UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

Hi again,

For EA applicants, when does the application fee need to be received? I paid online through commonapp, but accidentally sent the wrong credit card information, so I cancelled the transaction through the credit card company. Right now, I can’t reaccess the payment form through commonapp because it says I have already submitted the fee. What can I do?

Also, do online entries for the portfolio need a teacher recommendation or a common app arts supplement? How would I turn that in? If I want to send something additional but not necessary an arts supplement, could I use that as well?

Is the portfolio also due by November 1st?

ahonorakon, if you feel that your composition represents an exceptional skill that you wish to continue developing in college, then go ahead and submit. However, also know that more supplements does not always = better application; if it is really important for you to submit, go ahead and do so, but it is not necessary.

Hello littlepenguin, on the payment, contact common app technical support to resolve this issue. Online portfolio entries do not need to be accompanied by an additional rec. You can upload supplements in portfolio up until Nov. 15th.

I’d like to send UChicago a copy of an abstract or some kind of information on a scientific study I’ve been conducting. However, I’m applying EA and the abstract will not be ready in time. Is there any way I will be able to send the abstract in later to add to my application? If not, do you suggest any other means of highlighting my research on my application?

Thanks for your help!

Hello,

My response to question 1 on UChicago’s supplement is much longer than “a paragraph or two”. Would it hurt me to send in something longer?

Thank you!

HowDoesOneApply, we will accept research abstracts up until Nov. 15th if uploaded in to the Portfolio section of your Chicago Account.

cakewalk, your question one response can be around 500 words, or one page single spaced/two pages double spaced; a little over is fine, but don’t write us a novel. Have someone look it over before submitting to make sure that all possible edits have been made; usually there is extra that can be cut out. Again, doesn’t have to be exactly 500 words, but try to be nice to your admissions counselor :)

Should I be concerned that my long essay is too short? It runs just under 300 words; it is one page double-spaced. I’m not done with my short responses yet, but I doubt they will wind up much shorter if they are shorter at all.

Don’t worry. Between 250-500 words is a good length. Under 250 would be too short.

I sent my SAT scores today but I did the rush report.

Does U. Chicago accept rush reports ? or should I send them again ?

is it bad that I rushed my SAT scores?

No need to rush. If you send them before Nov. 1 we will receive them in a timely fashion if they are submitted regularly.

but I heard some college don’t accept rush reports and I already sent my scores as rush report…
is it bad that i rushed my scores?

Hi Grace! Someone may have already asked about the deadline issue. But is it due on Nov. 1st 11:59 pm or Oct. 31st 11:59 pm? I just want to confirm… Thank you!

muhandojun, it is not bad, don’t worry.

oOBellaOo, the deadline is 11:59pm on the 1st.

If by last resort, I have to mail in the application fee (even though all my other application materials have been submitted online), would it be alright if the check is postmarked by November 1st?

Do you evaluate 1st quarter grades for EA? If so, how much weight do you give them (particularly if they conflict with previous trends in the grades). It’s not senior slack!! :stuck_out_tongue: It just usually takes me a little time to adjust, but I have it worked out in time for semester grades… should I wait and apply RD when my grades are a little higher?

littlepenguin, yes, so long as it is postmarked by the 1st, that is fine.

Hello KayBaday, we do not require first quarter grades; we will look at your first semester grades on your midyear report.

I have a question about fee waivers for the application. On the Uchicago website, it says

"*UChicago does not require an application fee if you believe it to be a financial hardship. Please provide a short note in the “additional information” section of the Common Application, or ask your guidance counselor for more information on fee waivers."

Does this mean I can have my fee waived with JUST an addendum on my “additional info” section of thecommonapp, or does the short note have to be combined with a separate waiver (College Board, NACAC, etc.)?
