Hey uchicago,
If you were waitlisted, when will waitlisted student get the earliest notification of whether they have been admitted or denied? Could that notification come possibly before May 1?

Thanks

Heya Grace!

I’m an ea admit for the class of 2017, and I was wondering how hard it is to get into the Law Letters and Society major? and how rigorous is the application process?
I also am a national merit finalist, but have received no merit aid, and was wondering if there were provisions for merit finalist aid. Thanks for all you do!

I was accepted EA to UChicago. At that time I was planning on majoring in physics, but since then engineering has become more interesting to me. I found that the UChicago had created the Institute of Molecular Engineering, which sounded like the perfect combination of my interests. I don’t see a molecular engineering major; will one be available soon? Can you even take classes in this or is the program not far enough along to do that?

Bob,

This is a weird way to get off the wait list :D

I see you made an account for purpose of discouraging people from choosing Chicago and have already made this post in several threads and forums.

I don’t think it will work, but good luck with that.

piratescould and learninglover - any luck with financial aid?

utbeatsou, it is possible that some waitlisted students could hear back about their status before May 1, but it seems likely that we will not be able to make most considerations until after May 1.

hi netadeta, great questions about that major! You can browse the information about the program here, [Law, Letters, and Society - University of Chicago Catalog](Law, Letters, and Society < University of Chicago Catalog), but it may be helpful to you to speak with a current student in the program, and I know we have one working in our office-- email psac@uchicago.edu and ask to speak to Lauren K-J, she’ll be able to give you a view from inside the program (she is a current 3rd year).

percheno, great question. The program is still building a faculty, but does have professors who have been appointed to the division who teach courses and conduct research. They expect to offer an undergraduate concentration in the subject within the next few years, likely before you would graduate if you are entering in the Class of 2017. The institute’s director, Prof. Matt Tirrell, welcomes questions from students; feel free to email him if you have further questions about course options or the eventual concentration. His email address is available under “contacts” on the IME website: [About | Institute for Molecular Engineering](http://molecularengineering.uchicago.edu/about/)

Is a low AP test score (such as 1 or 2) grounds for being rescinded?

classycolleges, no, rescinding admission is reserved for very serious circumstances and although we would hope that you could receive a passing mark on the AP exam, receiving a low score on AP is not one of them (we’re talking circumstances like failing multiple courses, academic dishonesty or plagiarism, becoming a felon, etc).

Additionally, we do not require you to take AP tests in all subjects you have studied at the AP level, and would not be able to grant you advanced standing or credit for a score of 1 or 2-- so you may wish to discuss the option with your school counselor or teacher of not taking the test if you feel that you will not pass the test (or ways in which you could more effectively study if you are committed to taking it).

My daughter was admitted early action, received financial aid package.
EFC seems high, is there merit aid still being awarded and any timetable for this?

Also, is there an admitted student family event planned?

frankfort,
You should have received an email about overnight visits in April. One is going on today and tomorrow. Here’s the link we received a few weeks ago.

https://prospects.uchicago.edu/engage/engage/april_overnights.shtml

Hi UChicago,

How common is it for first-years to have a RA position at the Booth school of business? And how would one go about doing that? Is it just basically contacting a professor via email and saying that you are interested? And is there a place/website where you can see the research a professor is currently doing?

Sorry for all the questions – research in economics/business is something that I’m really interested in, so I just wanted to get a “head start” on finding the position that most interests me.

Thanks!

t5frankfort, I would be in touch directly with your student’s regional admissions counselor if you still have concerns. You will be able to learn more about visiting programs at the link provided above by zombiesheep.

jamesbond, it is certainly possible for first-year students to find research assistantships at Booth and in other research positions on campus. It would not be necessary to take action on this until you get to campus; most student jobs and research openings are posted online at studentemployment.uchicago.edu (you will need your CNet ID, which you’ll receive later this summer, to log in there, and most jobs are posted shortly before the beginning of the fall term). You are also welcome to contact professors whose work you find interesting although, again, this is not necessarily advised to do before the fall; while there is no general website where you may find all research for every division, faculty profiles are posted on many departmental websites, so search around on the websites of different divisions to get some ideas of what you may be interested in!

Hey uchicago,
Is it turning out that uchicago will be able to admit students from their waiting list? And if so, when will be the earliest that uchicago will send notifications to their students?

Thanks

Hi utbeatsou, as I noted before, it is possible that some waitlisted students could hear back about their status before May 1, but it still seems likely that we will not be able to make most considerations until after May 1. We will communicate with students directly regarding their waitlist status when more information is available.

Hi Grace,

My D does not qualify for any need-based financial aid from UChicago. She got 2K merit-based scholarship though.

Her status has changed a bit since she was rewarded the scholarship. She is a good athlete at high school and has contacted with UChicago coach regarding her interest in the collegiate sports. It looks like she could be a student-athlete and playing for UChicago.

Is it possible that her merit-based scholarship will be re-evaluated based on the update?

Thank you!

Did this guy get accepted from the waiting list for this admission year?

eddi, as a member of NCAA Division-III, we are not able to award merit-based scholarship on the basis of athletic ability or performance on a team.

Can you offer some suggestions and/or contact info/links for finding housing for a grad student starting this coming fall?

Thanks.

Marketplace is by far the best place to search for housing opportunities specifically in Hyde Park; you may also consider using PadMapper or similar services, but Marketplace is basically a UChicago-only version of Craigslist, and you’ll be able to find apartments as well as roommate opportunities.

Hi, if we are admitted off waitlist, does that mean we will have basically lowest priority for housing? Since housing is a ‘first come first serve’ process
