Is it necessary to send first quarter grades? I ask because none of them are final grades, only 27-40%, but my counselor insists that she should send them.

Hello again Grace,

Sorry for so asking so many questions, I feel like I’m abusing your generosity. It’s just that this is such a great resource for getting questions answered directly! Thank you so so much for your time.

I was hoping for a straightforward answer about how UChicago admissions takes race into account. Specifically, is there a difference in admissions chances between a candidate who marks “White” and one who simply does not respond? I apologize if this question seems dumb or inappropriate. In my Government class today we discussed a Supreme Court case, Regents of the University of California v. Bakke, which dealt with race in the college admissions process; this got me thinking about the little box I checked on my Common App, “White.”

I know, of course, that many other factors are considered in your “holistic” admissions process, and I would guess that “White” and “no response” come out to be about equal in terms of admissions chances. However, I wonder if leaving this section blank might have given me slightly better chances. Everything is turned in for UChicago, but for future reference I’d be interested in hearing your answer.

Again, thank you thank you thank you!

Hi djz, it is not necessary to send them; we will ask for a midyear report of your final grades if you are accepted or deferred, so you can just wait until they are finalized to submit them at midyear.

Hi JAlfred, no worries; it’s important to me to make sure everyone’s questions get answered! Every year, we’re interested in building a diverse class of students. Many people travel directly to race when thinking about diversity, but to us, diversity means lots of things; family background, region of the country or the world, economic diversity, diversity of thought or opinion, and, yes, race or ethnicity as well. All of the students we choose to invite to UChicago are highly academically qualified for admission, excited about our environment, ready for the challenges of the liberal arts curriculum we offer, and bring something new to our applicant pool and eventual class—whether that’s an unparalleled interest in Art History, being the first in their family to go to college, or being from Spokane, WA (have to throw in a little of my own hometown pride every once in a while… ). Know that while your self-identified race is noted on your application, it is one of the many, many, many factors that contributes to the holistic process of crafting a diverse class.

Hello Grace,
I’m applying RD and I have a question about letters of recommendation. So in America high schoolers have guidance counselors who are supposed to write them a letter of recommendation in addition to two written by two of their teachers. But in my country we don’t have guidance counselors, and the only person who could possibly write me a counselor letter of recommendation is my school’s principal, who is new and who totally doesn’t know me … what should I do ?

Hey Grace,
How many people are usually accepted Early Action?

Hello!

I recently placed in the Top 10 of a regional competition.
Should I explain the award and attach it as a document in an email to UChicago’s admissions email, or upload it onto my UChicago account (in the area that allows additional documents)?

Hi! On my page, it says that my second Letter of Recommendation is missing, even though I sent it about two weeks ago and my other schools have received it. It says not to email about missing materials, but also that everything on the site has to be in tomorrow by five…what should I do?

Hello quizbowl, the number varies from year to year; sorry to not have a concrete answer.

Abrayo, please upload this in to the Portfolio section; no need to e-mail in a copy.

katbelle, no need to worry-- we’re still processing many documents, and your 2nd rec is likely still waiting to be processed; we’re doing a big processing haul this week and weekend, so please just hang tight. We can (and, in fact, do-- this happened to me!) admit students with one teacher recommendation; even if it doesn’t come through, your application is certainly not in jeopardy.

Okay phew good to hear. Thanks so much for the reply!

Hi Grace: how many people were accepted Early Action in the last few years then? :P

Sindarknave, we don’t keep that statistic separate from our general number of admitted students. If you look around on CC or other portions of the Internet I’m sure you’ll be able to find the rough estimates of other people who were interested in the same question.

(from Michelle Hernandez)

2015 is incorrect - it is 1600 out of 6960.

Hello! I just had two quick questions.

I received the notification that my parents’ income tax return form was unsigned, although I remember my parents signing the form. Is there multiple boxes you have to sign in the form? if so, should I send in the completely-signed version of the income tax return via fax again? I think I read on the blog that uchicago wants applicants to send in materials if it is shown as missing, but doesn’t say much about what to do if it is shown as unsigned.

Also, I checked off the box requesting an interview a while back, but haven’t heard from anyone. I’m getting anxious because most of my friends who applied has already gotten an interview almost a week ago. Should I contact the admissions office?

Thanks!

"2015 is incorrect - it is 1600 out of 6960. "

I checked around and could not find any reference for this although I have it on my own tracker from last year. So I could have mistyped it and Hernandez’s site is more accurate since she would have been asked to fix it by now.

Hello hellodarling, please contact the financial aid office for more instructions about your aid question. On interviews, as we had a record number of early applicants this year, we were unable to match all students who requested an interview with one; if you have not heard back yet, you were likely not matched with an interviewer. No worries, though; interviews are not a required portion of the application, and many many many of our students are admitted without an interview.

Hi Grace
I am an international student and the website now says that we should upload our ISFAA and tax forms. But before that, it said for us to email these materials instead, which I did. My account says my finaid forms werent processed/received yet. So do you suggest that I upload them to my Uchicago Account, or simply wait? Also it’s technically after the deadline now, but the website didn’t change its instructions until after the deadline, do you think they will still accept it if I upload these to my account?

Sorry for the exorbitant amount of questions, I’m just really panicky right now.

Sorry, I have one more problem. The website says to select “foreign aid app” from the dropdown menu on my UChicago account, but I don’t see a “foreign aid app,” should I just choose “Other?”

Hello Grace,
I have the same situation as AimingForIvy except my account shows “Awaiting” for Profile. However, I was told that I should not submit the Profile. Moreover, I already faxed the ISFAA along with my parents’ 2010 income tax documents. Will my financial aid application be completed with the “Awaiting” Profile? Thank you very much.
