Spring tuition bills go out on 3/11.

How about this year’s tuition increase? Last yeat was 4.1% as I remember.

Thanks everyone - not that I’m anxious to pay that Spring bill, but don’t want to miss it either!

bit of a joke, lucky to get 1% interest on money in a bank nowadays

Had a very interesting “Conversation with President Zimmer” last evening at Four Seasons. This was my first participation in such an event held locally and I was very impressed by the level of attendance. It was nice to mingle with alumni and parents and exchange notes. There was one gentleman from the class of '47 and he got as much attention as Zimmer. I really liked how President Zimmer presented himself and the university. The clarity with which he explained the direction in which the university is headed and the changes that are taking place over there made me feel very good. There was nothing new in most of what he said but the information coming directly from the president of the university carries more weight than through its web site.

What impressed me the most was how he appealed to us to urge our reps to keep state universities humming. It was not a fund raising event but at the end of it I felt like donating whatever I have to the university.

Received the bill for the spring quarter yesterday, due on March 29.

Hi,

Any UChicago parents out there have suggestions on finding housing for an 8 week stint in the summer months? Son applying for an REU and would need to find housing for mid-July to mid-August. The REU does NOT come with housing (but I see the Physics one does, but he is not applying for that one) I’m not keen at all on him living in an area off campus because I worry :/

You can sublease a room for summer from one of the students living off-campus. That’s what my son did last year.

Finding housing for mid-July to mid-August should be really easy. Hyde Park leases tend to run July 1 to June 30, and about 80% of the apartments are empty or under-utilized during the summer. People are desperate to sublease, and will usually do it at some kind of discount. Now is a good time to set it up, by the way, since people are probably finalizing their arrangements for next year.

Exactly how to do it, I’m not certain. I think there’s an internet bulletin board for the UChicago Housing Office where people post available subleases. Or if your son has any friends at Chicago, they doubtless know people looking for sublessees.

As for living off campus, don’t worry about it so much. Hyde Park is very nice, especially if you stay reasonably close to campus, or to the chi-chi areas towards the lake. Generally, that’s going to be somewhat more expensive, but not all the way to “expensive”. Anywhere in Hyde Park between the Midway and not too far north of 54th should be fine.

(By the way, how do you fit “an 8 week stint” into “mid-July to mid-August”? Is this a Hermione Granger kind of REU? It will be easier to sublet for 8 weeks than four.)

Our CSS results indicated we don’t qualify for any financial aid (small business owner).

It’s crazy because we DO NOT have an extra $5,000 per month to pay for UChicago.

So, looking into private loans… any advice?

I just set up a Home Equity Line of credit with a bank, which allows me to borrow up to $120,000. The interest rate is very attractive, about 3.25%, not fixed, for 30 years. The interest paid to the bank is tax deductible. You could use the credit to pay tuition and fees. The premise is that your equity must have some net value, which is determined by its market value and existing mortgage.

UWHuskyDad, JHS, and Botanist,

Thank you for responding so quickly about the housing for REU situations

Our family got to spend Spring Break together and, of course, the son said he is handling it and is starting with checking with people he knows, first. I don’t think he knew about the MarketPlace, though. Once he does come up with something, we can make sure it falls within JHS suggestions on location…“between the Midway and not too far north of 54th should be fine” … and yeah, I meant mid-June to mid-Aug ;>

Arrgh, I know I should be happy he is doing this REU, but I would really rather he came home for the summer Now we’ll only get to see him for about a month before he goes back for next year and of course he has already mentioned maybe wanting to go back a little early to try and help with Orientation. Clearly, the kid is REALLY happy with choosing UChicago.

My daughter is attending UChicago this fall (Class of 2017).

Does any know when we need to get to the campus for the Incoming Student Orientation? We live in CA and need to arrange travel as early as possible.

Thanks!

Welcome to UChicago. This should help a bit:[Orientation | The College Orientation](http://orientation.uchicago.edu/)
We have a current first year who hopes to help with next years o-week. Feel free to ask any questions!

Hi jzwu2013 and welcome! My daughter is a first year and it drove me crazy how long it took to receive information from the U last summer! It helps to remember that the quarter doesn’t end until 6/15 so they are not thinking much about orienting next year’s first years until after that date. In 2012, classes started on Monday, 10/1 and first years moved in a full week before, on Sunday 9/23. Hope that helps.

From the U Chicago web-site: “Our Opening Days will be Sunday-Monday, September 22-23, 2013.” And that’s about all that’s been posted about move-in; momzhood, I too remember how long it took to get information about it. The first day of classes is Monday, September 30th. jzwu2013, do try to stay for the full two days; the U does a great job imo of starting things off beautifully for both student and parents.

jzwu2013: Welcome to UChicago! As Mutti2012 said, do try to stay for both days of orientation. The bagpipe procession on Monday is very moving and not to be missed.

My D is a current first year and also plans to help with O-week for the incoming class. This will be a very long summer so enjoy the time with your D before she leaves.

Jzwu2013
Like all the others, welcome.
Just want to warn you that hotel rooms for the o week are super tight and make reservation early. Ihouse is the most convenient, we stayed there, but it reminds me the old college dorm and it is. Lol
