[*] The only advice I can give is that essays probably really count in the final decision because my academics are average compared to some of the people here, so if you're applying Regular Decision (Idk if that's passed us by yet?) then put a lot of effort into your essays, and try your damndest to join some clubs you really care about. Also, I got to say that you have to relax because I never worried about getting in or not getting in, if it's meant to be it'll happen. Finally, don't be afraid to, you know...actually have a social life, I did and it didn't hurt me one bit or prevent me from doing well or getting into the colleges I wanted to get into. [/ul]</p>
<p>DS was accepted! He doesn't want to share too many specifics online...
I'm too darned old to figure out these brackets...</p>
<p>SAT: big score
SAT II: Math Level II, Physics, World History, big scores
GPA: decent, but UW not as high as everyone thinks. 4.6 weighted
APs and other tests: Calc BC, Comp Sci AB and US Govt in 10th; Stat, WH and Eng Lang in 11th -- got the same score on all. 12th: Physics C, Comp Gov't. Also taken 11 post-AP courses.<br>
AMC12 & AIME = respectable
Rank: school doesn't rank (thank goodness)
Supplemental material: submitted research paper he used for Siemens and Intel. Have submitted for publication elsewhere, too.
Essays: quirky, fiercely intellectual, passionate. Very much reflected who he is.
Teacher Recs: Haven't seen them, but expected CS to be really good, and World Hist to talk about how DS likes to argue in class discussions. Also submitted recs from his mentor at local U about depth of DS's research and from director at summer math program about his personal growth.
Counselor Rec: excellent (haven't seen that either, but she knows him well and they get along)
Hook: No music, drama, art or sports. Lots of research and teaching experience. Huge academic risk-taker -- would take a B in a challenging class any day over an easy A. Finalist for couple of very big national awards.
Intended major: math, but also very interested in philosophy, history and poli sci</p>
<p>Location: planet earth
High School Type: public, selective program
Ethnicity: white
Gender: male
Applied for Financial Aid: yes</p>
<p>Extracurriculars: a couple of them, pursued very deeply since before middle school, that wound up developing into leadership positions and big national awards. Proud member of Yellow Pig Alumni Association. 17= <3.</p>
<p>"DS's Advice: Learn early what you love, and pursue it like mad. Find inspirational people. SCREW HYPS. Failing to pay attention in class because you're too busy exploring something you're interested in is wonderful. B's are worth it, if you learn something from it. (By the way, yellow pigs for the win?) Develop a network of people you know across the country and it'll pay extraordinary dividends. Visit every school you apply to, and don't apply to schools you haven't visited -- do massive research on every school, and don't apply anywhere unless you think that this college could conceivably convince you to go to them. (That applies to safeties, too, dammit.)"</p>
<p>Parental Advice: BELIEVE. GROW. DREAM. idad told me over a year ago that kids like DS have what he calls "imperfect resumes" and helped me believe that a school like UChicago would recognize and seek that. Thanks!</p>
<p>Gloat to DS's toxic 3rd grade teacher: TOLD YOU SO!!!</p>
