UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

violinist,

I’ll save Grace some trouble by telling you that the admissions office won’t be able to share that information with you if you call.

Hi Grace,

The biggest thing in my decision right now is pretty much COA. Some time ago you mentioned that full tuition scholarships this year are going to mainly be distributed to kids from the Chicago area. Does this mean that kids outside of the Chicago area will see an increase in the number of smaller scholarships? Or will the amount of scholarships remain the same?

Thanks for your time!

Hi Grace,
I was lucky enough to get into the university in EA and I am definitely going to attend. The problem is our financial aid forms got turned in a little late and we probably won’t get an estimate for another few weeks. No matter what the financial aid is like I will still attend (although of course we could definitely use some assistance), so if I made my deposit and committed would that affect my financial aid? I want to get around to choosing housing  I just don’t want to ruin my chances of getting financial aid! Thanks in advance Grace, it is great that you are here to help us out!

Sorry for delayed responses here-- things pile up on CC even just over one day of traveling!

All, you can now find our acceptance rate for EA (17.8%) on the Choice Blog at the New York Times. [Early Line on Early Admissions - NYTimes.com](Early Line on Early Admissions - The New York Times)

YesMan, your application is evaluated on its own merits; we do not have “quotas” for the number of students we can (or must) accept from any particular school.

jake1313, I am not a financial aid officer and cannot speak to how effective an appeal would be, but the aid office does consider appeals. Remember, too, that your current aid package is only an estimate. You can get in touch with them at college-aid@uchicago.edu .

shootingsilver, excellent question! We have a very excellent Outdoor Adventure Club, their website (sadly not very informative) is here: [Outdoor Adventure Club](http://oac.uchicago.edu/) The group goes on camping trips in the area (a popular student camping destination is the Indiana Dunes) and does other activities that its members wish to explore. Students can also borrow equipment from the club to use if they are not members.

nondairycreamer, we begin reviewing RD applications when the individual applications are complete; our RD deadline is January 3, and the vast majority of RD applications are not complete until after that deadline. Finally, a reading holiday for us! :)

shootastar, we want to know that students participate in something outside of school-- but it’s completely up to you what that happens to be. Some students have leadership experience, and that’s fine-- but many students don’t (and we’re fine with that, too, as no club would function if it only had presidents!). Student activities are varied, and range from research to volunteering to music to sports to paid work or caring for family members, all of which are important ventures in our eyes.

santabarbie18, deferral is not a guarantee of acceptance, nor of being denied; we traditionally take about 10% of our deferred applicants, but the students we accept from the pool come from varied backgrounds, so, while we certainly encourage you to keep looking at other schools, you shouldn’t cross us off your list just yet.

violinist233, we do not share the reasons for particular admissions decisions (whether a student is accepted, denied, or deferred).

hk0000, I think you may have been mistaken about my discussion of merit scholarships; we have some merit scholarships (the Chicago Public Schools Scholarship, the Chicago Police and Fire Scholarship) that are specifically endowed for students from Chicago, but our other merit scholarships are general and all students are considered. Please feel free to learn more about financial aid and merit scholarships here: https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/costs/merit.shtml</a></p>

wood2012, accepting your offer of admission will not affect your aid decision in any way (our aid office operates separately from our admissions office, so chances are the aid office will not even know that you’ve decided to attend), so feel free to send in the deposit whenever you’d like to. Congratulations and welcome to the class of 2016!

grace - Are you acknowledging NYTIIMES number as accurate? What are the numbers for deferred and rejected?

terxaspg, yes, we did release those numbers to the NYTimes. To my knowledge (stats are not my area of expertise) we have not released our number of deferred/denied students. I know many of you were hoping for those, but, I’m sorry-- not my fault! I will let you know if we release them.

Hi Grace,

Could you answer my question on alumni interviews please? Is it too late for me to get an interview now? I applied for EA and got deferred.

Thank you very much!

hi grace,

do admitted students get scarves this year?

simp1eton, sorry, got lost in the shuffle. Deferred students who have not had an alumni or on campus interview are eligible to interview. You may express interest in an interview through your Chicago account (if this option is not already active it will be in the coming days, our tech team was working on making this option available in the accounts).

empirical, what are these “scarves” you speak of? :)

Hi Grace.
I was deferred and I’m wondering if I could submit a revised version of one of my supplemental essays. If so, should I upload it to my UChicago account or email it to my regional counsellor? Thank you!

quatchi, we would prefer that you upload any updates you have in to your Chicago Account. A revised essay is fine.

Hi Grace,

Thank you very much for answering my question!

I have sent a note to my regional counselor affirming that UChicago is my first choice. I feel uncomfortable sitting and waiting for the inevitable, especially when I got deferred once, so I have prepared more additional materials for UChicago. But now I wonder if I should upload them. Will you get annoyed if I upload too many materials? I’m telling myself not to be panicky, but I want to do whatever I can to bolster my application.

Thank you for answering our questions even during the holiday season! Hope you have fun =D

Hi. So I was deferred, and while I read the instructions on the Uchicago blog post, I have a couple of questions:

1) When it says “write to your regional admissions officer to reaffirm your interest in the school”, I am unsure how many times it is recommended that you write. Should you write only once, and if so, is it better to email your regional adcom immediately, or wait until January/February when they’re making decisions? And if it isn’t only once, what is the optimal number of times to write to demonstrate maximum interest in the school without becoming ridiculously annoying?

2) Could you give me examples of what “supplemental materials” might include (and yes, I understand that’s optional and that uploading superfluous information won’t help my application)? The main thing I was thinking of that might help me is an additional letter of recommendation, but I don’t know how I’d go about sending that since I obviously couldn’t upload it to my account.

Thanks for your help!(:

Hi Grace,

I had two more brief questions.

I thought I had seen someone ask this, but I couldn’t find the question/answer. How should the email to your regional admissions officer about why UChicago remains your top choice be different from the actual Why UChicago essay? I want to write it in a way that doesn’t seem like I’m just repeating what I wrote for the actual essay.

I have seen others on this thread who were deferred say that they’re “revising” some of their essays. To what extent can an essay be revised? I hope it doesn’t mean that you can totally rewrite one and turn it in again.

Thanks again!

Unfortunately UChicago is delaying the release of deferred/rejected applicant numbers because the deferred numbers are most likely astronomically high. Most deferred applicants (particularly ones without hooks) likely have no chance of being admitted. No longer is it true that an applicant is deferred only if he/she has a strong chance of admission. It is really unacceptable to enable a situation where the students read these threads and somehow think they have a chance. Not sure why they do this, maybe to encourage more early applicants. UChicago needs to follow the practice of schools like Northwestern, which admits or rejects early applicants. Shame on UChicago. Deferred students, MOVE ON! There are MANY excellent schools who would love to have you, not string you along with false hope.

Hi Grace,
I was admitted EA but I wasn’t aware that we had to submit our financial aid information by November 1st. I read somewhere that I can submit it now and just receive the details regarding my financial package later on–is this true?

Thanks!

Hi Grace,
I am an International Applicant and I have a question concerning ISFAA form for student applying for financial aid. I find in the website: ‘Please scan your completed ISFAA and supporting documents and submit them online through your UChicago Account.’ So when will I receive instruction to create my UChi account after I submit my CommonApp?
Thank you for your help, and Merry Christmas everybody!

Hi Grace

Sorry for annoying you again.

I will graduate from high school in December 2011 and take board exams in January. Do I need to submit a Mid-year report or can I send a Final Report when board results become available in late March?

Thank you!

Hey all, quick note-- I am on vacation with my family and will return to responding to your questions (including the waiting ones above) on the 27th of December. Happy holidays!
