach (One of the most competitive CS schools.)
Georgia Tech - Match
Stanford - High Reach (Another very competitive school.)
Northwestern - Low Reach/Reach
USC - Match

GPA is pretty bad, 3.5 is half A’s half B’s, which just won’t cut it for some of these schools. Test scores are pretty good but not outstanding (25th percentile for schools like Stanford). I think your ECs are good but some of them are pretty hard to see the weight of (two times you said you were part of a really good debate TEAM). You’re African American, which will help, but not that much. Good luck, it’s good that you already know what you’d like to do (3-d printing).

hahaha true. I place/final at almost all national tournaments I go to for my events and have won lots of regional/district level tourneys (I wrote I have a lot of awards individually i don’t want to list). Thanks man! Would you mind chancing me for CMU’s CIT and IS (I applied to those two as well)?

LOL. Yeah, go with that. Tell us how that works out for you.

To the OP:

With the possible exception of Georgia Tech, your test scores are average and your GPA is below average. Most of your schools - Chicago, Stanford, USC, Northwestern, Cornell & JHU - have admit rates below 20%. That combination makes them reaches in my book, not impossible but difficult.

@Decimation

For CMU:

SCS: Reach
CIT: High match/low reach
IS: Match

Also I applied to CMU as a materials science major early decision and got in, so if you have any questions let me know! :)
