@americannigerian we do not recalculate GPAs as part of our admissions process; we will consider your grades and GPA with the information your school gives us about its grading policies.

Does a parent with a graduate degree provide legacy status?

Hello UChicago,

I am writing on behalf of an international student. Is there any conflict between applying for merit scholarship and filling out ISFAA? I mean, if the student checks the box for merit scholarship in his common application, and then later uploads ISFAA with other documents, will that negatively effect the students chances of obtaining either of them?

Hi Grace! Is it true that UChicago superscores the ACT?

@latichever we consider students whose parents, grandparents or step-parents/step-grandparents have a degree (undergrad or grad) from UChicago to be legacy applicants; there is a space on your application where this affiliation may be noted.

@wiparent international students are also eligible for merit-based scholarships and applying for need-based aid with the ISFAA does not impact a student’s ability to also be considered for merit-based aid.

@sweis2013 yes we do superscore the ACT.

Hi Grace Writing to you from India. I hear UC admission team is going to be here later this month for a meet and greet. However they wont be doing 1 on 1 interviews. I was told though that when they in India last month, they did personal interviews with a few kids in Delhi. Is this bcos these kids were really of interest to them or is it that this time around the admissions team doesnt have the time to meet students 1 on 1?

@anulaks we were not able to fit time to do interviews one on one in to the travel schedule this year. It is still possible to have an in-person interview with alumni in many cities in India; if you are applying this year, you may indicate your interest in this in your UChicago Account.

The reason I was asking about 1 on 1 interviews with the admissions team is because I know someone who they interviewed just last month in Delhi. She has a perfect SAT score so I thought maybe that was the reason they interviewed her - because they had a special interest in her and kids with similarly strong applications.

Is there a University of Chicago sign somewhere on campus that’s a good spot for a photo?

@toots13, there isn’t a good permanent sign on campus for this, but there is one that the College Programming Office usually erects just under Hull Gate during orientation (if that’s the time you’re thinking of taking the photo).

@UChicago Thanks! Indeed, I want to embarrass my son fully at orientation. We are so excited and proud.

As well you should be! Protip: try to grab this photo sometime today before the bagpipe procession after convocation. You’ll be crying (happy tears) in the one you take after the procession is over.

@uchicago Do you only read an application once its complete? e.g. mid-term grades coming in

@ccvb2013 we make every effort to evaluate applications only once they are complete; in the case of materials that by necessity may arrive after our deadline (midterm grades or test scores that are finalized after the application deadline) we will wait to make a final decision until receiving these materials, but may begin to read and evaluate the application if otherwise complete (say, if the rest of your transcript or a different set of test scores is already submitted) before receiving new materials.

@uchicago Do you require two recommendations from teachers in academic subjects? If I am only able to submit one from an academic subject and one from IB art HL, would it hurt my chances if other parts of my application are strong?

Does Chicago have substance free housing? If so, does everyone who wants it get it?

@ccvb1013, we do require 2 rec letters from academic instructors; a teacher in an IB higher level art course would be perfectly fine since this course is taught in a rigorous fashion.

@green678, we do not have designated substance-free housing, although smoking (of cigarettes or beyond) is not allowed in any of our dorms.

@uchicago what abilities or qualities are you looking for in the uncommon essay? Why does u chicago require this when there is the common app essay? How important of a role does it play? Do you accept poetry?
