[]Essays: My "Why Chicago" essay was short and sweet, talked mostly about my desire for the intellectual and partly zany, quirky environment at UChicago. Second essay was a narrative on an ee cummings poem that I particularly enjoy. For the third essay I did topic of choice. I actually submitted an essay that my guidance counselor told me not to- it was about how every morning when the Pledge of Allegiance is said over the loadspeaker, I rebel by not putting my hand over my heart. It was a way of saying that I'm not afraid to go my own way, but I suppose it was a little risky with semi anti-patriotic sentiments (even though I didn't feel it was anti-America, just pro-free speech). Proof that guidance counselors can't always be trusted.

[li]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?:[/ul] I honestly didn't expect to get in, but I'm ecstatic. My advice? Take a chance. Since I wasn't expecting anything more than a rejection, I threw it all in. I really enjoyed my "risky" essay and didn't let my guidance counselor discourage me from submitting it. Also, let your genuine love for Chicago shine through in your essay, which can also be expressed in your original writing, viewpoints- I fully trust UChicago in identifying those who truly belong there. Even if you feel they wrongly denied you, everything will work out in the end. You'll enjoy your college years no matter where you end up- after all, its what you make of it.
[/li]

I hope that this thread has more or less proved the futility of "chance me" threads. All of you seem to be credentialed up the wazoo (more credentialed than I was, for sure), and you should know that your future, at whatever college you end up attending, is still largely determined by what you do to make it that way.

Of course, I congratulate everybody who was accepted, but I remind those who were deferred that the deferral is NOT a denial. The deferral is the "maybe." If Chicago is still one of your top schools, you should work on letting your admissions officer know that.

droseh-- way to go on not letting your gc tell you what to do.
